Thank you so much for making this, I see is few creators make content on the Benin kingdom, as a Nigerian this breaks my heart. But this is probably the best produced and most easy to understand video, not just about the Benin kingdom, but African history I’ve yet to see.

No, they didn't. Slave trade was actually looked down upon. Slave trade = population loss = low labor & military manpower. They definitely wouldn't want this
@physikus7888
@physikus7888 Год назад
Yes, they somehow forgot all the slave parts. A reason of Benin strength was the good relation to Portugal with focus on slave trading. A reason for it's downfall was that more and more European countries banned slave trading and the Benin region got unstable afterwards.

The people in the Benin area during the 1800s exported much more than palm oil. They raided their neighbours for slaves to sell to Europeans for guns, so that they could raid for even more slaves. The whole economy in what became Benin depended almost exclusively on constant slave raiding. The situation got so bad even the British - notorious slave traders themselves had to blockade the coast of Benin to stop slaves from being forcibly sent to nations like Brazil and Cuba. Even further, no mention at all was made of the 'Annual Customs'. This was a ritual ceremony in which up to 4000 people were murdered, often by beheading in one day. Benin, formerly Dahomey was a nation of murderous psychopaths who did great harm to Africa and black people in general.
@lanxlanister8721
@lanxlanister8721 Год назад
You don't even know the difference between Benin Republic from Benin kingdom. The Benin Republic formally the kingdom of Dahomey sold slvs,this video is talking about the Benin empire also known as Edo Kingdom never sold slvs, there no record of it happening there. In fact it was forbidden to sell slvs as the Edos where too rich and powerful for that useless trade. Once again go back and do better research
@haatpraat2993
@haatpraat2993 Год назад
@@lanxlanister8721 I mentioned in my comment 'the Benin area'. I do not believe your comment about slavery being forbidden by Africans. This never occurred and if it did, it was started again. Africans at that time felt compelled to sell each other for guns so that they would not be sold and felt compelled to sell each other because of the cheap trinkets and goods they got from white in exchange for their fellow Africans. Even Africans acknowledge this repulsive behaviour on their part.

@@haatpraat2993 you want to tell an African who came from the very same place what happened 🤣. The internet is a funny place. First of all the Benin empire is not same area with Dahomey. And sorry to bust your bubble,yes some Africans had the human dignity not to seek humans like cattle and my ancestors where one of those who forbade it,I guess all your life you have lived thinking all Africans sold slaves,newsflash the great Edo people never sold slvs it was and still is beneath us. That's why the British needed to invade our kingdom and burn the city down. No slvs decendants share any DNA tracing back to our kingdom that's how great we are.

@haat praat. He’s correct in that the Benin kingdom fully participated in capturing and selling slaves to European traders ever since 1485. They also practiced human sacrifices and cannibalism. The British very much wanted to put an end to the barbaric practices as well as develop good trading relationships with the Oba, but instead he sought brides, extortion and restricted trade. When a peaceful mission was sent to address these issues they were massacred by the Benin this resulted in a punitive force being sent to exact revenge on the Oba and the destruction of his despotic and cruel reign. To offset the cost of the expedition they looted the Oba’s wealth.

It wasn't only palm oil and ivory that the Europeans came to buy, you conveniently left out that they also came to buy slaves. The long and short of this video is that the British took away benin's independence, just like benin took away the independence of some of its neighbours and required them to pay tributes or risk a punitive war

That is Republic of Benin 🇧🇯 (country) formerly known as The Kingdom of Dahomey who were slave traders. The Benin Empire (Edo people/tribe) in Nigeria 🇳🇬 is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from Benin 🇧🇯 Dahomey. Use your internet to educate yourself, not displaying your ignorance everywhere. My people have nothing to do with that BS and we DO NOT have the same DNA as those people.
