How has Benromach's profile changed over the years? We review Benromach Cast Strength Batch 1 (2001) vs Vintage 2012 Batch 2. The Whisky Rant Podcast Ep 62
Another great Rant vid guys. Please, don't even think about cancelling this format. It's fab and a real treat to watch. My first Benromach was the 2010 batch 1 CS and it blew my mind how amazing it was. Became a flag waving Benromach fan boy on the first dram. Like Mortlach 12, I actually like that the 43 percent on the core range. It makes it more affordable, zero effort on figuring out how much water to add and it hits top marks for reachability.
I like the idea of a Whisky Rant podcast. I go back and forth giving either of you likes and views. I would also support you financially if there was a Rant channel. You guys are much better together than separately.
Great discussion, thank you both very much! I had my first taste of Benromach in 2015/2016 with their 10 YO "Imperial Proof" (fore-runner to the current vintage CS Benromach). I thought it was awesome and immediately bought 2 bottles. I'm currently down to the last couple of pours of my 2nd bottle and loving it thoroughly. I hope to soon find the CS and Contrasts series here in Texas or through friends elsewhere as needed.
Benromach discovery bottle was KWM 2007 13yr bourbon cask. I didn’t love it and didn’t hate it but just kept coming back because like you said it stands out. I still think of that bottle…
I'm now up to 6 different versions of Benromach and my favourite is probably the 18 year old 1st fill Bourbon KWM Cask. On the subject of a Whisky Rant channel, I think it's a good idea. All views, comments and messaging could be done through the one channel instead of splitting it between the two channels. Just my 2 cents. Great rant as always, big assist to James with that dusty!
I think a dedicated channel to the podcast would be a good idea, I’d certainly be on board. Just a suggestion for a potential, future discussion/experiment: You guys says you shouldn’t buy whisky based on color, and whilst I agree in some part I think if you’re a Sherry head, and/or at least know a bit about whisky, you know the difference between swill and good whisky. I’d argue that for sherried whisky especially I’ve tended to have more enjoyable experiences with darker colored liquid. I wonder if it’s something you guys could maybe test? Get a bunch of sherried whisky, of various shades, and see if a darker color does give an indication of quality? The way I see it we, as consumers, have little to go off when buying whisky - color is one of the few indicators that could aid in purchasing decisions so could be worth the investigation. Great podcast again, very enjoyable watch. Picked up a 14yr Benromach Cask Strength bottled in 2014 a few weeks ago, very delicious!
Sadly, I haven’t gotten my hands on a Benromach CS yet, but their 10 & 15 have become part of the permashelf on flavor & outstanding value. I did pick up an 11 year Single Cask 58.7% that’s 1st fill Bourbon. Good stuff. I’m sorry I didn’t grab a backup. Enjoying the “rants”. Cheers.
Springbank and Benromach have been a couple of my favorite distilleries since around ‘07. I’m loving the Benromach 10 and 15 and hope they never go away. The 10 is one of the finest examples I’ve come across of balancing bourbon and sherry maturation with the prefect amount of peat. Wonderful burnt barley sugar note on both expressions.
Great job guys! I got into Benromach with the old 2008 CS. The core range 10 although anemic at 43% was so good, I had to get myself both Contract Peat smoke offerings especially after watching your reviews of them Rob. They have been fantastic bottles. G&M is doing the right thing with Benromach and multiple series offerings within the brand. Cheers!
Gordon and Macphail are ceasing their independent bottle operations so me thinks Benromach quality is gonna increase. Ive only had the Triple Distilled 8 year old 50% abv BenRomach and it was enjoyable. Made me think how a lightly peated Auchentoshan might taste.
My first benromach was the cask strength 2022 bought on your recommendation. I tried the 10,15 and the 21 at £130 but didn't want to spend as much as £130.
I really like these episodes. I think Benromach produces the best official cask strength bottlings out there. If they would bump up their core range stuff, they would be the best overall distillery in Scotland. Of course, that is just my opinion. I’m a bit surprised you didn’t pull out the recent bourbon cask strength bottling to compare to that historic one.
Excellent pod cast guys. Benromach are putting out good quality whisky and at good prices and their 15 is rather nice (to say the least) isn’t it. Slàinte
Late to the party but since I'm just now fully listening to many of these rants, might as well comment. The CS-series is great, fully agreed there. I don't consider myself a "46%-geek", but did find my recently bought Benromach 15yo to be slightly underpowered, despite generally being a yammy whisky. That sherry matured peated bottle looks invating, though.
in my experience Springbank and Benromach are not even in the same ball park in any way shape or form. Completely and utterly different whiskies. Springbank is vastly superior, and Benromach is just .. soapy. That said, Benromach is very distinct whisky, and I can tell it a mile away. Not sure why everyone has just decided Benromach is the SP alternative. In a blind .. people would ironically .. see things clearer.
@@WhiskyInThe6 Always grab an extra (*cough* or two) of every new available Cask Strength release to go straight to the stash. Unbelievable quality and very affordable.
13:17 The best Glendronach I've ever had was the 21 parliament. It actually is incredibly similar to springbank 15, only SP15 has a bit of smoke in the back. Still, the parliament 21 is a top notch single malt.
Teachhh ! . . . kindly keep ALL your options open, unless costs become an issue: RANT, Whisky 6, . . . RANT may only go so far... just my opi... did u hear G&M will stop buying stuff from other distilleries, to focus on Bnero + their own distil ?
Hey guys, I notice in your rant pod casks (which I enjoy) you often bring up the secondary market. I have a question, I'm hearing a lot about a whisky called Bowmore 21 Aston Martin. I read a comment thread that these whiskies could be worth over $50,000 one day like the black Bowmore series. What's your thoughts on that? is it likely? I can't seem to find the 21 but I can still grab the 22, and much like the black Bowmore series, even the 2nd and 3rd and 4th became worth a fortune. Note, I am not a collector or investor, but it is interesting if I can grab such a bottle! Thanks
Rob, please listen to me, you're at risk for throat cancer. I can tell by the way you talk. Whisky drinkers are at risk for head and neck cancers, especially if they smoke. Please keep this in mind.
