I miss the Wall. I spent some time in WestBerlin in the mid 80s, and it was i weird and fascinating place and an athmosphere that will never come back. Berlin is now a great city, but there is a lot of great cities, and sorry to say, Berlin is now only great, not wierd and wonderful as it was with the wall.
i was a kid in the 1980s and have great memories of it, only realized about the ussr when it fell, i wasnt living in the east, but it always stayed with me the gritty days of the fall of the ussr and 80s in general
Yes, you have understood correctly. The street where she walks was in fact East-German territory also. They build the wall some meters away, to let people come into their apartements. The streets in the beginning is in East-Berlin, filmed from one of the many ramps build on the west-side to let people look over the wall
so it's like they had given away a small portion of their territory to West Germany since the only people who would have access to that street would be West Germans anyway
I know what you meant, it was awful..recently I visited Berlin, you can still feel the pain being there...you can almost touch it...Lets hope something like this never happens again, we can not let it happen...
There was buildt many towers like this along the wall, simply for the purpose to let curious people look over to the eastern side. btw. there was no watch-towers, border or passenger control on the western side at all, simply because West-Germany never formally accepted the existence of the border between BRD and DDR.
The first scene where the man is looking over the Wall is from an intersection of Bernauer Strasse, Eberswalder Strasse, Oderberger Strasse, and Schwedter Strasse. I think the tram steers away to Eberswalder Strasse direction.
What is that platform for that the guy who screams is getting off of at around 1:30? This is in West Berlin so I wouldn't think it would be a guard tower or anything similar. Thanks for anyone who can help.
@benjathome Transit roads betw West Germany & Berlin were shared by transit traffic & East Germans. Cars in transit were not allowed to turn off, while East Germans had to exit no later than the last turn-off before the border. The only place Western cars could leave was the service stations (also open to East Germans), which were pretty grotty, but interesting cos of the chance to 'mix'. The entrances/exits from the motorways were heavily fortified, and the roads heavily patrolled.
Second scene where the woman is walking. I think this is from Treptow district. First she's walking the Elsenstrasse northbound and then she "hits" the wall that runs along Heidelberger Strasse. So she turns right at the crossroad and walks along Heidelberger Strasse to her house. This is just a hunch.
Well I did leave my native country to live and work in a country where my work was rewarded and where I could express my opinion without fearing imprisonment for criticizing the leaders.
Because the Western Europe was democratic with the lead of the USA and Eastern Europe was comunism with the lead of CCCP (russia today). Berlin wall was the border between them. And present day Germany was separated for DDR(democratic) and NDR (comunism). The berlin wall "is" the line, where the United army and Soviet army met during the ending of WW2.
I was 1 year old when the Wall Fell. Having looked back on it, I can understand the euphoria. and Russia should be getting a new president (NOT Putin) in the next couple years, cuz i think he's at his max term numbers
The two walls was build for totallt different purposes, and is not in any way comparable. The israelis have a legitime right to defend themselves and their childeren against aggressors.
You live in Ireland, never lived in a Communist country, and do not want to listen to someone who lived there. Those who do not want to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.
Now, now, resorting to ad-hominems when you do not like what I have to say. I did not say anything about your intelligence. And growing up in a communist society I had to go through a lot of political education, that was compulsory. So I know the etimology of the word communism. In the 19th century there were a lot of communes established on a voluntary basis by the members and all failed. So when someone does not agree with you you start throwing insults
I watched your videos and I see that you are interested in criminal organizations. Now you have to understand the difference in a criminal pushing drugs and killing his comptetitors and a people fighting for their right to eat breath sleep and shit without someone building a 10 meter wall in front of their house. Western people like you have a hard time defining this. It isnt that hard, all you have to do is to imagine someone doing this to you.
I'm divided on Israel... it was wrong to create it and they hardly justify creating ghettos for the Palestinians by saying that their fathers were in ghettos... But you're wrong about them "choosing" Israel, Israelis had been emigrating back to Israel since the days of the Ottomon Empire! Establishing settlements that were protected by local jewish militia.
Yes it is uncomparable when you live in NORWAY!!! My uncle has seen both wall and the only difference is that the israeli wall is bigger. Think first, talk second.
I am just thinking if you would be a political activist in a communist country and had the power over a hapless guy who said something against communism something you did not like, what would you do to him? Since you already throw insults, and do not seem capable of a civilized discussion without at least verbal aggression.
Verbal aggression is not the same thing as physical aggression. Plus the only time I would ever get aggressive is if my life was in danger. Other than that, I am a very peaceful and calm individual. You want civil discussion? I want arguments without personal opinion. The world is a trade-off between values, and concepts.
HAHAHA Shai you are very funny. Isnt it funny that im an albanian and saying that serbs are innocent, wouldnt you call that SARCASM? Look up the word to understand why i wrote that in my presentation.
Regardless of ethical or religous origin, everyone would fight if this happened to them. If you support Israel then please let me come to your home and take everything. If you are not a hypocrit then you should just leave your home to me without saying a word. I can make you understand the anger that Palestinians feel. Where do you live?
Think thre dimensionally, Both walls have been built to divide and many suffer for the sake of a few. By your logic then the israelis shouldnt have started the war in the first place and thy could go back to their homes in europe.
Well guess what? No one cares about your opinion. Whats the point of having an opinion when no one will listen to what you have to say? Words alone will never change the world.
If you study history then you would realize that Palestinians have no more rights than Israelis to live in those lands. Israel was a nation thousands of years before the Palestinian people were born as a nation. Both countries must live together and they must learn to share the land.
You grew up in a communist society? Wow! Of course you know what you are talking about!! Well, I'm afraid to say, the things which happened under communism happen under capitalism. I have lived my entire life in capitalism, and I've been through some fucked up shit.
