We have 2 Bengals, 2y and 1,5 y. The girl is just to intelligent. She can open doors, cupboards and she even learned to flush the toilet. It's great to wake up at 2am to the sound of a cat flushing your toilet 5 times in a row...

Hey there, I recently adopted a 1 year old Bengal and she became really wound up late at night. Her hair stood up, her tail was puffed up, and she was charging at my girlfriend and I in a sideways motion. Is this considered normal play or is this something I should be worried about?
@jenawelch2547
@jenawelch2547 7 лет назад
Dallas Cote this isn't really something you should worry about the kitten most likely had a lot of energy in its system. I recommend that you play with your cat at least 2-4 times a day. When you play with them it takes them at least 30 minutes to tire them out

I rescued what I thought was a tabby kitten but it turns out that the tabby is part Bengal. I had never seen such a determined animal. She follows me everywhere, has to know what I am doing all the time. She is aggressive with the other cats at times. Smart is an understatement.

I'm glad I got my Bengal before I saw this video otherwise I'd missed one of most fun cats I've ever had and my age (69) I've had a lot of cats. She makes most of the qualities that make Bengal a Bengal seem like a negative. They are like having a perpetual 2year old child and that is( to me) their most endearing qualities.

My 4 yo Bengal is not too bad as I can see from the video. He doesn't climb everything that he can climb in the house. Even his cat tree is sits unused. He was loving it for 1.5 years and then stopped using it altogether. He is not going into shelves, doesn't open or close doors, doesn't scratch anything but his scratching pole. BUT he goes outside and he climbs fences in no time. And yes, he is territorial, every other animal is hushed away. And he is a predator, mice and rabbits are nonexistent around my house. And in the winter when he doesn't like being outside too much, than it's too much of him inside ))) he doesn't let you make a step, always with you, always wants to be pet. He is half dog basically. But he was trained to behave. No climbing tables and counters, no scratching whatever. He is very extremely intelligent.

I recently acquired a bengal cat, I didn't seek one it was accidental and after previously having 3 cats I have learned that bengal cats are so lively....bitey too, way bitier than my 3 that I have had since kittens. They are playful and if you have the energy to match, it's a nice match, don't get one if you want a calm cat!

Hi, good advice. We had four Bengals. I bought my wife a cat to replace the one she had to leave in Kenya, it came into season, we bread with an F4 and ended up keeping the kittens because too many people wanted to use them to breed. No regrets but a lot of work, neighbours Christmas turkey was not safe on top of the refrigerator, his Koi carp didn't swim fast enough and he should not have left his barbeque unattended. They would gang up and terrorise another neighbours dog to the point where the neighbour knocked on my door to complain. Eventually had to put an electric fence around our garden to keep the cats in, this was bad news for the poor foxes who came in but couldn't get out, the cats really enjoyed the chase. The mother was always able to find a way of getting out, which took weeks to discover, we stop that route and she would find another. They loved the shower, would not allow anything to be hung on the wall and curtains were not allowed in their house, they learned how to bang cupboard doors in chorus to wake us for food in the morning. Those plug in calming devices were pee'd on as soon as they were plugged in. The veterinary nurse was not allowed to wear a blouse, much to the amusement of the vet, the bird table was a great place for one of them to sleep as was the neighbours bed. The antique French leather armchair was a much better scratching post than anything you could buy or make. Sadly they are all gone now and the mother lived longest, twenty years and two weeks. We miss them so much but would never replace them, its just too painful when they go. We are still very good friends with the neighbours even though we moved seven years ago, they still send us photo's of when the cats were getting up to some mischief. There is a saying "dogs have owners and cats have staff" it is never more obvious than when you are recruited by a Bengal.

I guess I have the best Bengal ever. She doesn't climb up on anything except the back of the recliner, doesn't break anything & I have knick-knacks and plants, she doesn't scratch my furniture , she has a scratching post, she obeys me, stays out of the bedroom.....I can't brag about her enough, I really got lucky. Maybe because I rescued her from living in a small cage & she's appreciative. 😊

