A demo of a Doolin style bender, modified for venetian cut aways... If you have a specific question EMAIL ME DIRECTLY. RU-vid comment notices don't get to me so questions posted as comments don't reach me for about a year...
Thanks for this vid. I used some of your ideas to make my own doolin/venetian bender. it's a bit of a beast, but I wanted to thank you and give you credit.
@sjmay77 Glad to help! I'd love to see any photos/video you have. Being such an uncommon design, I think it's important to share all mutations of this idea...
A Venetian type is difficult. Being possible to constrict returns, and the cut away returns when it tries to bend can constricted, and when the cutter way is bent when bending it by the hand, it tries to make it from the jig because ours was not able to make so good [umaku] though the jig was made.Florence-Type is very easier. It is easy to crack when grain such as the backs and the Hawaiian cores is complicated. from JAPAN LUTHIERS
Hello Art, thank you for posting the video about side bending. If you dont mind , I have a few questions about your process: - what are the layers on the bender? - It seems like you wrapped the outer .007" slat with something, what is it ? - Do you wrap the wood with paper ? - According to Mike Doolin´s website on the Bender article, he does use perforated steel sheet, do you use it also ? Thank you very much.
I'm adding the extension to do the cut away! I'm using steel angle & springs. Do you use one or two springs? Any suggestions or advise on length of springs, bar, stop positions ?
