This song isn’t about a younger girl and older guy. It came out in 1980. There is an interview with Benny Mardones before his death explaining how the song came about. It really is totally innocent.

Benny wrote it after a friend of his said something how about how hot his Babysitter was. He told him she’s only 16 years old and leave her alone. What an amazing Voice he had. R.I.P Benny!

This music Video was made way after it was written. So yeah it looks a bit bad but if you watch the interview he had with Professor of Rock ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EyABE-qjIbI.html You will understand the story behind the lyrics much better. He was actually trying to help a neighbor who's dad left her and siblings plus their mother and he took them in and helped them out.

Video Sucks…old video but the BEST SONG EVER and such a talented guy. The song was actually about his neighbor girl that he paid to walk his dog because her dad left the whole family with nothing. He gave every kid in the family little chores so he could give them money. The 16 year old girl came in to walk Bennys dog before school after he and his Buddy had been up all night trying to write a song to a rhythm they already had which is the beginning. The buddy commented on the girl and Benny said “hey, she’s just 16 years old leave her alone” so I don’t know why they made this perv video. Benny Mardones could sing like NO OTHER!!! He passed a couple years ago with Parkinson’s but continued to raise money for different charities. He was a Patriot and a good man. He was 73 when he passed. 😢

Part #2 And told the kids he would help in tears...didnt know how he could help, but let the boy go get grocerys each day for $20 and keep the change 4 smokes & milk. The girls walked his basset hound for $50 per week. The Mom was very happy. Later when the song became a hit, he was a N.Y raidio show telling that story, The DJ asked," Common man?, is she real?" Benny said," Yeah man, the kids live in my Bldg.!" The DJ said", can she come down to the radio station and conferm?" Heidi showed up & ..part 2# end ubove for part 3#

Part #3 A listener, a rich relastate dude that put up resorts in Puerto Rico called and wanted to meet them just to help out, met Heidi & the 👪 family. And Hedi(age 21 at THAT time) fell in love with the realistate dude. Got married to him, became wealthy, her brother worked 4 Hiedis husband and lived in Puerto Rico well taken care of!! I shared cause I didnt know, as controversial & taboo love as it was, they kept the lyrics!! The end! Peace & love Kenny!! Love ur show!! ✌☺💕 🎵

any song that mention a teenage girl's age nowadays is consider problematic these days. I mean, there been dozen of song back in the 60's 70's and 80's that had either a song title or a in song lyric that make reference to a teenage girl's age. mostly high school age like 16 and 17.

😅😅 I’m so confused by how many people have a defensive take on this song or say that the video isn’t reflective of the song’s actual wholesome meaning 😂. As a little kid in the eighties I found it a little alarming because it implyed that one adult was being blocked by other adults from dating a teen but he’d kidnap her if he could. A million years later, I search the video and that’s more or less exactly the storyline. Except I pictured a waaaaay younger , cute, black dude about 20 years old. Not this coked out , terrifying, peeping Tom Ghoul! The worst part is how addictive the damn song is. The ghoul got pipes.

I always knew he was, um, interesting looking. I was sixteen when this came out, and l was head over heels for an older man…but he would never have gone there. He was a gentleman. So was Benny, but the video is DIFFICULT. I think we were ALL way more innocent back then. We see things very differently through modern eyes and ears. My parents would have killed him😂…but it was such a fantasy love song, every girl l knew melted at it. Edit…I’d love to see your face reading “My Sharona’s” lyrics! They hid THAT behind a snappy beat😂

Ok This is a FANTASTIC song HOWEVER I do understand how that 1st damn line about 16yrs old throws people off BUT here is the REAL story about the song STRAIGHT from Benny Mardones in an interview he did with the Professor of Rock just a few months or years before he die. The song was based on a real life incident. Benny lived in an Apartment I think in Florida and his UPSTAIRS neighbors were going through some hard times because I think the Dad had left the family with no money.The girl is the upstairs neighbor who he decided to look after by employing her to walk his dog everyday before school so she could earn some pocket money. He never dated or had some relations with the girl.😀

The song isn't about him dating the girl. The girl had a sister 17 and brother 13 and her 16 their dad ran off from the family with a 24 year old. The kids showed up at his door crying told him what happened he told them everything would be alright. He didn't know how he would make it better so Benny paid each kid to come by and do chores so they would have money for school and stuff. One night after working all night the 16 year old entered his apartment to walk his dog which was her chore she noticed Benny and his friends had been up all night when she was leaving the apartment his friend said something about her being pretty Benny replied hey man she is only 16 leave her alone.

Bennys interview he stated it was about his neighbor had 3 kids 2 girls one 17 one 16 and a 15 years old boy. There father abandoned the kids, up & left w/ a chorus line girl in N.Y after he came into some bigg money. They heard Benny was a famous musician and thought he could help. They came to his door in tbe bldg. They shared. Bennie & his band mate was up ALL NIGHT partying trying 2 put lyrics to that hook in the song and couldnt. When the kids knocked, the 16 year old girl (HEIDI) told Benny what happened. He hugged all 3 kids and...end part 1# see above to finish!

Let me make a few points about this abundantly clear; this song came out in the early 80s, then the video soon after that. Benny Mardones was around his early 30s (33 years old or 34 years old) in that music video. 😉✌

I admit that His video is creepy and He should have made a different one, but if you are concerned about the "she's just 16" lyric, read up on how He came up with the lyrics to this song. It might make some sense to the "pedophile accusers". With that said, how can someone be arrested for being a "pedophile", if they have sex with a 16 yr. old, if 16 is the age of consent?..I think it should be 18 everywhere, but you have to be consistent with the law, for it to BE a law.
