There are many miles of drystone walls around fields in New England and Virginia, and probably other areas, that have had little or no maintenance since they were built in the 1700's or 1800's. Some were build more roughly, basically as a linear pile at the field's edge, while others were more carefully constructed of either naturally flat stones or stones rounded by glacial action that were somewhat shaped to allow the stones to fit together better. At one time, ditches were dug around some fields being cleared, and hogs rolled most all the smaller stones into the ditches as they turned over the soil in the field, creating a base for the stone walls that would help prevent damage to the walls due to frost heaving. Keeping ice from forming inside dry stone walls is also important to their long term structural integrity.

Beautiful work there, Zach. A stone wall like yours is an enduring part of the landscape and part of a time-tested building tradition. One made with mortar is likely to be a temporary imposition, build for the point-of-sale only.

In New England (elsewhere, too, no doubt), there are a number of drystone arch bridges that carry a considerable traffic on a daily basis. Typically spanning smaller streams that the more well known covered bridges of the region built of wood (many of which are also still in use), these well-made stone arch bridges are now well beyond 100 years old, and continue to serve their purpose usually with no maintenance except the road way surface - while modern concrete and steel bridges in the region have needed costly maintenance or replacement. These attractive bridges stand as examples of how building things well, building to last, using knowledge and natural materials can save money and decrease environmental impact, as the stone was all locally sources granite, harvested and shaped near the site of the bridges being built. It's good to see people keeping alive.the knowledge of how to lay stone without mortar.

Nice commentary

It is not just the "low embodied energy" ... mortar has a whole industry behind it with many ingredients which are very inefficient to produce.

Yes there is a hole industry behind it that's for sure. Each have there application no doubt. No need to make a dry stack look when you could just make it without mortar is the real take home for me. Which is what Zach points out in this video.

If I have a small yard and need a 25’ long stone border to enhance the flower bed, does it matter if it’s dry stack or mortar? I’m talking only maybe 8”-12” tall. I’m don’t think I have the talent locally to dry stack properly.

Whatever works for you. If you do it, dry stack, you can always come back later to add more, remove it, or if needed, simply repair it. Just buy some really big stones or with that size just consider using boulders. 1 and done then off to the next. If anything, you rent a stand on skid steer and really set some nice boulders. Nothing will move then. 😊

Sounds like he's talking about a retaining wall more than a free standing wall !!

Really applys to all dry laid stone wall construction. A freestanding wall is the same construction as a retaining wall.

See description for Video for link to foundation blog I did. RU-vid will not let me post it. 4-6" large stones for base. See blog on how too. I have another video I will put up. MarkJurus ------------------ Thank you Bret - thank Zach for such a great job! MarkJurus 1

I've been trying to explain myself to people the advantages of dry stone. I don't understand why it's not used more.

I had an engineer dismiss dry stack for no real reason. Corrupt.

Hello Albert-forlini. Most unfortunately do not have the resources in order to reference proper methods. Keep in mind regional stone from one area to another will dictate a great deal of the information needed to come up with specs. Don't worry it's all making a comeback. Just take some time.

I’m a fan of dry stack wall but I always install gravel behind the wall to allow water to drain to gravel footer and drain pipe. Is this wrong? Thanks
@RockinWalls
@RockinWalls 3 года назад
YES! Thank you for your comment. Check out my Hopewell Furnace National Park Service Video I did. Gravel caused the wall to fail! Proper dry stone walls do not have gravel, drainage pipes nor landscape cloth. They are also double sided just like a freestanding wall. Not one sided which is how many uneducated professionals build them. DONT TAKE MY WORD. Pick up one of this great book the Dry Stone Walling a practical handbook ~ Alan Brooks & Sean Adcock Normally goes for $65.00 The Stone Trust or the Dry Stone Conservancy have them listed for sale. I'm no engineer so I like to use historical structures to find truth in what works. Some of the oldest know structures are 5000-7000 old Skara Brae. Back to the basics. A dry stone wall is flexable, free draining and living. So if this is the case why would you need any of the other stuff? Also take look at my Ellicott City Historical Granite wall video. This wall dates 150-200 years old. Still standing. Also one other wall I documented wall in PA. Sorry the sound on the video is horrible. But the wall is well over 75 years up in the mountains of PA. Still standing. Both the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain DSWA ( world wide standard) and Dry Stone Conservancy US DSC do not teach or suggest any of the questioned methods. GREAT QUESTIONS AND THANK YOU FOR ASKING. 😊

Nice collaboration guys. Russtone11 ----------------------------------- Good job on the video. Can you please explain how the base of the walls are created? Is there a stone footing or do the stones just set on top of the ground? Thanks. Bret C BretChilcott

Rockin Walls the area where the wall is going is dug out to firm soil even to the clay. Then the biggest stones are placed.easy really😬

There’s a much longer “ green” argument to the Dry stacked stones because concrete off gases CO2 as it dries And then there are those of us who I understand the politics of sand these days
