Come on now. The bench press can definitely help anyone build a bigger chest. He should've told how to better isolate the chest when performing your sets. For example, a wider grip is definitely going to help isolate the chest as opposed to a more narrow grip that would work the triceps.

I think its a bad title for the ideas that elliot expresses in the video. you can but its stupid... bench isn't that good for bodybuilding and even if you bench in way that fucks up your shoulders to try and isolate your chest its still not good for building mass in the chest... triceps size yes... chest size no.... strength yes....

The wider you go, the more risk you run of certainly involving your shoulders MORE than your chest, and now you are heading straight to a sure injury, now or later. I would just incorporate bench press with flies, but even a better idea is dips and flies.

Blair Vandergaag elliott is a serious lifter, a true athlete not like those 2 clowns, i would recommend people to stop taking those twins serious in terms of fitness advice. yo elliott, athlean-x, ct fletcher, kali muscle, six pack shortcuts etc. and all of these are tons better than those fuckin twins

This is literally the only place I've ever seen that says the Bench Press doesn't help build a bigger chest. Every other bodybuilding/fitness website on the planet says that the Bench Press is vital to building a bigger chest. Perhaps his form is bad, or perhaps he's not getting the right nutrition for his diet, or maybe his chest *is* getting bigger but he's not seeing a lot of the results just yet. Either way, very misleading information to say that the Bench Press doesn't build chest muscles. Chest Flies are great exercises as well, but the Bench is Omni-important to building a good chest.

First of all you cannot make serious examples of bodybuilders using tons of steroids for obvious reasons. Second if u keep your elbows tucked there will be MORE triceps and front delt than chest, thats why its called powerlifting style. Flare your elbows and lift from your neck is gives most in EMG-tests. I never use bench since Im all into building instead of chasing heavy weights and yes my chest is better now when I tossed out the bench for dumbells.

Skedaren You ARE aware that not every single bodybuilder uses Steroids and that there's still a ton of work put into a bodybuilder even if they do juice, right? I mean, Steroids don't just instantly beef your muscles up. You can't just inject yourself with the stuff and wake up jacked, there's still a lot of exercising to do. And if you keep your elbows tucked and your hands closer together it becomes more of a tricep workout, but if you keep your hands placed farther apart than your shoulders it becomes a chest workout. You don't know a lot about proper lifting form do you?

Man chest is the easiest shit to build. The reason people don't build a nice chest is because they have no finesse. You push with your chest (mind-muscle) connection and hit your full ROM ( keyword "your"..depending on genetics you may be telling the truth that you can't go bar to chest)...and then yes....after that, flies are a must to finally blast the chest for good. At least two variations to include flies for upper chest. Wait a week for it to grow and heal and do it all over again. People care to much about their ego...lower the weight and focus on the chest doing the work if you want to build your chest. How much you can bench is not the priority if you are a bodybuilder.

I've heard it's not always best to go chest deep, that you want your elbows at a 90 degree angle, that you put your shoulders at an awkward position possible hurting you by tearing your rotator cuff? What do you think?

Kyle Sexton You do put more stress on the rotator cuff by doing a full ROM. But if you control the weight and focus on good form then this shouldn't be a prob. Top powerlifters and bodybuilders do a full ROM. Most young guys use to much weight to try to impress those around them. I see this time and time again. I would say at least 90% of guys.

Also the way to involve the chest more and shoulders less is by maintaining a 45 deg. angle between the chest and arm during the bench press. I see lots of guys who bench with their arms perpendicular to their bodies, which is a quick way to hurt the shoulder,

Damnationization Weight has nothing to with it unless your form falls to shit. At that point yes you should bring down the weights. What you just said about top lifters well the form is perfect so start with good form and as the weights climb there should be no problem.

