Most of the cars in the scrapyards where still in the showroom when my "new" car was already old enough to be scrapped. (I drive a "new" 1994 Toyota Celica and an old 1972 Hillman Avenger.)
I'm jealous.... it's so rare to find a partner that enjoys a day out at the scrapyard. You two always seem to have fun regardless of the task at hand or the outing :) Cheers
It's really not all that rare, people just settle too quickly. (I'm not saying she's not rare, she is! But it's not rare to share interests with your partner. All of my partners were into photography and vinyl collecting and loved old cars)
I approve of this purchase 100%. It's always good to have a bangernomics car that sold in good numbers so you can get parts from a scrapyard or pattern parts. It's sort of thing I'd like to buy. I'll be interested to see what sort of fuel economy you get and what it proves to be like in day to day use.
Ahh. A scrap yard visit and finding just what you need. Such joy! And a wonderful lady who likes to accompany you. Life doesn’t get much better. Well done! Now about those horrible green wheels.....
This is proper Hubnut! A scrap yard like that is a gold mine and has lead to the sort of Hubnut tinkering I love to watch. I can’t wait for more berlingo adventures (Bella is the first name that came to mind when I watched the collection caper but I couldn’t comment as I was watching it on the telly!!) Great stuff!👍
Fair play guys for the money you paid and a scrapyard visit you made a potentially very usable (and economical, I'm looking at you now Betty) daily. Well done!
One of the reasons I chose Mazda this time round (2016 CX-9 Signature) was that they aren’t afraid of installing a larger rear wiper than most manufacturers. I’d like to see someone make custom rear wipers (longer/extendable arm and longer blade) for those stuck with modern 10cm wipers which really do nothing. Thanks for the “junkyard” tour. It has been too long since I visited one. Thanks to both of you for sharing with us.
It actually seems as though you've bought something reasonably sensible there! Best of luck with it! I can't help but think that you should have looked for a boot floor carpet while you were at it though.
I'm not sure if any of the carpet in this one is original, the shade of green in the rear looked quite off too, more like indoor/outdoor carpet from a DIY store - which is of course quite Hub Nut.
I just realised where I've seen those seat cover colours before! They look very much like the character Kickass from the movie Kickass. Looks very much like his superhero costume.
They are very good types of vehicle. I had a grey Fiat Doblo 2007, 1.9 multijet, it was remapped and it did loads of mpg. Extremely practical and surprisingly fun when remapped. Good choice, enjoy.
I had nothing but trouble with my Doblo, mostly electrical issues. I had to literally re-engineer the wiper linkages as they would just fall to bits! It was a shame as it was the perfect size and shape for my requirements.
Our old Doblo FT04 MUY was a fantastic vehicle, tough, always started used for business and family, so reliable and rugged 1.9 JTD a lovely economical powerful engine, it's still going here in Devon.
I’ve long considered one but my cooker repair guy said his newish one was always wearing out its cheapo suspension and costing him hundreds every year…. definitely a budget vehicle unfortunately but they can go on for ages.
I’ve just bought the same car, same colour and year but a 1.9d. Absolutely love it. Sure it’s going to be a future classic too. That scrap yard looks amazing. Could spend hours in there. Glad it’s not just me who gets excited about load covers. 👍
I used to LOVE scrap yard visits - used to call it progging for parts … used to see how many bits you could squirrel away in your pockets and toolbox - until they started checking. I remember walking out with a Renault 11 rocker shaft down the Levi’s … (money was tight …). So exciting when you spot a car you’ve not picked over before.
The shaft in my driver's side mirror broke a few years back, fear of breaking the clips on the cover is the reason it is still held in position with black electrical tape. so well done for having a go.
@@AaronSmart.online I changed the mirror caps on a Fiat 500 recently and this is exactly how it was done. The tricky part is trying to evenly spread the pressure on the back of the mirror glass when pulling it out to avoid breaking it.
Great to see you both back hubnutting (not sure of the grammar on that), and having fun. Particularly enjoyed the load cover conversation at TCD! I’ve got a 1989 Renault super5 if you ever want to test one 🙂
Which engine in the super 5 if I might ask? My parents had a 1990 one with the 1.4 petrol, went like stink! Had the diesel one as well, love those cars
@@zachharrison1885 it’s a 1.4, but the C2J so by no means a GTTurbo. It also has the chocolate-teapot auto box which makes it rare for all the wrong reasons 😆 I figure it’ll make a good candidate for electric conversion one day!