People say they should be allowed to run around outside. I had a (one) Bengal for 21 years. He was a handful til the end. I never let him out because I was afraid he would attack other animals. I think Bengals are not as aggressive as they were 20-30 years ago. They used to call it "confrontational." Meaning you would shake your finger "No," and the Bengal would attack it. My Bengal didn't like being sprayed with water. I kept a spray bottle for special moments. He was extremely possessive about cardboard boxes and paper bags. It was extremely unwise to stick an arm or bare foot into either when he was in it. Two things I would especially mention - if you have pill containers or contact lens cases - at night put them inside of a drawer the cat hasn't figured out how to open. Second, my guy chewed through electric cords in a flash - just in passing on the way to do other things. He was wise enough, somehow, not to chew on 110 v. cords, just all the cords on items with batteries - like headphones, and all those cords behind the TV set, computers. I found if I sprayed them with "Bitter Apple," he left them alone. We had many bookcases, and he would put items he liked, pens especially, under them. Guests would say to me, "I just saw your cat go into the other room with a pen in his mouth." He would go back and fetch them out when he was bored and knock them around a bit. Not only do they like to jump, but they can jump prodigious distances horizontally and vertically. They have muscles like steel springs. My Bengal would climb up people as well as things. He was not climbing with his claws. He was jumping to my or someone else's shoulder, and springing upward from there. Bing, bing, bang. This is one of the things I went to a lot of effort to discourage and he got the idea. It didn't keep him from jumping up other people. Bear in mind - cats in general and Bengals in particular, you should not rough-house with. It's a war game to them. On a slightly different note, mine was fond of attacking my feet through the bed covers at night. Spray bottle definitely called for. I wanted a second cat so I got a Siamese female kitten thinking she would have the best chance of getting along with my Bengal. I rubbed her scent on him and his scent on her for about 4 days and then let them meet each other. It was love at first sight. She rubbed all over his chest and told him what a big handsome fellow he was. And he was blown away. He adored her. He thought she was the cutest little thing he had ever seen. For the next 20 years, he would throw his front paw over her and wash her down and she would purr. I don't think she ever learned to wash herself. He liked sleeping with her. The last 5 years of his life, he took a liking to the bath tub. While people showered, he would walk back and forth on the side of the tub. He demanded the tub faucet be turned on so he could drink water out of it at all hours of the day and night. After his teenage years passed and we adjusted to each other, he was a great cat. Other people found him very entertaining. P.S. He needed a big litter box.

I got a cat from a farm a month and a half ago. By the looks and nature of her, she is part Bengal! Thank you for this great video on how to make the house more comfortable for us! It helped me understand my 15-week kitty better. She has been in the box mattress, is learning to open the jewellery box by pulling on the knob, is fascinated by sinks and the climber in her has reached all but the top of the kitchen cabinets. I am definitely going to get her a bed for the window and my boyfriend and I plan to build her a cat tree. Thank you once again! Your Bengals are gorgeous by the way. :-)

I had a Bengal for 19 years. She was the sweetest, most devoted and most beautiful cat you have ever seen. I have always had cats but dealing with Shundor (Beauty in Bengali) was a learning experience for us both. Bengals are insatiably curious and will poke their nose into any new thing so you have to be a little careful about what you leave lying around. They also require more stimulation than most domestic breeds so you always need to have toys around and lots of interactive play time. Two caveats to owning a Bengal, (actually they believe they own you); they have very long back legs and are incredible jumpers. Shundor could jump from the floor to the top of my 4 1/2 foot dresser without even thinking about it, then when they get up there they are annoyed that it isn't a nice place to sleep because its too crowded so they will push everything off until they are comfy. Second they are incredibly vocal. They talk all the time! They are really funny since it is fairly easy to see what they are calling about. Food is obvious, but Shundor used to get up on the bed and imperiously demand that it was time for me to come to bed with her because she was sleepy. They also have a kind of continuous chirp or ''ack ack ack" going up and down scales. But, they are loud! If your Bengal wants something it is best to obey immediately. To wrap up, she was the best cat I ever had and I still miss her 15 years after her passing.

Thanks for this video. It is so helpful. My cat, who I think is a Bombay, acts the way you describe. I keep my glasses in a crock since the cat knocked them off the table, batted them around, and it took me two days to find them. He also knocks down lamps (and broke one) and seems fascinated by lampshades and the light bulbs they enclose. I replaced the broken porcelain lamp with a wooden one. Fortunately, most of my lamps are metal. I have had to rearrange furniture so the cat can't reach high shelves and knock down candles, etc. He also likes to recline by the Nativity set, and he knocks the figures over (fortunately, they're resin, not pottery). He likes miniblinds and the cords of vinyl roll-ups. I am in the process of replacing these with curtains. He also is a great screen climber, and manages to climb two-thirds up the French door to the porch. I use the positive reinforcement of treats, and the squirt bottle for bad behavior, such as biting people's feet and getting on the table while they're eating. I'm happy to say that he uses the litter box and has not pooped on the bed. Living with this kind of cat is one way to simplify and become neater! The plus is that this kitty is good company, graceful, handsome, and smart.

