The Berlin Wall has now been down for longer than when it was up but today you can still find pieces of it in its original position. It’s known as a symbol of ideological division and suppression of human rights during the Cold War. But when it was up for 28 years it was a terrifying concrete wall that cut Berlin into almost two separate cities.
In August 1961, the Communist government of the German Democratic Republic of East Germany began construction of the wall and placement of barbed wire between west Berlin and the East. It was to be perfected over the years until we they constructed the concrete barrier we know of today. Only 2% to 3% of the Outer Berlin Wall still stands in its original position today and this video covers the largest remaining piece of the Berlin Wall.
How did the Berlin Wall happen?
Overnight on the 12th and 13th August 1961, construction workers began tearing up streets and erecting barriers in Berlin. This night marked the beginning of one of history’s most infamous dividing lines: the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall stood from 1961 to 1989, dividing the city of Berlin. In this video Ben goes looking for the Berlin Wall and explains a little about what it was and why it was built.