@@richardsutton7791 oof great engine, think that's the one my parents had too - definitely not a gt turbo haha. Is it nippy? I imagine it being auto slows proceedings down a bit however hahahah
Me neither, because my cars are too old to find any parts there. I did get a part for my Avenger back in 2001 but not going to find anything now. I also remember how dangerous they could be, I finished up in casualty after an accident in a scrapyard once.
Funny how whenever you went, if it was a longish extraction involving climbing up at least one car height with plenty of oil leak on your hands, after about 20 mins you always needed a poo...
Rear axle can be a problem seals go because of rust which lets water into pivot bearings which case play and eventually snap torsion bars as it all goes out of alignment. Spray wd40 around main pivot every so often to prevent rust damaging seals. Back door handle inner can break, repair kit off eBay. 2.0 hdi is a tough engine. Good luck
I have just bought a 1999 Berlingo. green and yellow interior, just had it's 50K service and needed a thermostat, new coolant and 1000 peanut bulbs! . Mine is a 1.8i with ZF autobox, a 3 door Berlingomatic... Great video, ah for the simple(ish) life.
Having never owned and knowing nothing about the Berlingo since new, I can confirm that they are totally useless at towing caravans (hope this helps with any future debates with Miss HubNut)
That's a really successful caper there; wonderful to see. Already love the new HubNut car; it is such an interesting thing, especially with that interior. So nice to hear the two of you giving Berlingo facts and advice.
This Berlingo is turning out to be everything that hideous Fiat Multipla should have been (I like the multipla, just not that pink nightmare), shaping up really nice now - tunes, wipers, parcel shelf, mirror! Great content!
oh the look of unfettered joy and a little dance on having a rear wiper where there was none before, almost brings a tear to ones eye. There's also the comfort of knowing there's a ready supply of spare parts if required and if you so desired the option of making it a Harlequin, now that would be interesting. I think it was Steve Cropley of Autocar who used to sing the praises of the family barge. Next project, a slide out camper & kitchen unit for show attendances. :-)
Nice one Ian, it's great to see some re-use of old parts to be used to fix missing bits on cars that have lost or broken them. It'll be interesting to see your journey with 'Bob, Bertha, Bella, Clive?' the Berlingo.
What absolute fun, getting parts from old cars. U could spend hours in this type of "scrappies ". Always very satisfying. Looking forward to seeing how the new Citroën does.
I had a metallic blue Peugeot 304 back in the late 70s with a metallic gold rear door from a scrapper. I eventually got it sprayed, but it was definitely distinctive in the meantime.
Keep the gold mirror cover in the spares bin. Never know when a Cymro osprey will drop an integrity-unsullied clam shell unit on the green one. At speed. Then Bertrand Berlingo can be a winking Berlingo. Until the spare can be fitted. Ah ha! How's my Welsh/Brit speak?
Gotta love a good scrap yard! Always enjoy a visit to one, even if it's just for a mooch around! Shame about that dent in the tailgate, perhaps its time for HubNut tries his hand at paintless dent removal 😆
Nice bit of quality entry-level tinkering, the sort that always happens once you get a new car. Drop everything and address lots of minor issues. One hint for the mirror would be to squeeze some glue into the case to stop rattling of the broken bits then fix the new trim with a combo of glue and silicone sealant to keep rainwater out of the clip holes.
I meant to comment the single best modification to my 2007 petrol berlingo are heated seat covers from Amazon. 30quid, plug into cig lighter had for 5 yrs. lovely instant action and lovely for the winter where u are.
I was in the middle of watching Itchyboots, when your notification popped up. I stopped watching her to watch this, I hope you feel special……..😉😘😘😘😘😘😘🤪🤣🤣
If they make the Berlingo in Red, with those gold accents it would would look like Iron Man! I do so enjoy a successful day at the scrapyard, well done!
Hi Ian & Mrs Hubnut good weather finding bit for your new car I hope you find all your bits much cheaper to go to breakers save money that s good all the best to you and Mrs Hubnut & little one s 😎👍🏴🏴🔧
What a great video from the Hubnuts. It is nice to see Ian going down the recycling route to do some basic repair work to his New Ride "Betty Berlingo".
Lovely practical old motor, for some reason I used to fancy one despite being a single bloke. I love good design and practicality, this car has it in spades. Proper bargain.👍
When I lived in Spain, I bought a brand new Berlingo Mk 2, cost 12,500 euros in 2006 used it everyday for getting around and was very good for picking up friends from the airport and all their luggage. When I separated from my partner in 2009, as I couldn't take it it with me, I sold it to her and really missed it after that, but not my partner.