Alina N a lot of bengals love water and think it's not a punishment. I recommend that you get a metal can with some bolts in it and shake it when they go somewhere you don't want them to go. And if you don't want them on the counters then you can put double sided tape on some cardboard and set it on your counters. When they jump on the counters they will jump off immediately because they hate it when their paws are sticky

The Katy Show: All animals have their own personality, including alligators (which we've had several). Our cast weren't Bengals but were 100% personality! Now we have a Siamese/Tabby mix and she is the most laid back and easy going kitty of the bunch. Sox was one of our big boys (Tabby mixed with Bobcat). Very feisty and fun but on the wild side late at night! I don't think any of our cats ever stole anything but they sure did get into stuff!!! Sometimes you couldn't find them and they'd be rolling around in the clothes basket inside the closet or just hanging from the top of closet doors. They were inside cats and never went outside because we lived in a trailer park where people were constantly dropping off animals and the place was always loaded with strays. After we bought our house (their living space doubled in size) they still did the same things but seemed a lot more laid back, so I think space is a really big issue for them sometimes.

How many treats a day is it ok to give your bengal. I’m asking because if you are clicker training your cat wouldn’t you have to give a lot of treats for a lot of positive reinforcement

My now five year old cat is half Bengal, unfortunately he was the only one of his litter to not get the colouring so I didn't know until I brought him into a specialist at the age of two. Knowing earlier would have been amazing. Many shower curtains shredded, not to mention waking up in the night to see him walking across the ceiling because he was bored and thought it was fun. Also had to remove all spring door stops.just to name a few of his favourite things.

We have had cats for decades and 3 bengals over the years. One thing I would add as a must is a cat wheel. Our bengal will even run on it at night to get his ya ya out. Well worth the expense and probably saved us even more behavior problems. Great video thanks.

Watching and listening to this and it sounds so much like my 5 year old cat Gizmo,who I am almost certain of that has the same bengal cat personality. We got him from the R.S.P.C.A as someone had surrendered him at only 8 months old. He has a tabby pattern and really silky fur like a seal's would be. He loves to climb and scratch and also loves splashing in water. The Vet told us he would be a big cat as he was still growing at age 4 and he is really big and has a big appetite to match. We put him on a diet and it went nuts,attacking everyone till we gave him back his normal diet again.. lol. You cannot close any doors in the house if he cannot get to us he goes nuts too.

Alyssa: Wow, I didn't know you had this channel too! We've never had Bengals but we had 2 brothers who were Tabby mixed with Bobcat. Very feisty, large and a LOT like your Bengal (I know you're not in an apartment anymore cuz I have been following you guys on your homestead off and on). Our boys were incredible! Sox was the older of the 2 by several hours and he weighed in at 21 pounds and his brother Rascal weighed 28 pounds! Chubby fellow but lightning fast and a GREAT mouser! Rascal would catch a mouse and bring it to his brother Sox and Sox would play with it and bat it around for a LONG time before finally killing it. Then Rascal would bring it to us and drop it at our feet and meow until we gave him some attention and told him good job! Sox on the other hand would get feisty late at night and run from one end of the house to the other over and over and over again! He was like greased lightning! We had a German Shepherd named Cheyenne. She would chase Sox around the house and up the stairs and pretty soon you'd see Sox chasing her! They were just inseparable! We miss all three of them too. We had Cheyenne 8 years and Sox and Rascal 14. We now have three German Shepherds (2 of them are her pups) and a half Tabby, half Siamese cat who is so gentle. She's nothing like the Tabby/Bobcat mixes we had. I have a photo of Sox snuggling up with his best friend...a Golden Macaw of all things! Very cool animals! SO with all of our experiences with our big boys we totally understand what you went through with your Bengals!

Considering a bengal cat in future. 2 questions- 1- if you take them fur walks in the harness outside will some of that energy get worn out? 2- are they affectionate at all and lap cats at all or sleep by themselves? I’ve not seen any videos of them being truly affectionate just playing and meowing and getting into trouble. Lol.

