The late French-American mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot (1924-2010) discovered his ability to think about mathematics in images while working with the French Resistance, and is famous for his work on fractal geometry, the maths of the shapes found in nature. [Listeners: Bernard Sapoval and Daniel Zajdenweber; date recorded:1998]
TRANSCRIPT: I would like to emphasize that my work in finance and economics is not meant to be simply an exercise in abstract science or in model making for themselves. I hope and expect that the use of the fractal models in finance will expand, and that they will contribute to understanding of many of the basic phenomena of our society to further extend than previous models had allowed to be.
