If you are in the busy Potsdamer Platz, you quickly forget that this place was until the fall of the wall probably one of the most desolate places you can imagine. It looked from a lookout platform over the up to four-meter-high concrete wall of the so-called "anti-fascist defensive wall" over barriers, death strip and barbed wire up to the Leipziger Straße. The only colors were the graffiti on the western side of the wall. No one could imagine until shortly before the fall of the Wall in November 1989 that the division of Germany would not last forever. Today, as a reminder of the course of the Wall, a double row of paving stones is embedded in the asphalt over a length of approx. 8 kilometers. At irregular intervals you will find a bronze band with the inscription: "Berlin Wall 1961 - 1989". The length of the wall around West Berlin was about 156 km, of which about 44 km separated West Berlin from East Berlin.
