Part 3 of my "Berklee Grad" series. In this video I take you through a few exercises that i developed to help increase your foot speed and agility. Any questions are welcome in the comments! Debut Album... www.rainbowblo...

Thank you for leaving the frustrating mistakes in your videos! It is very motivating to know that it’s not so much about natural ability, but how much repetition and practice is required. Keep up the good work!
Man, you’re the soul of 21th century drumming. Such a cool blend of modern vocabulary with creativity and overall nice and chill personality! Love ya❤ p.s lessons are absolutely dope, hits right in the spot of technical problems
this is exactly what i needed. working on the 5th exercise right now, and it’s a fun challenge, particularly where you have to switch from 16ths back to triplets cleanly. thanks a lot for sharing your exercises, jharis! btw, you’re hella fast bro lol
Love it Jharis!n Keep this up, Would love to see some more of these concept breakdowns keeping the groove going while exploring singles, doubles, paradiddles into your playing!
Hey bro! I love your lessons! Could we get a lesson on how you practice your hand control and dynamics? Ive been wanting to know how you control your dynamics in your playing 😭 thnks man!
Thanks so very much for displaying the alteration on the left and right foot or vice versa, and using singles with your hands while incorporating both feet , one at a time, Jharis!!❤❤❤❤
This video was super helpful and I can’t wait to dig into it! For a video idea, it’d be cool to see your approach on improving your ride cymbal technique? I heard Tony Williams used a “drop catch” technique and I’d be curious to see your take on applying this. Thank you in advance
Excellent stuff dude! Been looking to improve my pocket specifically with my kick hits, def think this is gonna help. Thank you! Any other tips for working on pocket?
Maybe I’ll do a video on this but, to me, improving pocket has a lot more to do with playing along to records than a metronome. So I would play along with any music that you think is right in the pocket
@@jharis.yokley Makes a lot of sense! I feel like a lot of time while I'm playing, things feel pretty good but when I listen back to recordings I'm like 🤦🏻♂Gonna go put in some time on the kit, thanks for the reply!
I have a simple question that I hope you will see and find time to answer: How much difference do you find in the pedal type you use? Single/double chain, direct drive, belt? And also, do you have a favorite type of pedal or a favorite specific go-to pedal and for what simple reason. Your time and experience is valuable so thank you for the lesson! 🙏🏿
90% of the time I won’t adjust the pedal that I play on. Over the years I’ve learned ways to be able to play similarly on any pedal 🙏🏿 I don’t think I have a preference when it comes to single/double chain or anything like that
great video, thank you! do you have any advice for playing the doubles specifically? are you sliding into them or just kind of treating them like two singles in a row? that’s something i struggle w for sure. hope for more vids, these are great
Sometimes I slide into the doubles but most times I’m trying to get two ankle strikes for every knee drop. If that makes sense. I haven’t really spent much time on foot technique in general
I appreciate you showing the learning process as well as the application. when you end up in a situation where you're playing a part of one of the exercises in the real world, do you set a boundary saying "don't go there" for the sections that you tend to slip up on? or do you take the risk? I'm guessing you ended up cleaning that section with the 3lets to 16ths after what was shown in the video recording either way.
@@Xolin11 in the real world I almost always take the risk. I feel that even if I mess up, it’s not the end of the world. Also, I’ve learned how to cover up mistakes over the years 🙏🏿
Great video! Do you use the slide technique for fast doubles or just 2 ankle hits with 1 knee drop (same as larnell lewis technique)? If you can do another video about foot technique it would awesome 🔥
Awesome exercises with real musical applications......man your execution at high tempos is impressive. A future video regarding foot technique for high tempo doubles would be really useful. What technique (s) are you using once uou start hitting 140 plus?
V nice JY. How do you find playing different kits backline on tour? Do you travel w your own pedal? Adjust tension/settings of the pedal there? Or just train the foot to do it on anything?
Yo Jharis, I've been following your work and your channel for about a month now. I really hope these videos will be super helpful for me. Do you have any tips for me regarding triple strokes on the single kick (~3 years, self taught)? I can do doubles pretty fast but triples always mess me up and I end up locking up during the 2nd stroke at medium tempos. It just feels like a mental thing since I can do it without thinking sometimes but every other time I try it it just doesn't seem to click.
Growing up, I always used to play along to the song “In The End” by Linkin Park. Playing that kick pattern over and over made my foot faster playing three and four strokes 🙏🏿
There isn’t really an ideal length of time. Once you get the coordination down, just doing it every day for a few minutes while increasing the speed will get the job done