Jurgen Heinrich Not as much as it would if you had done 12 or so with lots of time under tension. 3 reps at around 85% intensity tends to mainly be used around building strength as opposed to size. You'll get strong legs, but they won't grow to any notable degree.

im sorry, but i have to respectfully disagree. although the bench press is a compound movement, its a great way to stimulate your chest if done right. People dont realize how much your mind plays a part in each exercise. so when you do each rep its important to think about your chest muscles and try to mentally zero in on your pecs, almost canceling out the other muscles with your head (if that makes sense). you can even widen your grip as well to put more of the focus on to your chest. Isolation exercises like flys help shape your muscle but is not the best thing to do to trigger growth because you want the heavy weight. Lastly and probably the most important part is your nutrition. THE ONLY WAY TO GET BIGGER IS TO EAT MORE. You can work out till you turn blue in the face, but if your not taking in enough calories to make your body grow nothing else will matter. You gotta eat big to get big, thats what the majority of people just cant get through their heads.

Totally agree. I was about to comment, but I couldn't have said it any better. I workout with guys all the time who don't seem to grasp the idea that you can mentally call upon the muscles you want to use in a particular exercise. If you are just going through the motions, then yes I agree with this video, but you can do a bench press without using triceps shoulders etc much at all.. I like to think as if my arms are dead and I only have my chest muscles to push the weight up... works for me.

You're saying you shouldn't be doing isolation exercises, because compound exercises allow you to lift more weight, thus increasing stress on the muscle. On the other hand, how would you successfully pull off an arm workout without isolation exercises? My point is that the bulk of your workout routine should be compound exercises, but isolation exercises still have a well-deserved place in the routine of any bodybuilder.

***** He probably does fly's wrong and hasn't seen proper gains on them, most of the younger lifters at my gym grab like 70lb dumbbells for fly's when they should really be using 20's. To make it worse they end up mainly using their tricep to complete the motion barely working the chest at all. Certainly an exercise that form really counts on. Cable Crossover Fly's are the freaking bomb and give my chest a great workout.

When I was doing knee push ups my triceps got huge. Playing basketball I even got comments about it. I've been benching for about 6 months and my chest has gotten much bigger. My chest is sore after bench. Perhaps it doesn't work for some people but bench has definitely helped my chest. I think dumbbell flys are probably the best chest exercise for chest growth.

He makes a solid point. It's not that bench press doesn't work your chest, but it takes a while before it does. A perfect example of this would be the variation of push ups. If you do wide/plyo push ups, you will build more chest muscle. Whereas the closer you place your hands, you will feel more tension on the triceps and shoulders. Depending on the grip really is how you build a bigger chest. I would suggest doing pushups instead of using a bench press to really develop a nice chest. I could be wrong, but for about 8 months without a bench press, it seems to be working.

dalton graham most people (myself included) don't bench 100% properly, in which case flies are a better movement. bench is great if you know how to bench. most people don't. flies are also better for purely hitting parts of the chest, bench is front delts, chest, triceps, etc.

Flys is where the cables win over free weights because the tension is constant. When you bring the dumbbells up together at the top of the fly movement you are resting - you're simple letting your joints hold the weight up above your chest. When you come to the "top" of the contraction with cables, the cables are still pulling your hands apart and providing that same amount of resistance as in the first part of the lift. HUGE DIFFERENCE! Flys with cables 4 LIFE SON! WOOO!!!

Good advise for people who don´t have access to cables: I get the same with weights. I do what Vic Costa would call a 80% rep, to keep constant pressure on my chest. It has literally blown out the last 2-3 months, and I haven´t changed anything in my chest workout other than that.

I like to use ring flies but hang the straps above arms width apart so you must squeeze to bring the hands together and that provides a lot of tension, plus body is moving through space, apparently that's better like pull ups vs lat pull down.

1BassJohn Steroids are trendy now a days. When I was a personal trainer most of the younger guys around the range of 20 and 30 would ask me if I had the hook up ped's. I've been training since I was 12 years old. I guess now a days there is a lot of pressure to fit in and look a certain way. I don't even know what a steroid looks like...lol...damn shame!!

Tested , working 100 % .On bench press I was working with 135 -145 kg ,6 reps per set, and I was in good shape , but my chest were small compared to arms and shoulders . I have been training for years and I could't make big chest until I started to pay attention on fiys. In 4 months after I started to doing flys regularly I made chest to look proportionate .

Originally I was going to post something along the lines of "If you think bench press doesn't make your chest bigger, stop lifting now" But when he started to go on about how a bench press burns out your triceps before it hits your chest, got me thinking. I actually DO notice that in a bench press i usually feel about 70% of the fatigue in my arms, NOT my chest, and when I do a chest workout I usually feel the burn more in flies and pullover, and push-ups and whatnot. Glad I didn't post before I watched the whole video! Maybe this guy has a point.

