Berhanu's Life-Saving Spine Surgery at CHLA

Berhanu was an 8-year old orphan living in a rural village in Ethiopia.
Suffering from severe scoliosis, Berhanu had no access to sufficient healthcare until arriving at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
Mending Kids International brought the young man to a host family in the United State, to care for him during his visit to receive life-saving medical treatment.
His life-threatening scoliosis-a particularly serious case-required two surgeries. In addition, Berhanu exhibited a heart murmur, deafness in one ear and a deformed right hand.
Advanced techniques used at the Children's Orthopaedic Center meant that Berhanu never needed to have screws put in his skull to straighten his spine, which would normally be the standard of care provided in cases like Berhanu's.
In addition, Berhanu's hand deformity was treated with plastic surgery to give him more function.

OMG! Berhanu is such a sweet angel of a child. I wanted to reach into the screen of my phone and hug him. I wept tears of joy when he came through the three operations. Then I wept tears of sadness when he left his wonderfully loving host parents to return to his home in Ethiopia. God bless Mending Children, the doctors and medical staff and the host parents who showed Berhanu so much love and compassion! ❤️

you know what, doctors are criticized for having such a big salary, but I hope people could see through this video that they deserve every cent. Plus, the salary isn't what makes them rich.... look how he said "Tell him i'll treat him like he was my own son" - That my friends , is TRUE wealth.

I found an article about him. Jim followed him because he wants to adopt the little boy, I could tell that boy knew that he had found his permanet home, jim discovered that he has a biological sister so he is hoping to adopt her as well.

It's awful that Berhandu had to go through this; I mean, traveling all the way to America, the pain, the surgeries, everything that he had to go through; it really sucks

Berhanu dealt so bravely with the tremendous challenges he faced and at such a young age. God blessed him with such a loving family and doctor David Skaggs and miraculous strength to pull through it all

you have to go to college for 4 years then 4 years of med school once your done depending on what you want to become is a extra 6 to 8 years of training.

I hope they adopted both berhanu and his sister, he is a sweet little boy. Jim refuses to see berhanu and his sister be seperated.

@@alexandrawilson1998 I was put into an orphanage centre in Ethiopia so I could go to America and get surgery. I am healthy and happy living in the U.K. I have finished school and university and I am doing well. I am blessed by so many people in my life.

I kicked an oral surgeon out of my home some time ago. Since...workers at Los Angeles Children's Hopsital, and students of Global Institute of Dental Education have been following me, harrassing me, taking part in sleep deprivation campaigns, attacking my reputation, and taking part in criminal activity and hate crimes. If you find yourself at LA Children's Hospital, ask some of the workers about it (particularly the dental wing.)
