Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch talks to a mass rally in Westminster about the risks of arts spending cuts expected in the Government's Comprehensive Spending Review.
It's interesting and very brave of him to speak about such a highly political topic in public. I wish more celebrities would speak their mind and tell people what they think like that.
He's fantastic in stuff "over the pond," (I live in the U.S.,) and I am so glad he's going to be in films here! I can't wait for Star Trek 2, and the Hobbit! (And season 2 of Sherlock!) He is very talented, and that voice...!
As an american I will say this, The arts have been nearly completely cut out of our schools, studies show that kids involved in the arts do better in other subjects as well. The economy here is piss poor, and yet the movie industry is booming, there is definitely money oto be made and the local theaters and art programs are hugely important to artists. Get rid of the arts and you will ruin human kind. I kid you not......
2/3s f the slice of a pizza : > D is what the Arts Council runs on, per year. I love it that he can make a joke about himself. Way ahead of so many . . .
As an American, (of a certain age,) I've seen continuous cuts to funding for the arts in my lifetime. We are not better for it. We are less educated, less intellectually/culturally/emotionally rich. Museums are out of the range of poorer families, PBS/NEA are near being abolished and art/music in schools will never come first ahead of sport. I am so grateful that the UK isn't taking this lying down. Hopefully, you can avoid the cultural bankruptcy we seem to embrace like lemmings.
I agree...I feel like I'm starving for culture and those around me right now don't seem to know how malnourished in the arts, culture, and intellect they truly are..
...you can say he's an actor, he shouldnt get involved, but hes a human being and has a right to his opinions too. NOt only that but you people saying" well if you like the arts , you pay for em" everybody likes the arts my friend, do you watch t.v. films, listen to music, read books? Art is everywhere and everything... take that away and you will destroy the beauty that humans can bring and add to the world. And your also setting up a world for our children where they cant be creative and free.
And the reason taxpayers should fund the 'arts' is? The reason tourists shouldn't pay to get into our museums the way we do if we go to theirs is? The fact is Taxpayers shouldn't have to fund trendy cliques producing stuff the vast majority either don't want to see or can't afford to see either through time or money. If 'arty' types like it, then support it yourselves. It's no different than if the taxpayer were forced to chip in to buy Chelsea a new striker.
Ruiner the idea that the sole purpose of any service/enterprise can only be financial profit is very primitive and destructive. you seem to be very hard of thinking. fire dept ?
I was talking about his quote on the arts council where he said if you put £1 in then you get £2 back. Not a fire department which is an actual service for people which everyone needs. I don't think anyone's lives would be at risk if an arts council was defunded from public money.
