Bentley Walker Tooway Self Install Satellite Internet (without the instructions)

Up on the West coast of Scotland the Internet coverage is patchy to say the least. I was up visiting my parents recently and the first job they had for me when I arrived was the installation of a Bentley Walker Tooway self-install Satellite Broadband system for them. Things were tougher than they should have been as we couldn't access the CD-Rom containing the instructions or plug the network cable into our shiny new laptops which were both wifi-only, but with a bit of cleverness we managed to get everything up and working without needing the instructions.

Forgive my lack of knowledge on such things, but do you pay for the satellite signal? Does the satellite dish connect to the router which then sends out a wireless signal? Sorry, but I'm a newbie trying to get better signal for my folks who live in a very rural area Thanks!

How long will it take to get company to start providing usb drives that have instruction on them? About the time usb move on to Usb 3.1 type C or aka gen 2 lol. New issue :) That is a great video :) Sorry for my rant. Thanks for sharing :)

I had that system many moons ago, was slow in the day from day when, then as more people got the service, it became painfully slow and stopped working at all in the evenings!!!

Hi Julian - The peak maximum speeds are much better than I was getting i n this video. The system peaks at 22mbit down and 6mbit up, but it's contended between lots of customers... particularly at the moment with all the kids starting thier summer holidays and heading off to the remote parts of Scotland with their tablets.. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers!!

The test must be done with a direct connection from the computer to the router, no one at home connected via wi-fi at that moment, and with a dedicated programa (not regular adsl or fiber tests)

Good job, Jim! Do you still have to pay for an ISP?
@ThingsWhichArentWork
@ThingsWhichArentWork 8 лет назад
Thanks Keith - Yes, unfortunately you have to pay monthly for the satellite service, and the charges are much higher than regular broadband suppliers... but then again, the system relies on having satellites launched into space, so not too surprising that it costs more than a copper pair buried under the road. Cheers!!

Why not done a much cheaper solution by installing a 3G yagi antenna towards your nearest 3G cell tower with a signal booster amp and getting much more bandwidth? The clue over there would've been the separation of the indoor and outdoor antennas by height. 🌐
@ThingsWhichArentWork
@ThingsWhichArentWork 3 года назад
Back when this was installed my folks couldn't even get a 3G signal to the phone mast as there was no line of sight. About a year ago a new cell tower got built and now they've ditched the satellite setup and are using 4G via mobile instead.

@@ThingsWhichArentWork just want to ask you both a big question ,At this moment in Ireland our government has signed off on a €3billion deal for rural brodband ,people here arnt very happy for various reasons , I live in rural Ireland and have a dongle from Vodafone ,just did a speed test by one of those tester sites(dont know if the are reliable) it says 4, download 3,5 upload , on average ,,,, Im happy with this, can watch youtube no bother ,thats my benchmark ,,,, your system looks like it performs even better ,,,,, Can this do that job of total rural connection ,give or take

@ThingsWhichArentWork 5 лет назад
Hi @@melmcintyre3211 - The system was for my parents chalet on the west coast of Scotland. As I wan't the end user I can't give you exact speed details. What I can tell you though was that once the system was up and working, it gave very much the same experience as an ADSL connection. It's been a couple of years since I made this video, so the upload/download speeds may have improved since then. I vaguely recall that we were getting around 20mbps download, but the Bentley Walker website says it supports up to 50mbps.. bentley-walker.com/tooway-1 ... Hope that helps. Cheers!!!

Thanks John.... I'm not too amazed by the downlink these days (satellite TV has been around for ages), but the fact that the same dish can send bytes back up to the satellite in space amazes me. Cheers!!

Hi, it means that you getting Internet brodban for free or is just boosting the signl. Thanks
@ThingsWhichArentWork
@ThingsWhichArentWork 8 лет назад
Hi Tom - My parents live so far from the phone exchange that they can't get ADSL at all... there's no cable TV service where they live, so cable-modem is not an option either, and the mobile phone signal is so bad that it's totally unusable for a data connection... The satellite broadband setup costs £29/month capped for 10GB download and 1GB upload, or £100/month for an uncapped service... Rather expensive for a broadband connection, but when there's no other choices it's the only way to get connected. If you live near civilization then every other internet option would be cheaper/better, but when you live as far away from any form of infrastructure as they do, there aren't really any other options. I still find it quite amazing that it's possible to transmit from that dish up into space for the upstream connection to the satellites flyingup there. Cheers!!

I have question I researching more info on Led light and I seen yor video with 12v and 100w led chip my interest is if I get stronger booster DC like 1200w with 10-80V and 20mA, ADJUSTABLE output (V) and ADJUSTABLE current (mA) it is possible to get going 2× 200w led chip this is the specific for the LED CHIP Current:4900mA Voltage:40-45V Thanks I hope you can help me with this. .
@ThingsWhichArentWork
@ThingsWhichArentWork 8 лет назад
Hi Tom - Yes, the 1200W boost converter models have an input up to 20A, which at 12V will allow you to pull up to 240W of power out. Enough for a single 200W LED, but not for two of them. For that you'll need to use a higher input voltage on the boost converter... For a 400W load, you'll need an input voltage of at least 24V into the converter (at 20A this would allow up to 480W of power to be pulled from the supply)... Assuming 80% converter efficiency this would give you up to 384W delivered to the LEDs.. (so actually a bit more than 24V is needed). Hope that helps. Cheers!!

@@burtybasset4486 It was a few years ago now and my parents now have a strong 4G signal so are using that instead. I recall the prices were at the time were about twice what I was paying for regular broadband over copper. There were data caps and charges though... Can't remember exactly but I think it was about 30GB/month they were on at the time. Not the kind of thing you'd want to spend all day watching youtube videos on, but it was OK for them at the time.