Build big mass in your chest like this: Bench (flat, decline, or incline), weighted dips, crossovers. Very basic and effective when put into a solid program.

if you cant build a big chest doing a barbell bench then just switch to dumbell. It is much better for building your chest anyway and lets you target the chest more.

havve to disagree dumbell presses and cable isolations got my chest bigger. All bench press did was help give it some shape. but hes right it does work your shoulders more than your trics than your chest. Bench always works your chest last while doing reps. ***** Not really, I feel with dumbbell it's isolating my muscles more. With bench press I keep my elbows tucked so there's more pressure on my triceps compared to my shoulders (power lifting style). By doing it that method I feel my strength is improving for pressing movements. If you're benching with the barbell and you have one arm lower than the other whilst your pressing then it means your form is fucked up or you have shoulder injury..

there are 4-5 different ways u can use dumbells though u can tuck ur elbows as well with dumbells if your doing it one of the other ways, You can look up differnt ways of dumbell pressing trust me its waay better. People just know it more for the regular way. Fly is also one of the popular ones that helps alot. People love em

I think the hodgetwins say flys are not a good exercise, but probably because it doesnt work for them as well as bench press does. In my opinion, all exercises are somewhat good, but you need to find those that work best for you.

I agree with you. Some exercises work great for some people while those same exercises don't work for other people. Larry Scott, the original Mr. Olympia from 1965-66 had amazing biceps. His favorite biceps exercise was the preacher curl. Because of Larry Scott's success, a young Arnold Schwarzenegger tried preacher curls and realized that it didn't do anything for him. Everyone is different and our reaction to certain exercises vary.

The title is a bit misleading but he clarifies in the video when he says the bench press isn't "necessarily" a chest exercise "per say". But it can be. He then redirects the answer to the question towards specific isolation movements for the guy who's chest isn't getting bigger from doing the press movements. I think he was trying to tackle the specific problem our friend had which was the fact his bench presses were going up but his chest wasn't growing. Probably primarily due to his triceps and/or front delts getting stronger.

This makes sense. On my chest days I do 8 sets if flat bench press, 6 sets of incline dumbell press and my chest never gets pumped. Usually my tri ceps give out before my chest ever feels a good pump. I honestly believe push ups are the best exercise to do for chest. I started doing push ups my first 3 years of working out seriously and built an amazing chest. I used to do 1500 pushups every workout. I also do dumbell flys and cable flys and many other chest exercises and push ups seem to give me the biggest and most intense pump

I KNOW it does develop pectoral muscles. He didn't mention chin dips...hmmm?? I just hate no it alls who don't know it all. He's one of those dudes who give me advice at the gym then I nod and stare at him while I do 30 pull ups.

Firstly, if you get so aggravated by the noise of the truck *try NOT making videos when the truck is scheduled to be working outside your door!* Secondly, flyes do *not* build mass...they are an isolation exercise which predominantly means they *sculpt* the muscle i.e. add shape...best exercise to add mass to the chest is *decline bench press* as it removes a lot of the stress off the shoulders and puts more labour on the thicker inner chest strands...also, keep hand width at a natural spacing, around 18 inches apart as if they were directly besides your nipples as this ensures the motion of your arms puts the majority of the stress onto your chest and not your triceps...superset this with pec dec and you'll feel an unreal pump on the insides of the muscle just expanding all the fibres...do flyes at the end of the workout to stretch out the fibres and put stress on the areas of the muscle that more than likely get missed by the bench press like the inner chest area and around the clavicular tendons and where the muscle joins underneath the biceps

I will disagree with ou on this , not completely but the main part. Yes triceps gets around 30% of workout while bench pressing but if you lift proper your chest gets the most. I have done nothing but bench press for my chest when I first started working out and my chest exploded those first two years. After that I changed the gym and started doing other chest exercises .

