Benjamin Disraeli: Jewish-Born Prime Minister of England (Jewish Biography as History)

Baptized at age 12 as the result of his father's dispute with a synagogue, Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) rose to prominence as a novelist and politician, serving several times as England's Prime Minister. Colorful and flamboyant, Disraeli dismissed his antisemitic critics by emphasizing, rather than downplaying, his Jewish origins.

My one real issue is with the jokes! Next time you swindle some funds for a lecture series, please allow for some input from a comedy write or two in the budget. It will be worth it.

Bravo!. Excellent lecture, with very important information. In particular I appreciated your explanation of Distraeli's "proto Zionism." This is a topic that receives little attention in scholarship -- or at least I have had problems finding valid and reliable sources. The longing for Jerusalem and Judea shows up in the historiography of 17th - 18th century Jewish communities, both Hasidic and non, and eventually in the Reform movement of the 19th century. Do you think that Disraeli was in fact a supporter and member-in-spirit of the Reform?

Dr Abramson, Disraeli was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, not England. England has never had it's own Prime Minister in the common sense, and even the it has not had it's own Head of Government since the Union with Scotland in 1707. England and United Kingdom/Great Britain are not synonymous.

Is this citation true ?
@oremfrien

+Helios Noxel The footnote in the English says: See the novels Tancred and Coningsby. In the latter Sidonia says: “Race is everything; there is no other truth. And every race must fall which carelessly suffers its blood to become mixed.“ The quote is accurate, but it must be noted that while the character of Sidonia is often seen as parroting Disraeli's personal views, this was not a government speech or similar. Disraeli was pseudoscientific racist, holding that different races were of different merits. He argued that the Jewish Race and the other Races of Europe were high quality races and preserved their quality by not intermarrying.

For a very funny take on Victorian attitudes take a look at "The Way We Live Now" by Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope. He is very funny - belly laugh funny - about Jewry at this time. If you don't have time to read the book through, there's an audio version read by Timothy West (no less!) you could play in the car, kitchen, lounge etc. (No one has asked me to say this: I heartily recommend this to all!)

What should also be noted here is that the British Labour party , in spite of its constant soap boxing and bleating about equality and opportunity for all unlike the supposedly racist and rigid Tory party; Only elected someone who could be termed as an ethnic minority leader as late as 2011 , The Tories had Disraeli as leader long before there was race quotas and unlike Labour has had a female leader.

Figure is in pop culture because of the Clapton band album title, and the anecdote relayed is a guitar roadie tries to say derailleur, referencing the bike chain mechanism, but instead says Disraeli gear mistakenly...which Clapton and his chums find uproariously funny to the point of naming their debut album Disraeli gears. My curiosity is why is Disraeli so commonly referenced in 1960's/70's hippy culture in Britain, that the guitar roadie says his name to describe the bike chain device, accidentally. I can over read into anything, but I don't know why Disraeli must have been a pretty common place English reference in those decades, for the roadie to make the mistake, and Clapton to find it hysterical.

The current leader of the British Labour Party Ed Miliband has claimed he wants to be the UK's first Jewish Prime Minister. This as caused much negative comment in the UK as Miliband has previously stated he is an atheist and he seems to have completely ignored Disraeli. Does a Jewish atheist have more claim to being Jewish than a Jewish convert to Christianity? Does anyone have an answer. Both have rejected Judaism as a religion so from my layman's perspective they are as ethnically Jewish as each other. Is that right?
@jfwduffield1
@jfwduffield1 10 лет назад
Thanks for the rely. I imagine the concept of Jewishness is a very controversial subject. Milliband's comments were negatively received in the UK as most people consider Disraeli as Britain's first Jewish Prime Minister and are proud of his extraordinary career. Do you have any plans for any more lectures on famous British Jews? Herbert Samuel maybe? Or even Chaim Weizmann who was a naturalised British citizen.

21:43- Isaac continued to be a member of the jewry and paid his dues regularly. His attitude was so long he was not bothered by them, he was not against them. But in their enthusiasm, the jews made him the president of the local synagogue but he refused. For this he was reprimanded by the Jews and he broke with them. This information is from the English book on Disraeli I read years ago by the French biographer André Maurois . I am not sure whether the original was in French or in English.

martha ludd actually Messianic Judaism is a Jewish expression of Christianity, like what you read about in Acts 21.
@marthaludd1420
@marthaludd1420 7 лет назад
MCS: My understanding is that being a Messianic Jew is theoretically holding the same beliefs as a Christian, but being ethnically jewish. I say "theoretically" because many who call themselves christian have moved off to a kind of christianity which has been twisted into a Greek mould and which denies the importance of Israel and the Jewish people. Hence historical and even present-day unbiblical antisemitism in some church teaching.

