Benjamin Trail NP XL vs. Trail NP: Review / Comparison

I review the Benjamin Trail NP XL 1100 .22 and the Benjamin Trail NP .177. I'm not attempting to draw a conclusion as to which is better as they both have their proper place. What I am attempting to do is supply the viewer with enough information to make an informed decision as to which one may be best suited to your needs. The XL may be a more serious hunting rifle, while the NP maybe better suited to plinking. Please don't misunderstand, you can use the XL for plinking (I do), and the NP for hunting (my son does, it just requires more precise pellet placement).
************** If I could choose only one rifle of all the Benjamin Trail variations, I would choose the Benjamin Trail NP .22 with the all weather stock ( synthetic ). It is the best
all-around, in my opinion. *******************

After sighting in at 60 feet, I could easily cover 5 shots with a nickel ru-vid.comUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL ! Truly a pleasure to shoot! Scope was easy to adjust for eye relief. Only problem the varmints must have seen it delivered lol!Update: So impressed with shot groups at 30 yards I purchased a Hammers 3×9 with adjustable Objective scope! Now a true nail driver!
@dmithsmith5880
@dmithsmith5880 9 лет назад
I pulled my entire trigger apart. I ditched the adjustment screw and the disgusting trigger slack spring. I must say I was appalled by the crude machining. So I cut 3/32 off of the sear lap and polished it. I squared the disconnect then matched it to the sear and polished it also..I then cut the bottom of the sear stop where it rests on the trigger pivot down gradually until there was zero back lash on the trigger. I had to peen the center of the safety trigger inward where it makes contact with the trigger to tighten up the tolerance because the slack was more then my sear travel making the safety not safe. Then I decked the sides of the trigger to allow clearance for s.s. shim washers so it has zero side to side play...Let me say this..Not even the same rifle.. Smooooth as silk, breaks like glass. Its running about 3 lbs and 3/16 travel. I removed the scope and whacked the butt with a rubber mallet a bunch of times to test for creep, solid as a rock..

Great job in your presentation! I have an NP and I am on the verge of selling (after owning it for over three years) to up grade to something with a little more power but with the same characteristics as my NP. The XL seems like a good choice but, I'm also contemplating getting the Hatsan 125 vortex. What are your thoughts on that? Thanks for sharing👍

Very nice unbiased review of both rifles!! I just bought my first real air rifle(besides the old cheap wmart specials) and it was the Benjamin NP. I chose it based on reviews like these. Didn't know for sure about .177 vs .22 but now glad got .22 since I shoot in basement and it is very quiet

Does anyone know or know how to get the information, will the nitro piston out of the XL interchange with the regular prowler both 22 caliber, My 22 prowler came with the short suppressor on the end of the barrel instead of the full barrel length suppression system they are using on the newer/theguns in this video

I am 13 and pretty large so I can choose whichever gun. But i happen to live on a dairy so I need to kill a fair share of pests. If I was to shoot pigeons, large crows, and ground hogs, which would be a better rifle?? And also would you advise to get a different scope for say a hundred or 150 yard shot?

wow , i had no idea it would be that strong ! i guess that is why the spring compressor is so important on magnum spring guns , you could get seriously hurt! something i noticed on the replacement piston is that the rod is not perfectly parallel with the tube , hope this is not a problem either ... thanks for the help =)

Just a question about these rifles but I'd assume it's close to the same for all rifles. How much do you have to worry about bullet, or should i say pellet drop? how far will it drop in 30 yards? I'm referring to the .22 but if you know about it for the .177 im interested in that too

They got a lot of use for about 4 - 5 years (many thousands of shots), and they held up just fine. Nothing wrong with either of them today, but they probably haven't been used in 3 or 4 years. We simply moved on to centerfire rifle and pistol's. Cheers

No. Both of mine will hold a 1.5 inch group at 20 yards. Are you familiar with the "artillery hold"? If not, there are two links in the description, go check it out. Are your mounting screws tight (snug, don't overdo it)? My XL started shooting a radically once, I found loose screws on the scope mount. You have to find the right pellet for your gun (one that your gun likes). Start simple with Crossman premier domes. They work well out of both of my pellet guns. Good Luck! Cheers
@stanfordcoffee
@stanfordcoffee 11 лет назад
If your referring to Crosman Silicone Chamber Oil than yes. It's my understanding that Crosman Silicone Chamber Oil and RMCoil is the same thing. I only put two drops on the back side of the piston every 500 rounds or so. I don't put any in the chamber as Crosman advises, I don't want to have my guns diesel at all. I use a drop of 3-in-1 oil at all the hinged areas. After looking at forums, I believe that this is whats best for me. If you fine a good substitute for RMCoil let me know. Cheers

Didn't mean to offend you. It's just that most people won't know to get the heavier pellet to keep them subsonic, and will therefore be disappointed with the performance. Do you have a specific pellet recommendation to help other viewers (one that delivers a fair level of accuracy)? Thanks, Cheers

I don't know about the non-parallel rod, perhaps you could write / call Crosman to get a clarification - good luck. Also, the numbers I gave are just wild guesses. The only thing I know for certain is that you have a huge mechanical advantage in the design of the gun. I tried to cock my gun by grabbing the barrel down by the stock and was unable to move it at all, not even a little. Cheers

No problems here either. A lot of what we shoot are steel targets (swinging flip disks, knock down animals), or just steel plates. I do have to move the plates around, otherwise the pellet splatter cuts a line in the grass. :)

I have the Big Cat, and it is really finnicky on hold. Moving your palm down the barrel 2 inches would change the POI by an inch at 25yds. Once you get the hold, it's pretty accurate, and pellet weight and size make a big difference to groups. Also, replace the trigger with the GRT3. Mine likes Kodiak heavies, and crosman hollowpoints for plinking.

