For the reassembly - you can pull the lock back and insert a wooden skewer or similar rod to hold it back.

Tip: You can hold the axis bar in a retracted position by simply sliding a sturdy toothpick (square or round) in ahead of it after you pull it back. Beats the heck out of struggling to hold it retracted. You can also simply set the handles on the spine & the toothpick acts like a sort of kickstand allowing you to more easily manipulate things.

It's totally fine to let the g10 sit on the bottom of the pan. You're not going to melt or warp it at all with the length of time it'll be in there. I've done it many times, and haven't had any problems. The one thing I tell people is that less is more: take them out at 3 minutes tops, then rinse them & check the color. You can always put them back in to go darker, but there's no going back if it's too dark.
@JTsKnifeLife
@JTsKnifeLife 5 лет назад
Thanks for the info. The dogs get scared of the loud "pop" it makes if it sits on the bottom though hahaha.

Hey JT, how did you get the flat button head barrel spacer tubes out of the 555-1? I took mine apart the other day and they are tight in there. Should I use a small plastic hammer to tap them out? I would like to get custom scales but need to get them out before I order any. Any info would help. Thank you

Very timely - I want to swap a 555 (thumb hole) blade to a 556 (stud) frame. Have you ever run into fitment/lockup/centering issues when swapping blades?
@JTsKnifeLife
@JTsKnifeLife 4 года назад
Naw, never have. Sometimes the centering is different, but that's just a quality control issue, not a problem with interchangeability. All the fit is the same just to streamline production. Any of the blades should work on any frames.

i have a 556-1 mini grip like in this video. my big concern is that the omega spring doesnt rest in its own hole. theres just a notch in the cutout that the axis lock slides through (to take apart). also the cut out for the omega spring isnt shaped like yours. the bottom most part of the cutout on mine isnt round like yours but is shaped kinda like it follows the contour of the jimping. i bought it a month or so ago so im wondering if yours might just be an older design and they have updated the design? everything else is legit down to the holes in the blade.

@@dirtrider88 I have a 556-1 too and yes the spring rest in its own notch. I just bought a fake mini grip off eBay by accident. I could tell it was a knock off but it was done extremely well. One thing I noticed is the knockoff had a round axis lock hole where the real ones are more squared. My knockoff was circular and the omega spring went into its own pinhole instead of that slot your talking about. Which confuses me because his knife in this video was just like my knockoff. He put his omega spring into a pinhole and it had a circular axis lock . Did Benchmade change the design? I returned my mini grip to the seller.

Some sweet hood rappelling scale dye work! I used steel skewers and stirred while cooking. How long did it take on the g10 to get that color purple? Digging the look with the blue liners!
@JTsKnifeLife
@JTsKnifeLife 5 лет назад
It took close to thirty minutes actually. And I had to keep darkening the dye. Worked out in the end but it was a struggle.

Nice job JT! I’m on the fence about doing this with my bugout. Benchmade says you void the warranty with disassembly of the knife. If you sent that in for service would they decline it? Thanks for the video!
@JTsKnifeLife
@JTsKnifeLife 5 лет назад
They would probably deny it, yeah. I'd have to put back the original scales if I wanted to send it in. Once you dye them you can't undo it.

I asked them bout a week ago about my rift that I dyed and took apart and the said I could still send it in for replacement parts. Just ask them and they'll tell you about their policies

you realize 20cv and m390 are practically the same, right? I understand for novelty purposes but just seems a bit pointless. also when assembling you don't need to hold the axis lock open the entire time, only when you're inserting the blade and when tightening your pivot at first it helps centering. otherwise you can let it go once you have the blade in, you don't have to hold it while you're putting in the washers. also a better method is to put lube on the blade and washers and put the washers onto both sides of the blade and the lube sticks the washers to the blade, then you can insert the whole assembly at once and then just use a tool or pick to align the washers after you push everything in. though this method is easier when you either have one scale removed or when you have some of the screws loosened to provide a little more play when inserting the blade and washers together.