No, he would have described himself as First Lord of the Treasury and Prime Minister (if he had used that term) of her Britannic Majesty's United KIngdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Paul is right. To be frank no PM/First Lord of the Treasury since the act of union would have freely described the nation as England only, the response would have been too big to deal with. Why would Enlightenment-era European powers have been more concerned with keeping Jews in, than they were with keeping them out? Were there legitimate reasons for this, or was it purely in the interest of rabbis who were losing their grip on the Jewish folk (as Enlightenment ideas started trickling in to such quarters) and rewarding non-Jewish enforcers for punishing escapees?

9.14 If Isaac was so proud of his ("Sephardic") ancestry then why did he not tell his children all about it? The lack of knowledge in that family as so `eloquently` demonstrated by Benjamins fantasizing about the Queen of Sheba, Constantinople and all the other rubbish he came up with, was spectacular, and is a never ending source of frustration for someone like me as a continuation of that line. 9.30 1748 10.32 The source of Isaacs `wealth` was for the most part his maternal Grandmother who cut out her 2 remaining children for "failing in their filial duties". Benjamin senior left £30,000, but he had 2 children and 4 grandchildren. 19.38 Isaac was 38 when Benjamin was born. He married once. 21.30 The issue was whether Bevis Marks / synagogues in general should modernise their traditions or stick to outmoded, and by then irrelevant traditions, as Isaac and others saw them. He was a moderniser. He got fed up. That is why he left. Likewise his brother in law by marriage, Ephraim Lindo. Conversely David Abarbanel Lindo, Ephraims brother, was a dyed in the wool traditionalist leading to much friction.

Enjoyed the video -- there's an excellent documentary by the BBC on the Gladstone vs D'israeli rivalry. On your comments regarding how Shakespeare came up with the details of Shylock -- recall Shakespeare's own father was a wool merchant. Many claim he was of Marrano / Italian extract. He certainly had dealings with many a Jewish-Italian dealer. Shakespeare himself went to Italy with his (possibly marrano) father. Wooltrade was a thoroughly jewish affair.

Disraeli was brave to be the first Jewish converted Prime Minister; but without faith he had to compensate by being more British Empire imperialist then the anti-Semitic establishment who never trusted or appreciate his ancestors or the Torah from the beginning. 9.02 There is no definitive proof that the main line of the family was Sephardic. Records go back only as far as Cento, namely Isaac Israeli and Enrichetta De Rossi about whom nothing but their names are known. On Isaacs Mothers` side you have Isaac Shiprut and possibly more importantly Esher de Gabay Villa Real which suggests an Iberian connection, but still no proof. The only Sephardic certainty in the family arrives from an odd angle and late in the day, namely from the Lindo family. Benjamins Mother was Maria Basevi (Basevi records like Disraeli start in Italy). Her sister Sarah married Ephraim Lindo. One of their daughters, Olivia, married Charles Trevor (non jew) and they had 11 children, the 6th of which was Katherine, who in turn married Ralph, one of Benjamins` siblings. The Lindos were without doubt of Iberian origin so only Ralphs wife and children, of which there were 4 can be certain to have Sephardic origins. The Disraeli name also died out at the end of this generation with youngest daughter Marguerite in 1967.

Disraeli would have introduced himself as the Prime Minister of England. It has been a political reality for more than a 1000 years that England has been the dominant power within the British Isles. To this day Southerners will refer to the whole of the country as being England or belonging to England. It is only the Scots, Irish, and Welsh, that would call themselves British.

Connor Mork Disraeli was a British MP who advocated the continued expansion of the British Empire from the House of Commons of Great Britain. There was no English House of Commons or English Empire in his life time. He may well have felt English, but as Prime Minister of Her Britannic Majesty´s government - he represented all the people of the British isles meaning Englishmen,Scotsmen, Welshmen and Irish alike - making him the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Is there a primary source that clearly states, that he has introduced himself as the english Prime Minister ? I sincerly doubt it for the simple reason - he was an incarnated British Imperialist who also risked pissing off the rest of the inhabitants of the British isles if he had done so. As for when we are British or Englishmen , Scotsmen, Welshmen etc. It depends on the context of the situation. In general terms we are all British when facing a foreign antagonist i.e the Yanks ;-). And " Sasanach bastards" and bloodyhaggis breath Scots when Mel Gibson sticks his oar in (braveheart) or during football and rugby matches between the countries that make up the U.K..
