The PT2399 delay chip is the kind of digital delay chip that, when used properly, creates an experience where I completely forget that I'm not dealing with a true analog delay. The Benson Delay stretches this classic delay chip well beyond it's listed limitations into dusty, nostalgic corners of sound design and calls forth the spirits of progressively angrier ghosts as you fine tune just how much self oscillation you want. In short, the Benson Delay is wonderful, warm, and well balanced.

Awesome work as usual, wicked intro track as well. I swear if I need a step by step lesson on how to use/get everything out of a pedal your videos are the way to go. Super in depth, articulate, and knowledgable. Appreciate the time you give. Hope you and your family are doing good.

I believe it's a '93 360/12. I've had it for over a decade now and I really need to be playing it way more often that I do. Its such a great instrument

I appreciate your depth, attention to detail and knowledge on this pedal! It's definitley my next pedal purchase for my live and session work! I also fell in love with my Benson Monarch Reverb+ amp! Chris Benson is a damn genius! Thaks for the video Mark, I've subscribed and look forward to more of your videos! Cheers!

"I feel like we've arrived at a very fascinating spot in the industry where things are less about breaking new ground most of the time, and instead refining and executing on really specific visions of existing ideas." This is a great point, and I love that we are in this era. I love seeing unique approaches with the highest quality execution. I see Benson Amps, Bondi Effects, Asheville Music Tools, EAE, MAE, Black Mass Electronics, and several others are championing these philosophies. Thanks for showcasing this pedal, these videos look like a lot of work.

I went through that feature-driven-arms-race with everyone over the last 5-7 years. Lots of huge swings and “does it all” gear but as my boards have shrunk and my preferences have refocused on core sounds vs features I found that my writing and production has gotten much better. This is a better way imo. A plethora of visions instead of just one thing that does it all mostly well.
@bw5260

@bw5260

@@markjohnstonofficial But I do believe that one-thing-does-it-all-mostly-well evolution of pedals was crucial for me, because it was pedals like the Alexander Leap Series that helped me determine which flavor of delay/reverb/etc. that I like and use most. It's always nice to have them around, but now I know that I just spend 95% of my time on a dark/analog/BBD style delay (so it led me to AMT ADG-1) and varying intensity of cavernous/ambient/hall reverb (Neunaber Wet), so I never used those "does it all" pedals to their full potential.

Respectfully - what the actual fuck man! the random LFO section at 31 mins is one of THE nicest delay sounds I’ve ever heard dialed in! What a rad demo for an equally rad pedal.

It's really cool to see a delay like this that can do so many cool sounds but not have any menu diving, dozen's of algorithms, and tons of parameters to edit.
@chrija03

Love your videos and love Benson! Do you get latency when using the pedal as a MOD effect with FB and TIME on 0 and MIX at 100, since you’re essentially hearing the first delay tone, rather than the source signal? If Benson made it so setting things this way makes it similar to how like a vibrato or chorus pedal would work, then I need one immediately…probably need one either way, TBH.

Interesting to see the resurgence of pt2399 delays. Seems like it was poison for a bit there to come out with "another one". now if someone made something like an MF-104M with a couple, and maybe tap tempo and 8 different modulated waveforms... well anyway, back to unrelated breadboarding.

You did not just call this a proper analog delay ma man. It's pt2399 you must know the similarities and differences. The man himself on his story video discusses the move from bbd to karaoke chip. I love that it behaves so much like analog but I think the true bucket brigade device designs earn that moniker
