The Benchmade Bushcrafter 162 came to me from Knife Hog for review, and I can't lie - I was pumped. I have a handful of Benchmade knives and I have been very impressed with them. I wanted to see if all I had heard about the Bushcrafter was true. A nice S30V blade with a 90-degree spine for using a fire steel, G10 handles, a leather sheath with a spot for a ferro rod, and overall a comfortable knife. I would definitely recommend this knife for anyone wanting to invest in a nice camping, bushcraft, or wilderness survival knife.

I have been using fixed blade knives since 1972. The Benchmade 162 is the most comfortable handle I ever experienced. The blade geometry and length are perfect for the wilderness or for a camping-beach trip. It is built like a rock, yet able to perform across the spectrum of applications. A must have knife if you bushcraft, camp, survival applications, or just want a fixed blade EDC.

best fixed blade on the planet. too bad the leather sheath sucks - my knife would fall out from merely walking around because the snap around the handle is so loose. invested in a custom made sheath from Grommets leathercraft which is about 100x sturdier, so now it doesn't fall off my hip or pack randomly in the field

This is a knife that excels in any bushcraft and survival task, and under any weather condition. I appreciate the excellent rust resistance offered by the s30v blade. I am greatly impressed with the performance of the blade. Paired with a good kydex sheath, this knife will stand above the bushcraft and survival knives crowd.

It is my favorite knife I've ever owned... I love the handle contours , and the steel is a good balance between wear resistance and ease of sharpening.. it doesn't rust , and while I was skeptical of s30v in a bush knife, I've been very happy with it And never had issues with chipping... The contours of the handle maybe off putting to some, but you'll totally get it , when you use it... I'm so mad they discontinued it, and I'll probably pick up another just in case.

Now that I own one and have used it quite a bit I'd like to warn buyers. My handle was screwed up but I fixed it . It was nothing that changed the handle just wasn't finished a bit on one side and lopsided. Also it had sharp edges, an easy fix with some sandpaper . That said my largest complaint... the grind is crap out of box, it's useless for woodcraft. The V grinds relief edge is pocket knife size and not what I want on a bushcraft blade of this type. Yes it was sharp and even perfect actually but way to short causing to much friction. Unfortunately for the average guy who most likely can't reprofile this knife it's gonna sting a bit. ...I was a bit grumpy considering the price tag. ..BUT not my first rodeo. I had no problem I was able reprofile the grind making it an actual woods tool . The steel is tough and for reprofiling it's a task for sure. That said the overall design of the blade including the handle imho is excellent. S30v is crazy good steel and when it gets sharp it's SHARP very keen. The spine being sharp is a non issue for me ... I've used tons of blades esp the Mora Garberg which cut the crap out of my thumb Their spine doesn't cut your thumb it's awesome ! I don't know how they did that but it's way cool like Chris Tanner says "what magic do they use" ..I wish Lt Wright and others could do theirs the same way I love it. I think the hate out there over the sheath is silly . Yes it's not perfect but imo it unique does the job and doesn't deserve the bad reputation. All it needs is water treatment to harden that buckskin. Benchmade should just use cowhide and scrap the fancy soft leather add a matching firesteel . If they did that the now insane $200 price tag would be ok. For now it's $30 over priced.... BUT I bought it anyways LOL 😆 I love the knife and am happy with it.

The longest no. But quite a long time yes. Also i tire of people saying things are easy to sharpen in the field. I really never cared for soft steels. Bring good steel and there's no need to sharpen it at all. Are you people cutting rocks or skinning more than 3 Deer. Come on!

I would think using the plastic insert would protect both the blade and the sheath from dampness, dirt, etc. I'm keen on Mora and their use of plastic sheaths, but they do tend to loosen up after a while. Bought one of these a few days ago and can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the encouraging review.

I just bought some fatwood. Yes, I had to because i don't live in the woods. I took my brand new Benchmade Bushcraft 162, feathered some of the fatwood. I also made scrapings off the fatwood from the spine of the knife. I took my brand new 1 inch ferrous rod and in a few scrapes i had fire going!! This was my first time ever making fire this way and it was very easy with this knife. Super sharp, super easy to feather wood and lots of sparks off the ferrous rod. Great honest review!