Behaviour wise, I think there was a bit of bengal in my old cat... She'd play fetch, was persistent about getting into my closet for no reason, would jump from my desk to the door, wait for the door to swing to the closet and jump on top... Then be too scared to jump down, and meow until I'd come help her down. And she was of course a smart little cookie. Would always come when I called for her. Generally more cuddly than playful though

To get my two off the counter or wherever they are I just have to say OFF. I get moaned at but it does the trick. They're clever enough to learn a lot of words. My boy runs home when I call his name and say brush time. My girl prefers the word pretties to brush. They're so rewarding and need so much more stimulation than other cats. I'm always making new things for them to enrich their lives. As well as my two 5 year old siblings, I have another baby boy coming soon 😄

@mattclarknyc 7 лет назад
Please... I'll take that glass of wine and valium if no one else is claiming it. I love her so much, but my Bengal loves to use the hours between 4am and 11am to make me want to die. She climbs onto everything I haven't made "Muffin-proof", but that doesn't stop her from knocking things on the floor and driving me insane with meows that make no sense (cause she has food, water, a litter box, and everything else she needs). Sometimes she seriously drives me to wit's end. I need that wine and valium, please.

I have a non-bengal feral cat that acts as you describe. But I also have a little terrier mutt who plays with my cat when she acts like that and basically keeps the cat entertained. lol So yeah.....get a puppy....raise it with the cat....and they'll be play buddies. Until then..... (Hands a BIG glass of red wine and little Valium tablet over to you). Relax and enjoy. :)

My Bengal seems to mainly go on the counters to get to the sink, looking for water, which is usually only when her water dish is empty, so I know to give her some more. I've been pretty amazed that my cat almost never goes after my food. The only thing she always goes after is milk. I can't pour myself some milk without her going after it. Other than that, she seems to understand that she's not to go after my food. Sometimes, when I'm eating eggs or ham, I'll give her some and she obviously enjoys it, buts she's still really good about not getting into my food. I can generally leave a dish of just about anything unattended and walk away for a few minutes, and know that she won't get into it. But for some reason, she just won't leave plastic spoons and forks alone. They're like her favorite playthings. And ketchup packets. She loves biting into ketchup packets. Cats are weird.

Awesome video. We adopted a "large tabby 7 month old kitten" from Petsmart and we brought him to the vet for his year check up and he turned out to be bengal. We knew he was smarter than our other cats when he opened our fridge to get better view of the outside We were yelling at our teenagers for leaving the fridge door ajar until we caught him doing this. And I often say I have another 3 year old in the house even though he is only 2 right now. We have found that our cat has a suicidal tendencies. He wants to get into plastic bags and anything plastic. So we have to make sure these are out of reach for him. We also have to cut the handles of paper shopping bags because he finds a way to get his neck caught in them. This goes for the cloth reusable sacks from certain stores, we hide them. Titan also has this obsession with water. He knows how to turn the faucets on in our bathroom to get a drink and after we shower he jumps in the tub to try to catch the drops from the shower head. He is fascinated on watching water go down a drain and often tries to dig the water back up when we are doing dishes and we are extra careful with our garbage disposal because he will dig in there too. Our kids nicknamed him doof, but he is anything but that. He has brought so much more entertainment to our house along with our other cats, but we we really need to "babysit" and pay more attention to Titan than the rest. Oh and Xmas trees. Forget about decorating them if you have a bengal. The tree winds up being their property that is anything on it or underneath it. He unwrapped presents last year, so this year we just got him another tree and put lights on it while he was locked in the bathroom and put unwrapped presents under the tree on Xmas eve.

My boy shinned right up the wall because he saw a fly on the ceiling. I had to redecorate. He also fed treats to the dog, including a whole pizza in a box that had been left on the kitchen counter for 2 minutes. He just chucks the stuff on the for for the dog to open. He also opens the gate for the dog.

One of the absolute best tools that we have found is clear heavy duty plastic rug runner - the kind that has little hard plastic spikes on the back to make it stick to the rug when you lay it down. Now, cut it the size of your stove or the counter that you do not want your bengal cat on & lay it down with the spikes pointing upwards. You will probably have to set something heavy on it like some books or else those dang smart cats will just swipe the rug runner off of the surface! We found that it does not work well with kittens...maybe they are not heavy enough for the spikes to hurt their paws? However, on the bigger cats, they do not like it & will avoid that surface!! Has worked great to keep them away from the front of the TV & other places. Good luck!

Bengals only do all of that nonsense shown in the video, when they have a boring life. If they have an active & interesting life & have fitting cat buddies to play with, they are less demanding & stubborn than Siamese. I own a Siamese Boy, a Burmese Boy & a Bengal Girl. (& in the past owned a second Siamese, but she died recently) My Bengal rarely knocks something over, otherwise she is well-mannered. She needed training of course, but my other 2 cats did too. Don't get me wrong, Bengals are work, but so are any cats of active breeds.