I got mine 5 years back and it is currently having a few jobs done on it that have been pushed to one side before the next MOT so the crankshaft and cam shaft oil seals, it will be getting a new exhaust and some new rubber sub frame blocks as well. It is not worth all that money, but it is fun to drive and hauls a trailer nicely so I have no need to stick a towbar on my Passat and to be honest you have to think when you drive the Berlingo where as the Passat can be driven almost in a daze.
i have to hand it to hubby , right at the beginning when he "asked" miss hubnut to hold the wing mirror AND keep on filming and the return was" im an octopus now am i ??" he remained quiet ...a lesson no doubt painfully learned
I once saw a Vel Satis parked in my neighborhood in Manhattan New York. That was quite unbelievable, because it's almost impossible to bring a car that isn't EPA and DOT certified and less than 25 years old into the USA, even if it has foreign plates.
Lovely to see work progressing already. It's extremely satisfying to see simple cosmetic jobs sorted that really do make a big difference. It would be fantastic to see this car at FOTU. I'd love to have a good nosey around this car. I'll be attending fir the first time this year with the Mégane Coupe. Sad to see the R5 rusting away (my first car was an R5) and I've had a few MK2 Clio in period and really liked them. The Vel Satis is another example of how the French are better at exuberant luxury than the Germans but hopeless at residual values. That interior still looks wonderful some two decades on.
Please get some wheeltrims! Even if you can't get the original type, you can buy a set of perfectly acceptable aftermarket ones for £20, and they make such a difference to a slightly tired older car.
Old Peugeot or Citroen alloy wheels off vehicles of the same age and platform look good on Berlingo's and Partner's. The Citroen Saxo and Xsara VTR alloys tend to look really good on these.
I don't think you could have done any better than one of these (or IMO a Kangoo) for practical, HubNut family motoring really. I think you've done well with this one
Sorted ... easy as ... I think you will enjoy it as there just so practical ..i loved mine and kept it for years at the end of its life it was doing tip runs .. ive never used a car as much ..... 🙂👍
Miss hubnut is right again should have got the two mirror with the gold panels that would have looked great. The Citroën dealer in Porthmadog now is a caravan dealer.
Yes definitely, the clips are nearly always a one time only type moulding, once snapped into place, you'll never get the old one off without breaking it! I know, as I used to work at at a factory that manufactured car door & rear view mirrors!
Wow I am amazed to see many Renault Scenic MK2's in that scrap yard, I remember when they came out as we had one as a rental car in France during the killer heat wave as it had to replace my dads Land Rover Discovery TD5 temporarily when it decided to do that most common thing a Land Rover does. I think those Scenics had only just been released in France when we went as we didn't see any other's.
Now I fancy a road trip to have a look round myself - that's a 420-mile round trip from where I live. I need to put together a shopping list of all the missing or broken bits on my three usable cars.
That looks like an excellent purchase and on the face of it appears to be an honest car with a lot of history. I could hardly believe it when I saw the Berlingo in the scrap yard with the same funky interior. Green and gold are my two favourite colours for a car. What's not to like?
The car with a donor door less rusty than yours was inevitably half crushed by two stored cars balanced precariously on top, rendering the door useless.
Good Score of parts for your first day. It was Entertaining watchinng u Hunt for the Socket..! Classic and we have all prob'ly done it..!! Last time I needed a Scrap yard. It was 'No Wandering' tell us what you want, we will fetch it and Charge more..!! ( in my Local area anyway..! Reason given, SAFETY..!) Anyway Good luck. Cheers all, Kim in Oz. 😎
I thought this video was going to be rubbish, but it turns out it's rather good indeed, I do love a scrap yard and lol 2:05... 14:54 push that dent out lol. I'm in the "go back and get the other gold one" camp, then you have a spare. A pair of gold mirrors would have been nice.
Another one of those cars that I secretly wanted, but could never convince myself enough to buy.. Looks very practical and spacious. Ideal for a family and their dogs 🙂
Nice car! The gear knob in the golden scrap Berlingo looked quite nice on camera, you could've grabbed it while you were there. The Berlingo/Kangoo is on the shortlist if either of my parents' cars ever gives up for good but one thing I don't quite like about the Kangoo is the risk of hitting your head on the overhead storage if you're 6'+. It's happened to me. Another car I quite fancy is the Toyota Yaris Verso. It's amazing how much you can fit into one of these! Apparently they can have issues with first gear though.
