THis is one of the lest works written by B. Britten, at a time when he was severly ill. The major works of Britten could appear as belonging ro a rather illustrative style (Oeter Frimes, Wer requiem, Death in Venice, etc.... but he was excellent in the more abstract stle of pure symphonic and chamber music too. These more absrect works nevertheless keep en alusive link. with his mood, strugles, etc... The three quartets are excellent, bioth in terms of writing technique nad exression, typical of his touth, his mature and final style. Beyond the differences in language, we can retrieve here the mood of such SQ a=s beethoven's last ones,, Smletana, Sibelius, Barrok 6th ,or his friend Shostakovitch's last ones.
