I installed this on my Native Slayer Propel 13 after the factory wires frayed and snapped. I've got the Boondox rudder. Installed fine (though removing the frayed wire was a nightmare as it had broken off pieces within the sleeve) and it works great. Steering is tight and with the large rudder and longer throw, the boat is now more responsive. Very good upgrade for anyone considering it, and I highly recommend doing it before your wires fray and shed strands in the tubes like mine did.
Hi Bruce. We stick to the knots on the back to keep it easy for adjustment on and off the water with no tools required. Remember there is no bushes or bearings used in these steering parts so you can't pull the cord too tight anyway or it will wear at points on the handle and the rudder
Are the rudder cables lasting any longer? Both my Natives eat cables and the Titan is ridiculous as I have snapped brand new cables in as little as three hours.
This is way easier than the paper instructions!! Also, any thoughts on improved performance using the Boonedox rudder? Going to do a test with the Boonedox, then stock with Berley cable upgrade and a 3rd with both. Will need you cable to move the boonedox enough to fit the stern snug against the bed of the 04 Xtra cab Hilux.
They work great together. Update: Have been using this steering upgrade with a Boonedox aluminum rudder for over a year with 0 problems. The steering upgrade has held up perfectly against the added pressure of the much larger than stock rudder. It now turns quicker than my Hobie Outback.
Greetings, I’d like to know was part of the reason for your upgrade because the rudder was too loose and wobbly initially? Because that seems to be the problem with mine. And does some type of thick white nylon washer supposed to come underneath the standard rudder black disc or the rudder shaft underneath the kayak to keep it from being so wobbly?? Mine did not...which may be why it is so wobbly.
That nylon cord will eventually cut through the plastic sleeve.. I had an idea some what similar a few years back using 50lb Kevlar fishing line and lawn mower style spun cord as the sleeve..the sleeve is the biggest issue..
Hi Charles. I'm 2.5 years with plenty of outings on mine without it rubbing through. More than happy to replace the sleeving for better performance when it comes to it :D
I would say that by design, having the cord always in line with the ports in the kayak, this would reduce rubbing compared to the metal cable that originally runs through, and pulls at the inside of the bung when the rudder is at angles.
Really dumb question. The handle drum disc where the cords are attached. In the vid it looks like they are tied/crimped together at the forward point. The one I ordered, the steering cords are simply tied off with a knot. Do I install as is?
