German here. We have hundreds of really old apple varieties here that the standard varieties that are sold nowadays were bred from. Unfortunately it seems like you mostly got the less interesting ones. For example, Ambrosia is a Canadian variety bred in the 90's. However, Elstar and Boskoop are a bit older, the latter originating in the 1850's. Boskoop is usually used for baking and making juice, though I love them raw :)

there are hundreds of tradional apple varieties in Germany - thought you might find not more than 10 at shopes. I once went to the "Fruitlogistica" international fruit fair which I found very disappointing. On the stalls you could only find the same half a dozen apple varieties - perfectly standardized, all over the fair.

Boscopp apple is what the tree in my family orchard produce. Not bad to eat straight but way better for apple juice (usually that's what we do for the most part of our) or baking. Quite popular here in Switzerland

elstar is really common here in the Netherlands, it's a bit of a staple fruit here! I tend to find them a bit sour. There are some old apple trees in my parents' garden, one is supposed to be a old variety from Groningen, and that one produces HUGE apples. We also have surprisingly red pears sometimes, at one tree. When They do grow, they taste amazing.

Man we had a living apple archive on our campus (horticulture university) in Switzerland with over 100 apple varieties :D you would have loved (or hated xD) it. Sadly it had to be cut down. There is/was also a living plum orchard next to it and there was one with pears they had some 80 each. Fall was always a great time there .D

The second one could be "Reinette du Canada", which despite the name is actually french. I don't like it but it's quite popular. This year I bought a tree of an ancient Italian variety called "Pom Platlin" which is similar looking but flatter and is said to have a nutty/almond taste to the peel. Who tried it, said it's the best Apple they had. I am quite eager to try it.

You obviously visited Germany at the wrong time of the year. Given your outfit, the steam coming from your mouth when breathing, and the state of the trees, I'd guess it was January or February at the coldest time of winter. Would you visit right now, or somewhen between June to September, there would be a bigger variety of fruits available. There is a pretty interesting plant nursery (Deaflora) near Berlin that has an awesome garden with a big variety of interesting fruits. Right now you could get a variety of currents, gooseberries, raspberries, mulberries,...

I recall going to a produce shop in East Berlin, not long before the German reunification. They had some shriveled oranges, a few bruised apples, some wilted cabbages, and a couple of carrots (only one kind of each). That was it. And this was in one of the nicer neighborhoods in the capital city of the German Democratic Republic, the city that was supposed to be the showplace for modern scientific Communism. There you have it folks. That’s why the Berlin Wall fell down. Reagan had less than nothing to do with it. It was all about groceries.

The Ambrosia apples that I buy at Walmart in a bag are my absolute favorite store bought apple ! This apple is not too sweet, not too tart with a floral aftertaste that stays in the mouth for a few minutes. So good! Second favorite are the mountain apples that are sold at the Albuquerque, N.M. flea market in the fall, so crisp, sweet , and appley.

It was probably season (winter) to find special seasonal German fruits. Boskop is traditional German,rather tart variety, often used for juice or apple cake. All the other looked imported (from France?) - no local variety, except the Elstar. One of the most tasty apple varieties in Germany are Gravensteiner (unfortunatly not long shelf life) and Cox Orange (which can get diseases in Central European climate though).
@FreeFireFull
@FreeFireFull 4 года назад
Poland also has some interesting apple varieties. For example the "Papierówka" apple. In general though, it'll be tough to find most apple varieties in stores, you'll have to find someone who actually has a tree.

in this case not true because Boskop apples and many other common apples here in germany are mealy naturally. but those apples were stored for atleast one winter, because of his upload date. boskop is also one of those kinds that can be stored very long time at 5-10°C in a german cellar.

I recently bought two apple trees which produce fairly odd fruits (well, at least in the apple family). One of them is Baya Marisa with a bright red pulp, the other one is called "Appletini" with tiny apples, about the size of a cherry. I never seen those varieties up for sale anywhere.

The apple at 2:40 looks similar to an Egremont Russet, which is quite popular here in the UK. Like Germany and France the UK is blessed with quite a few interesting varieties of apples and pears, but you have to look for them. There's a deli near where I work in London that stocks a handful when they come into season, pleasingly they're labelled with a bit of history and some tasting notes.

In Northern Germany we use these old, more tart apple varieties to contrast sweetness in wintertime dessert dishes like Bratäpfel. I'm quite sure most people only buy them for cooking and baking, not for eating raw. My favorite variety for eating raw is Braeburn (early after harvest). More on the sour side, but not as chemically tasting as for example Granny Smith.

I actually have the "Boskoop" in my garden, it is also known as the "goudreinet" (golden reinette). A typicle apple to make applesauce from. The longer they hang on your tree the sweeter they can become. And the more red they become. That second one btw looks also as a Boskoop. Not a red one (yet). Also have a small Elstar in my garden, the other year I had one small apple on it, and this year already 2 big ones.... :)

Unlied, I have the best apple tree in my garden, sadly I don't know the variety anymore, but I know that it is a very old german variety. They're super crisp, have about a 50/50 ratio of sweet and sour, and with a ton of flavor, but they're a bit smaller in size. They make the best juice ever, and are also tasty on a cake, but I like eating em plain as well. Last year I didn't get a single one because I did cut the tree too much when it was in flower😬 but this year I hope to get a bunch of apples again. A farmer in my small town here has an old apple tree on his land which produces apples that are completely blood red in color, like the ones from the snow white fairy-tale (Schneewittchen). They're also super tasty and don't just look nice. I always wanted to get a stick of that tree and graft it to a wild tree in the hope to get my own tree of that variety, but I didn't manage to do it yet. Hopefully soon.