Not sure exactly what you heard, but yes, exercises such as bench press and squats do build more muscle in general. Why, well they incorporate more than one muscle group for the exercise. Bench press requires triceps, shoulders, chest, and even back and abs as stabilizers if you keep proper form. With all these muscles working, they all get stronger at the same time they will all grow (with the right nutrition). Also, since there is more than one muscle group being used in the exercise, you will typically be able to use a lot of more weight than an isolation exercise alone, which means you should be able to increase the amount of weight you use in shorter time, which of course helps you muscles grow to the next level. But that is not what Elliot was answering, he was answering why this guy's chest specifically wasn't growing. Keep in mind, this was some guys asking Elliot something quick, I am sure his chest was growing, just must have been something like it's not growing as fast as his triceps are, or he looks disproportionate with big arms and little chest, maybe his genetics were not in his favor, or maybe this guys actually had a big chest to the rest of us, but he himself wasn't happy with the aesthetics of his chest. Either way, Elliot isn't wrong with his response; isolation exercises are probably better for building more mass on a particular group of muscles than compound exercises would for that same group of muscle. Why? 1) You reduce the amount of help from these extra muscle groups 2)You get a different and typically wider range of motion that can tap into neglected muscle fibers 3) You create 'muscle confusion' (I do not want to explain that theory, but if you believe in it, it's there). If that still doesn't make sense, here's an example: Would dead-lifts or crunches be better for building abs? For the most part, crunches are better. There are factors that COULD make the dead-lift better: maybe you dead-lift 600 lbs which would actually require a lot of work from your abs since the sheer weight stimulates your abs more than crunches would. But that's advance level weight training, and you should be able to modify your crunches/other ab-isolating exercises at that level to the point you get more out of them than a dead-left. As you can tell, there is a lot that goes into bodybuilding, nothing is ever straightforward. Truth be told, the differences between isolation and compound exercises won't mean squat shit if you don't work out properly. This means good form, contracting your muscles as much as you can, and a whole bunch of other stuff but I'm tired of typing dude/woman. If you are confused by what I and all these other fitness channels are saying, don't worry about it, that is all advance and complicated shit. Just stick with the bare basic for getting stronger and growing bigger, which is to increase the weight of your exercises over time and provide your muscles with the right nutrition for them to recover. Everyone has a different physiology and biology going on, no two people are the exact same. For example some people have more fast-twitch muscles that grow with explosive exercises, while other people have slow-twitch muscle fibers which grow with endurance exercises. And if you are really into fitness, you will learn all those fancy things by yourself. With time, you will learn which tricks are best for you through trial and error. The important part is to do, and to learn, so quit reading this long ass post and start exercising!

Incline Dumbbell Press: Warm up-->12-8-10-10-12-12, heavy-med Isopress/dumbbell decline: (set the seat high on the isopress to give a decline feel) 10-12-12,med-light Incline dumbbell fly 12-12-12, med-light Cables flies 12-12-12. med-light *Most important note*: Technique** keep your muscles contracted, don't rest at the top of your presses. If your having trouble with this, use less weight. Technique will help you grow more/faster than trying to lift bigger weight with poor technique. 4 points of contact head, shoulders, butt and feet then puff the chest will do the rest. *Squeeze the hell out of your upper chest* lower chest grows easy for me, so I favor incline heavy chest days, *im not trying to build man boobs* other notes: *You can't grow if you not eating correctly* *alternate heavy week/light week* example heavy day reps=12-8-8-10-10 heavy-med, 8-10-10 heavy-med, 10-10-10 med, 10-10-10 med. *separate arms from chest and back days* Example: Doing heavy presses tires the triceps and prevents a strong contraction during isolation lifts (triceps extensions, skull crushers etc.) which in turn will reduce growth

Hey Elliott, I've got a question for you. I know that it is best to have close muscle proportion in both strength and size, but would it be better to have a stronger back or a stronger chest?

If you're going to build a great big chest with flyes you better have some boulder shoulders with strong tendons, etc to go with it because I tried that. The Scooby guy teaches the same thing you just said and I started doing flyes as my primary chest builder and then finished off with presses. Made a lot of sense to me. Only thing is the chest gets so strong it puts A LOT of strain on the shoulders and mine just couldn't keep up. I found myself bring my arms in more and more and you guessed it, just went back to presses.

you need to do hypertrophy training. (8-10 reps and keep the tension on the muscle). use bench presses or dumbbells for a better range of motion
