@Boris-g5q No, that was Beowulf the TRUE hero being born in that scene. Throught the whole movie, his resume was highly suspect and this was the moment he chose to shed the lies that he led everyone believe.

@Boris-g5q He objectively lied, it was shown in the movie. During his story about the swimming race, he wasn't dragged under by a "monster" he was seduced by a siren. He never killed Grendel's mother as he said he did, he sired a pure blooded dragon with her that came back to burn his kingdom down. He built his kingdom on those lies. His guilt and shame came from the fact everyone around him practically worshipped him for lies he constructed, save for his queen who knew the truth. "Was she truly that beautiful?" was her question to him, to which his response was "And full of many promises".

@Boris-g5q He wasn't "spiritually" complete, his lies ate at the core of who he was, just as the original quote conveys. He lied to puff himself up in the eyes of everyone else. Internally he never felt fulfilled because he knew the truth. A person who is "spiritually complete" lives by truth and has no need to lie about such things. And he wasn't fighting for anyone in the beginning other than himself. He said so with the quote "Mine is strength, lust, and power", not "the weak, helpless people" It was after he became king that his views changed. And never said he was a good or bad man, he was a man who died a hero in the end because he chose to ask to be forgiven for his lie and fought the dragon to save his kingdom and queen instead of for his song. The movie is a classic trope of a heroes journey from a brash arrogant youth to a wise humble hero.

@Boris-g5q That's what being a hero means. Why you do something is just as important. Anyone can be brave for enough incentive, but only a hero can be brave when there is little to none to be gained. He knew he would probably die fighting the dragon, but he chose to continue. His queen even said about his mistress "she's young you could take her and live out your days in peace. Let a younger hero solve the problem" but he chose to stay and fight so as "not to repeat the same mistake"