I get organic apples from my local health food store all the time and during fall/winter, they have all sorts of varieties. That second one that looked like a sort of like an Asian pear really looked like one I have tried called a Royal Russet. The flavor though was much better then what you described though. My favorite apple is called Lady Alice. It almost tastes like a fresh apple pie. It has notes of spice to it, sort of like a tiny bit of cinnamon, clove and allspice maybe but still a good slightly tart fresh apple. If you can find it I definitely recommend trying it.

It has been awhile since I had the Russet but I vaguely remember it being a bit mealy so it was probably stored a bit too long to be perfect. The perfumey taste sounds right for the one I had tried. I will have to keep an eye out for them again next fall/winter and see if I can get a fresher one.

Ambrosia are sold in the supermarkets in Washington, I was like meh. Now Opal is an apple for fresh eating. Cox was an old cultivar and used a lot for breeding into new cox varieties. That softer, not crisp but not mealy, texture is common to many older varieties like McIntosh more of a cultural preference or intended use thing. They grow many cider specific apples, generally in 4 blending classes: sweet(generally also aromatic), Bitter-sweet(adding lots of tannins), sharp(adding lots of acids), and bitter-sharp(adding both tannins and acids). All should have a good sugar level for fermented alcohol content(but also fine tuned by blending), some cultivars will change class depending on where they were grown, maybe bitter-sharp grown in one region and just sharp in another.

I'm from Serbia, and i guess we have a similar situation regarding fruit. But, there are a few of European fruits that he might find interesting (sadly, the time of year is a big factor here, cause they are usually available for a short period): medlar fruit; native cherry plums - they taste very different tree to tree, and colour wise (yellow, red, purple); wild cherries, small and tasty, sour, sweet and bitter all in one; sorb fruit; a lot of grape varieties; and a lot of varieties of common fruit in general, like peaches, pears, apricots, etc, some of which are quite old and closer to wild varieties. Europe is not that poor when it comes to fruit; the trouble is our fruits were transplanted throughout the World in the past centuries so nobody thinks of them as exotic.
@carbonbased7291

"Unique" seems to mean "exotic" in the context of this channel. And since Germany is in the temperate climate zone, like most of North America, there obviously won't be many fruits Western people don't know about.

Lemmy Pop I like Momtmerincy cherries - we have 2 dwarf trees in my yard here in Ohio. They are a sour cherry usually used for cherry pie, but I love them right off the tree too.

You're just assuming what you're used to isn't unique. Here in Costa Rica many of the fruits that Europeans consider normal would be consider exotic. Most people here have never tried a cherry or a peach that wasn't canned. When I lived in Germany there were a lot of produce varieties that you don't get outside of Europe,for example a lot of the apple varieties are maybe a bit "uglier" but more flavorful than what is exported to other countries. Even something as simple as potatoes are far better in Germany. Plus, a lot of heirloom varieties of fruit that taste great but are hard to market because of limited shelf life or unattractive appearance can be found at weekend farmers markets.

@@carbonbased7291 Idk about that. I think the US has excellent fruit diversity, mostly from active breeding efforts to produce new varieties of "basic" species. I feel like every 6 months I can go there and see a new cultivar of orange or apple or berry being sold.

What is the place mentioned at 0:18? The caption lists it as "Kata Way", but I can not find that on Google Maps. I'd love to know a place in Berlin with a wide variety of weird fruit!

the second is most probably a Canada apple, one of my favourites. What kind of apples do you have in North America? Most of the varieties you tasted are quite common here, so I was surprised it was something unusual to you

The third apple is a simple Gala apple from that region in France. That is a brand, not a cultivar. Peace out.

The Korean pear is not an apple and I have had them several times. It is a species of pear.Pyrus pyrifolia is a species of pear tree native to East Asia. The tree's edible fruit is known by many names, including: Asian pear, Chinese pear, Korean pear, Japanese pear, Taiwanese pear.

You could have them write down the name if you have a tiny notebook and pen with you. I find that very useful when I travel. Very strange to me that you would just eat fruit without having washed or peeled them.

Try ,,red love,, apples or if you fan because it hard to find (you have to buy the tree and plant it and your not allowed to sell the fruits,its illegal)you could try the american ( actually invented in Canada) pink pearl apple.They have red flesh not white and they dont get brown when cut if left for somme time in the fridge,because the red pigment its an antioxidant.All red fleshed apples have genes from somme endangered wild apples from kazahstan ,that are less than 100 trees left in the wild.
@WeirdExplorer

Illegal? but why?? I found a pink pearl apple but sadly it wasn't a good one. the inside was mostly white. will have to try it again.

Mihai, I have been trying to find these trees for a long time. Any of them. I am part of a rare fruit grower group in southern Arizona. I dont think they would grow here in my area. Not enough chill hours. But one day I am hoping they can cross it with some low chill hour varieties to get the same fruit in my area. Didnt realize the trees were endangered in their native Stans.