I like the sheath. I did put a bedding of epoxy down the edge-side of the sheath to protect the threading. Was easy to shape a groove into the epoxy as it hardened. I did have to clean the blade, but that was simple. Now, the blade sits very nicely and I feel much more relaxed when I re-sheath it. Also, I did take a file to round off the corners of the handle next to the blade. Once I put a larger radius on them, all was happy.

Why cant they make a 6.5" version of this... i don't know!!! I know they make the Arvensis in 6.5" blade, but thats like a tactical knife.... They need something to directly compete with the ESEE-6 and that basically would be a Bush-crafter with 6.5" blade... I would be all over it if they made one

Q: If you had to choose from this knife and the Spyderco Bushcraft - UK, which one would it be? A farm and ranch store I go to a lot carries Benchmade's and this is one of them. I picked up the Mini Grip 555SHG from them a while back and absolutely love it as much as my Spyderco's (I have the PM2 & B-UK). Thanks for the review!
@EverydayTacticalVids
@EverydayTacticalVids 9 лет назад
Man, tough choice. Major win for both - you'd be happy with both. For the money, I don't know I'd pay the difference (more) for the Spyderco. So I'd go with Benchmade. I like the handle shape BUT I like a bit more aggressive of a handle (the angles are steeper, less rounded).
@danofiremano

I now have both knives and they're both great in their own ways! I found the Spyderco at a decent price used, but not abused and bought this knife new at my local dealer for $150 on a store-wide sale.

Thanks for the video. There aren't that many out there on this knife. Perhaps, a lot of hardcore bushcraft people are turned off by the S30V steel which in my opinion is an absolutely fantastic knife steel. I love the knife so much I own two of them and they both perform great and hold an edge very well.

@trubadyr99
@trubadyr99 9 лет назад
Very good steel choise: tired of those strange cheapskate lovers of rusting high-maintenance high-carbon steels! About one-, one and a half inch short, though IMAO. In my opinion, also this knife's handle needs to be modified for the possibility to transform knife into a spear, or a ice-breaking ice-fishing tool better. The holes in the handle is a good start, but the handle won't lay tight enough to a branch, when user would try tighten knife to a branch to make a spear because of the "bumpy" shape of a handle. And its rear end isn't designed for this purpose also. I think it would be helpful for people interested in purchasing it to provide brand name of the fire-steel you use (it fits well into sheth) and your belt brand/model that is matching the leather of the sheath so well. Very decent minimalistic Bushcrafter knife. Good review!

Any knife's rating depends upon its use. I use Benchmade when I am working outside. The handle is excellent for gripping and cutting vines or chopping small brush and limbs. The steel takes a bit of sharpening, and I miss the choil. But wow does it cut, and S30V has great edge retention and good corrosion resistance. The thick handle also aids slashing. The sheath does not work for putting the knife back into blind. Also the balance is off for slashing, since the weight is heavier on the handle end. I recommend this knife primarily for the superb handle and the blade's cutting ability. Also the upper and lower finger guards on handle are a plus. Good review. You don't waste time.

I know this is an old post , I had the same opinion BUT after buying one recently it's not so man. The hook handle actually has blown my mind I'm honestly impressed with how it works. It don't hurt your hand and gives you an insane amount of purchase . For power cuts you get more leverage and can really power through the wood. I did have to soften the handle edges just a hair with light sandpaper just a couple minutes . Highly recommend this knife but the Vgrind sucks big time. Had to reprofile mine and thin up those shoulders . ..now it's wicked good.

