The hole in the top of the Brandenburg gate was from an abandoned tiger 1 tank less then 200 mtrs away . It was either from a Russian or Germans firing a last shot , putting the gun out of battery
It should be remembered that the war cost the Red Army nearly 9 million dead plus 18 million wounded. Although 4.5 million prisoners were taken by the Germans only 1.8 million returned alive. The civilian dead are much harder to compute but they are reckoned to be nearly 18 million, making the war dead of the Soviet Union 27 million.
I'm rather amazed at the quality of the film--especially when seen in comparison to the grainy, black-and-white newsreels showing the East Germans building the Berlin Wall 16 years later!
@@cullenduval1056 Color film was *much more expensive* than black-and-white film in 1961 when the East Germans built the wall, even moreso at the end of World War II.
I love these films Chronos and Pathe' deliver. No matter the subject during WW2, before and after, I love looking at people's faces. I've always been surprised by the small amount of tragedy I see on German faces. It's there for sure but...anyway, a resilient people.
Yeah, well if you wanted to prosecute them, you should have fought harder. But you didn't. And you lost. So na na na na poo poo, stick your head in doo doo. Oh wait, you didn't have anything to do with it. You weren't even born yet. So you calling anyone a criminal is just based on what you were told or what you read. Which depends a hell of a lot on the source(s) and how really interested and committed you are to getting at the truth of this or any matter. It also matters your predispositions and how open minded you are to opposing positions. Bottom line is, we are all humans. We all do things we are not and should not be proud of. It's the degree to which things are done that is often the difference. Also, as they say... history is written by the victors. This is in no way excusing anything the axis powers did not criminalizing anything the allies did in prosecuting the war on the axis. That's for someone else to do and it's been done a thousand times by far far more intelligent people than me. Hopefully, humanity can look at these times, realize how they came about and be so horrified that they never allow them to happen again. Unfortunately, we're still humans. And we're selective in our thinking or not thinking. Fingers crossed
One thing - I always thought color films didn't come till at least late 50s to early 6os .. ? In Hollywood at least ..? the first colrs came in early 60s ..
It's a statue of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Sadly the statue is gone today. It survived the war but was destroyed by the Soviets in the 1950s as it was seen as a monument to German imperialism. It was a magnificent statue.
I believe this is footage taken from the camera crew of director George Stevens. He is seen driving that jeep. He went on to direct such movies as Giant and The Diary of Anne Frank.
