Take a close look at the popular Benchmade Bugout pocket knife, and the best way to sharpen it.
Learn a blade positioning technique that can be used to get a slight angle gain at the tip, which will help keep the bevel the same width along the full length of the blade.

I love the sound of the 1000 grit stone and the tapes. So smooth.

Just received my 6000 grit polish tapes and a couple other accessories, and man, do they put a mirror shine on the edge! For $25 I should have ordered the small blade attachment too. That will be next. The production value is sky rocketing with every new video! Keep them coming.

I use the edge pro as well. If you take blue painters tape and tape the blade then cut it at the blades edge, remove the tape and shift it up about 1/2" it will protect the finish on the blade. Just a pro tip from someone that sharpens about 10 or so knives a week.

Keep the videos coming. It would be great to see, if you haven't already done so, a video on the top 10 sharpening mistakes that people make and how to correct them. In other words, what is preventing people from achieving great results on their Edge Pro. Thanks Cody. The video quality is improving day by day.

If you need to take the thumb stud off of the blade to make sharpening easier, you can position the blade how you want it, mark the tape on the blade (or the blade itself) with a touch of sharpie over the edges of the table, then just loop the mark over to the other side of the blade so it's consistent across both sides. I use a little rubbing alcohol and q-tips to clean the blade off afterwards, and then put a bit of mineral oil on it (wiping off the excess) for some food-safe protection.

Cody, I own the Professional model. I noticed you did the “curled paper” test to demonstrate the sharpness of the knife. However, you are doing it incorrectly. You should be cutting into the tube on the curved surface. Hold the tube horizontally and cut straight down. Basically, cut the tube in half so you have two tubes. Keep up the videos. Love them and the product!

Bryan, thanks for clearing that up ... I had a request for that cut test but I really wasn't sure if I understood correctly. I'm pretty sure I got it after your explanation.

Lapping tape will last longer if you don’t push towards the edge pull towards you instead

Cody, thanks for these videos. I have watched some videos of the apostle and another fellow, but you check all the boxes for me. I ordered my edge pro apex this morning. Can’t wait to use it…guess I’ll need to get a knife next…haha 😂. Actually, I sharpen everything free hand with a DMT diamond stone. Mine are what I would call razor sharp…but not consistent down the entire blade.

You mentioned how to avoid the dreaded wide bevel that happens when you get to the tip. Can you do a video that addresses this problem. I have a sebenza that I had to buy a new blade because the wide bevel at tip drove me nuts. This problem happens quite frequently on knives that have a thick tip.
@brianhilligoss
@brianhilligoss 4 года назад
charles hodgdon it’s the way you sharpen. You need to have the tip behind the sharpening table so you get some angle gain. You will have to adjust how far back the tip is depending on the thickness.

May I ask how long it took to sharpen that Benchmade Bugout?

Nice video! I usually just use the 220 and 600 grit stones before I strop now, I really like the edge it gives for my pocket knifes. Would love to try out your new diamond stones in the future, though :)

The matrix stones are nice, they leave a nice edge on high carbide steels like s110v or rex 45 but they work on just about anything else too.

Do you just keep going over the wide bevel at the tip until it removes the sharpie? I have this problem on every knife I've tried sharpening with my edge pro so far and it drives me insane haha

Nice one! Just a question. I have the small knife adaptor but is scratching the spine of my knives. Can I use the with guard of the normal one? Or can I put some tape on the spine or on the metal guide? Thanks :)
@EdgePro
@EdgePro 4 года назад
Davide, Putting some tape along the spine of the knife, or the metal plate (knife guide) is probably the best solution. Next time you place an order I could make you a small guide clip - it will probably work fine on some knives, but on a lot of small knives the guide clip will just get in the way. -Cody

I have to re edge my benchmade becuz the factory angle is at like 35 degrees whereas my lanskey sharpener only goes to 30 degrees. I wonder why benchmade has such a high angle on the griptilian?
@EdgePro

Sadly, most knife companies don't put nearly as much love or attention to detail in the sharpening of their knives as they do other details.

why do you feel the need to repeatedly distract the viewer with computerized noise and drum beats through the whole video? I had to keep hitting the fucking mute button just to stay focused on the demo. is there some reason why you don't want the viewer to pay attention to the knife sharpening demo?

Annnnd ruined. S30v and similar steels work better and last longer with toothy edges. Polishing is a waste of time.
@EdgePro
@EdgePro 5 лет назад
CPT, I appreciate your insight but to describe it as "ruined" is a bit harsh. There are many people who would agree with your preference for a toothy edge. As well as many would disagree. I think both edges have their time and place. Ultimately I would encourage people to finish with whatever stone they prefer, that's why I gave you a close up visual of the various finishes.