Say Heah Tim, I really like my Bushcrafter #162, but it does take a little to get use to the extremely comfortable handle that just feels different then the conventional handles, the front of the handle is thicker than towards the pommel where it's narrower but once you use it and realize how much control you have with the handle and no hot spots I don't even notice it anymore and it continues to work super for me, one of my Fav's, the only thing is the sheath, I love the design of the sheath, it's very compact and for a lite carry system I sometimes use like my Benchmade Bushcrafter #162, my Wicked Tough Saw, and my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet, Yup the S30V is a great edge retention stainless that I can get it scary sharp, the only thing is it doesn't come with the dangler strap. I wonder why, because it has a dangler ring, and not too big of a belt loop, in other words you need sort of a narrow belt on the sheath, but Battle Horse have the solution the dangler strap for a very inexpensive price dangler strap that matches the color of the sheath a excellent leather quality in no time with just with a screwdriver I had a complete dangler system on my Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 it look's great and now it is a extremely compact and very functioning sheath, I love it, I also found perhaps one of the best folders made for my bush craft, it's called the Tree Frog, at the joint that area is weaker than in a fix blade, well the way Battle Horse designed this folder I think it's as strong as a fix blade and with my Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 is a extremely light and compact carrying system, again with my Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 and my Wicked Tough Saw the 2hawks Double Bit Hatchet and the Battle Horse Tree Frog Folder I could have alot of fun over a hot cup of coffee on the open fire, To this day I can't understand why the Bushcrafter #162 comes without the dangler strap, but they have the ring Hmmmmmmm mmmmmm mmmmmm !!!

@Lars1540

Tim I really disagree with you on this knife man. I bought this knife two years ago and was extremely disappointed. First, let's start with the knife: the grip is very cramped and I don't have big hands (size large gloves), and the bird's beak pommel doesn't allow for many grips. The handle itself has swells in all the wrong places and after all of that, they STILL managed to leave the handle blocky! It's so blocky in fact, that when gripping the knife in a standard hammer grip for carving, the blocky corner on the spine-side of the handle digs right into the bone on the inside of my thumb and causes bruising if I carve for too long. The handle is just complete shit. Finally, the sheath.... omg the sheath is a freakin' hot mess! First off, the knife sits in the sheath all fucked up.... Aesthetically the knife looks like it's hanging halfway out of the sheath. It's quite odd looking and frankly ugly. Then you have that stupid fucking D-ring....why?!? They give you the D-ring but don't provide us with the frigging dangler attachment! Just stupid. Not to mention, the D-ring constantly clanks off the knife handle throughout the day while wearing the knife. And if that weren't enough, when you remove the knife, the D-ring flops forward obstructing the sheath opening causing you to jam your knife into the metal D ring loop if you are not paying attention when you go to put your knife back into the sheath; a great way to trash your blade... Then you also have to deal with the leather button strap that constantly gets in the way and ends up getting cut before long. Finally, that cheap ass plastic insert in the sheath is just complete and utter fucking garbage. I expect a hell of a lot more for a $185 worth of knife! But instead you get a knife with a cramped handle, swells in all the wrong places that cause discomfort and pain, a sheath with half a Dangler set up, a knife that looks as though it's hanging halfway out of the sheath, a ring that bangs into your knife, and a cheap ass plastic insert to top it all off. I'm in the process of selling mine on craigslist now. I can't wait to get rid of this knife. And at $185, you're in the ballpark of being able to buy a Bark River knife, and ANY Bark River knife will have 1000 times better ergos than this piece of crap. Sorry, I just really hate this Benchmade. Mostly because I'm mad I wasted $185 on such a lousy knife for the money....

Great vid. Question: which do you prefer and why, benchmade or spyderco bushcraft knife? I did see both ur reviews. Thx

@EverydayTacticalVids 9 лет назад
+samlee458 Good question. To be honest, I've been using so many different knives that I haven't used the Spyderco that much. So I don't know that my feedback will be very balanced, but I do like the Benchmade a lot. I find it best to use with gloves though due to the not-so-rounded portions of the handle.

Say Heah, I you make a Paracord Loop, then pull it through the D-ring then pull your belt through it, you will make a poormans dangler, which I like alot better than how it rides high and besides I can use my survival belt which is around 2" wide.

Good lord, $180 dollars for S30V?! That's insane!!! I feel something like the Cold Steel Master Hunter gives more value as a bushcraft knife. The Master Hunter has CPM 3V for $100 dollars!

