What I love about Benedict (or at least part of what I love about him) is that-though I realize actors seldom have their pick of the roles they play-he so often manages to wind up in thinking, soul-searching, often dark human condition stories and they all make great conversational meat. Even if I can't date him I'd kill to discuss his work with him, and he seems keen to talk about it, too.
He seems to be an amazing man. It must be very interesting having a conversation with him about different topics. He seems to be so intelligent and have a brilliant brain, like misterious, I'm sorry but there are few men like Benedict.
Interv - “Your recurring dream?” BCumber - “Being abandoned in my grandmother’s house on my own and waking up to find everyone is gone…. So speaks a child who went to boarding school. Abandonment issues! I think that’s bad but anyway. I forgive you mum and dad. It’s fine.” Interv - “What’s worth fighting for?” BCumber - “An awful lot. Your name, your privacy, your uh…family. Certain parts sometimes as an actor I think are worth fighting for in a sort of metaphorical way.”
I now completely understand the madness over him. Wow. He is fantastic in so many ways, and I do hope career-wise that he will continue to enrapture us all. Signed- an American girl starved for true acting talent in the mainstream.
He is very forthcoming and doesn't seem to be as shy as his bud Jonny Lee Miller. Could listen to him speak for hours on end. Waiting for 3rd season of Sherlock.
Interv - “What’s your audition piece?” Bcumber - “It was Ricky Roman - ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ and it was ‘O, What a Rogue and Peasant Slave Am I’ from Hamlet if you have to do your classical, new/modern.” BCumber - “Favourite/All-Time-Favourite Film is very hard, but I might go with Betty Draper and say ‘Singing In the Rain’ but there are lots of others: ‘Wings of Desire’ of Wim Wenders, um…‘The Bicycle Thieves.”
I like how he got frustrated when asked, "James Dean or James Stewart?" Someone did the same thing to me, "Andrew Scott or Vincent Price?" and I was torn.
Interv - “Poem known by heart?” BCumber - “Ahhhh. ‘Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock’ and ‘Ode to Nightingale.” Interv - “What would you say your guilty pleasure is?” BCumber - “I’ve got a sweet tooth, so banoffee pie ranks quite highly.” Interv - “What was the first record that you bought?” BCumber - “Now 24.” Interv - “And the book that changed your life?” BCumber - “Catcher in the Rye.”
Interv - “Grace Kelly or Grace Jones?” BCumber - “Grace Kelly.” BCumber - “Lenon or McCartney? Lennon…. Sorry Paul.” Interv - “And my final question is: What’s your fancy dress?” BCumber - “My fancy dress is a sort of um Snoop-Doggy-style-um-50’s-pimp-thing going on.” Interv - “I bet you wear it well… Thank you.” BCumber - “I do! I do. Been known to come out at weddings.” Interv - “Thank you.” BCumber - “My pleasure. Thank you.”
i agree. i think he puts up with the press in exchange for what he loves to do. i mean how many times is he asked about his voice, his "bromance" with Martin Freeman, his internet memes etc? how boring and annoying would it be to repeat the same answers over and over? he does it very politely and swiftly. i like a private man, that just means there's more to look forward to instead of getting the whole package in one setting. when i find out something new, i always squeal. (like his dancing) lol
Interv - “And your favourite villain?” BCumber - “Well I-I saw it again recently. I-I think… Heath Ledger’s Joker is utterly original.” Interv - “Who would you like to play you in a film?” BCumber - “Christopher Walken would -- It would be very funny to see - what - he would - DO! - to me.”
Interv - “Apollo or Dionysus?” BCumber - “Dionysus.” Interv - “Good cop or bad cop?” BCumber - “Bad cop.” Interv - “Dylan or Hendrix?” BCumber - “Pass.” Interv - “James Dean or James Stewart?” BCumber - “Oh NO! That is the -- you are -- you are digging deep into m-my soul of split personality, uh both!” Interv - “Optimist or pessimist?” BCumber - “Optimist.” Interv - “Minimalist or maximalist?” BCumber - “Minimalist.”
Interv - “What’s your signature dance?” BCumber - “Wow! Um… The ‘running man’ sometimes pops up but that’s definitely not my signature. That’s when I don’t know what’s good for me.” Interv - “What’s your USP?” BCumber - “Ahh. Being able to fart on cue.” Interv - “That’s impressive.” BCumber - “Thank you… No I didn’t mean to do that one.” Interv - “Money or sex?” BCumber - “Ohhh. Sex!”
Interv - “Your favourite hour of the day?” BCumber - “Uh…dusk and dawn. Transitional hours. The magic hours where light changes.” Interv - “Do you have any irrational fears?” BCumber - “N-Nooo. I’m quite a rationalist. I’m not superstitious. I think life is…uh…life is too full of…uh…natural wonders an-and logical…um…complexities to worry about illogical things.”
Clearly I have nothing better to do with my time. But since I'm watching it over and over, why not? So as requested, subtitles. Sorry about the multi-posts or weird format on parts. ----------------- BCumber - “My name is Benedict Cumberbatch and this is ‘My Cultural Life’ for Harper’s Bazaar.” Interv - “What’s your favourite cliché?” BCumber - “You can’t take it with you when you go.”