Great sound quality on your video! However, as far as the Trail NP goes, it DOES NOT come with a shoulder-sling and this has been an issue for a year or so. Crosman keeps coming up with excuses, but nothing is happening.

@chevota400
@chevota400 10 лет назад
Fyi, you can get a .22 barrel for the Trail for about $20 delivered. Speaking of parts, that AW stock is really heavy, the wood version is substantially lighter which the kid might like. I read your trigger mod left you with a very sensitive trigger, I can explain how to fix that if you're interested. The guns are also known to break scopes, but with a proper tune that can be greatly reduced. By proper I don't mean sending out, but a simple home tune that goes a few steps further than typical home tunes. Brings power and accuracy up, reduces cocking effort, noise, and hold sensitivity, extends gun and scope life.
@stanfordcoffee
@stanfordcoffee 10 лет назад
Thanks for the tip on the .22 barrel. I'm going to keep my sons a .177 (for now), it shoots very flat that way, almost identical to my XL. I redid both the triggers, they're perfect. I like wood and steel guns, but I'm not a fan of the XL's wood (poorly finished). My son is now 14, 5'10" 140 lbs, he doesn't have any problem with the weight, or cocking effort. Both rifles are still in very good shape, no problems whatsoever. Thanks for the post. Cheers

I don't have the .177 but the lesser powerful NP .22 is very accurate and especially with the pistol grip this is a great gun. Easy to cock and easily manageable. Very accurate with 14.66 H and N pellets to 100 yards. But the factory trigger is crap. But once you fix it with a washer it shoots like a dream. I didn't buy the XL version because with the crappy trigger and the hefty price it wasn't worth it.

Hello, Great video. I am still debating between the NP and the XL. I am looking for one to kill mainly raccoons but I would like to be able to get other things too. I am not looking for too much distance, probably no more then 25-30 yards I will be shooting from. I like the XL a lot but unfortunately can not locate it for as good as price you found it at but if you think it will be the only one to do the job I want I am willing to pay out. Would you recommend the XL or NP?
@stanfordcoffee
@stanfordcoffee 10 лет назад
Thanks. The NP .22 is capable of dispatching a raccoon, but you have to have good pellet placement. The XL 1100 hits much, much harder, much better chance of one shot, one kill. If you after anything bigger, I definitely go with the XL 1100 (stay away from the XL 1500). Try FedTacticalDirect(dot)com (I got my NP from there). NP$180, XL $250 (it's the best I've found after a short search - you may find a better price if you look around a little longer). Cheers

Good looking guns. Wish they were made in USA. You take a look at the Benjamin NPS and Phantom. The NPS is powerful, accurate and ergonomic but is made in USA. There is also the new model Phantom that is very very affordable, accurate and hits hard for small game hunting.

I think at one time the NPS "might" have been made in the US, but they aren't now. The Phantom is certainly china, and the current NPS and new NP2 are classic china stuff. They claim assembled in the US on some guns, but I imagine that's just bolting the stock on, or maybe just boxing it up. I imagine Diana is similar with their made in Germany claim. If either are actually made in their respective countries, specifically the barrel which is the most important part, then they should be ashamed.

chev rolet No the current Benjamin NPS is made in USA the same way the old Crosman/Remington NPSS were made in USA, they are literally the same gun. Also the new Phantom model CS177A is made in USA now. Chip hunnicutt from Crosman himself stated that the guns are made in their bloomfield factory on the Gateway to airguns forum.

luis lima They may suggest that, but I don't believe it. I've seen "assembled" (not made) in the US, and made in the US (with foreign parts), but I have yet to see a break barrel from Crosman that is US quality. I have two of the NPS style guns and while some of the machining appears to have been done on a different machine, the quality is just as bad or worse. Imo they're either made and assembled in china, or made and partially assembled there, then Crosman maybe bolts the stock on and claims "Assembled in the USA". If Crosman did the mfg or assembly then shame on them! Nobody can say for sure who made/did what because Crosman is not truthful. If my two NPS guns are made in the US, then I would have to ask how they manage to make the bore/rifling just as bad as the chinese. The bore is a mystery to me because I can't understand how on earth they can make it so poorly. All I can envision is a chinese guy with a piece of flat stock, hammering it by hand around a rod, and stopping before the job is done. It seems to me they have to make a special effort to make it so poorly, or it is done by hand as I described. RWS is not much better btw, and I assume their barrels are chinese too. I can't imagine Crosman is capable of making such a barrel, even if they tried, so imo it's Chinese. The trigger assy appears US made. The receiver tube is identical quality as the Chinese stuff, and with the same flaws. So I find it hard to believe one was made in china, the other the US, yet almost identical in their flaws. Actually the NPS has a couple extra flaws the normal Trails do not, so the Trail is actually better made than the NPS.

I doubt it. The newer more expensive Benjamin NP2 is clearly marked ASSEMBLED in USA with foreign components. The NPS/S and Phantom are clearly marked MADE in USA with some foreign components, implying that the majority of the components are made domestically in the US as per Chip Hunnicutt.

what kind of pellets do you recommend for the 22cal.
@stanfordcoffee
@stanfordcoffee 10 лет назад
I've had a fair amount of success with JSB Match DIABOLO - EXACT JUMBO DIABOLO 15.89gr. But mostly I shoot the Crossman premier domes, and hollow points. The Crossman pallets seem to work as well as anything else I've found, I can get them locally, And they're cheap. Please watch the review from Ted's holdover: Benjamin Trail NP .22 Accuracy Review I agree with his accuracy findings and most everything else in the video. Cheers