@ericgarcia5108
@ericgarcia5108 3 года назад
@@Simon-talks that's exactly my point. If a $100 dollar hunting knife, is better at bushcraft. Then a $180 dollar bushcraft knife, with a leaser quality steel. What does that tell you?

It has been a long time since you posted this video. Unsure if you get notified when people comment. After watching this, I went out and bought the 162. Hated the sheath, bought kydex from ebay and it is excellent. I have the Garberg, Survive knives GSO5, LT Wright Genesis and Bark River to name several. The Benchmade is every bit as robust and efficient at all the usual tasks. My conclusion is the Benchmade is the only knife I really needed to buy. In my opinion, it may be the best production bushcraft knife. Of course, I need all of my knives and blade steels with their various grinds. Oh, and I'll be the first to admit the benchmade in 3V would cause me to "have to" buy another one.

Hey Bob - I monitor all comments that come in. Thanks for sharing this and yes, I agree - a great knife. If they did do it in 3V I think they'd sell even more as well. Send me some pics of your knife if you get a chance.

Tim, thanks for responding, I've watched your other benchmade 162 vid as well. I am not sure how to send pictures to you, perhaps you can advise. I bought my sheath on ebay from someone called "bagwell". He did a great job and the price was right.

I tend to be ok with it if it's a 1/4 inch or more of blade. Smaller than that I avoid it. I find just slicing the wood can get me to drier wood.

A high point is how friendly they are to recycle after a camping trip. I have problems at those dumpsters sometimes. Especially with tents and sleeping bags. So to have a knife that's so easy to recycle after we use it is a nice bonus.

This knife is one of the more inexpensive ways to get a well-made knife made in CPM steel. Too bad about the poorly designed handle. One of the requirements of a bushcraft knife is being comfortable in any grip. This one fails miserably. Not even comfortable in fist/hammer grip let alone any other.

This is got to be one of my fav bushcraft knife for what I do and use my bushcraft knife for, first the size, I have some IMO great whittler's and carvers, like my John Bradley World's Finest Camp Knife and my Rod Garcia Skookum Bush Tool, both in around the + or = 4" blade lenghts, which is a very good hand extention size, then comes a all around blade lenght that's a great utility bushcraft camp knife which I think IMO is the best for me, often times I would say "boy I wish this bushcraft knife was a tich longer" that's why I think this knife is it, then the grind, nothing delicate about this grind, not like some carvers with their ultra thin carving blades that can chip yet my Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 is very sharp and does fine for what I do with it, and then the steel, it's a good super steel I like the CPM S30V, plus I got a break with a little luck mine is a first production run which is nice to know, the only other knife I own that I can compare between the two is my Freeman Hunter is also in the CPM S30V, although I bought them seperate, My Hunter and the Caper, I have the Hunter and Caper are both in the CPM S30V and Stag Handles and work great for me too, but my Bushcrafter #162 is my knife I like using the most, I have other bushcraft knives from O-1 to Austempered 52100 to SR-101 Steel to INFI Steel to 440c. and Custom Saw Blade Steel, I bought them for certain reasons and they all work great for me I believe you get what you pay for, I even have the Mora Companion and a couple of Puukku Style Knives I use as my bushcraft knives too like my Stromeng Buhku STAK made from 12c27 Stainless same stuff Mora Stainless Knives are made from, and ofcource the laminated VG-1 by C.S. and my Sisu another good bushcraft knife, but for some reason my Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 is just one of my fav's, it's a good one and after using mine for a little while, I most certainly would recommand it. I'm in the market for a Nessmuk style knife, but no I'm in no rush because my Bushcrafter #162 works really well with my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet, the only reason I think Nessmuk used a 2 bladed pocket knife was to save the edge on his belt carry but the steel was a bit different back then, this is where my Bushcrafter #162 shines it holds an edge like no mannyanna (tomorrow in Spanish) heh heh heh, I think I said enough, I really like my knife, Thanx for the nice review on one of my fav's, and have a Blessed Happy Easter. I completed the Dabgler with a leather frog and that makes a big difference, I like wearingbit as a dangler, I also very lightly sandpared it perfect for my hand taking off very, very little. Now it fits as good as a custom knife. ,, .
