The way the conductor mouths "bum bum" during the low brass excerpt made my day

Played this in high school, but hearing it while playing a racing game just puts a dumb grin on my face the entire time. What a piece!

I sung in the opera as a child, I can still remember the scene playing on stage when this came up

In Finland, every independence day we hold the Independence Day Reception at the presidential residence where the president greets important people. This piece is always played last when all the ambassadors, generals, important political figures and former presidents arrive.

Never thought i would like classical music but here we are... i get goosebumps on this masterpiece! Magnificent 🎉

I was lucky enough to perform this under Sir Simon in 1997. What a great summer that was!

He could really fit as Stanislas Lefort, no doubt! «Merci messieurs c’était très bien. C’était très bien. Vous, vous vous c’était bien là-bas. Vous c’était… bien, enfin c’est comme-ci comme-ça. Dites-moi, vous on ne vous a pas entendu. On je vous entend jamais. Vous n’arrêtez pas de bavarder, faites attention, faites très attention. Écoutez, j’ai une conception personelle de l’ouvrage… Ce n’est pas assez triomphal, ce n’est pas assez orgueilleux… De l’orgueil bon sang! Papapin, papin, papiiiin… Bon sang, enfin!»

I played the snare drum part on this piece during a high school honors band event 40 years ago. Two things I remember about it: 1) I thought the piece itself was awesome and I’ve loved it ever since, 2) We (there were two of us) could never get the feel of the snare part at 3:26, although this performance helps me hear it better than most.

This interpretation has some small variances in speed from what I’m accustomed. I think this interpretation leads to a stronger finish.

This is one of the best version a heard. Maybe I could compare with the one that the Los Angeles Philarmonic conducted by Zubin Metha played in 1994.

These three men knew they had a concert to play tonight, but they've forgotten their instruments, so as punishment they must all sit up front of the orchestra and be stared at with confusion by the audience. Shame Shame Shame. LOL yeah right.

Rhythmically: why the curiously limping gait ("agogic" the stuffed shirts would call this mannerism)? Why the utter lack or verve, elan, insight or hint of Berlioz's crucial and mordant, razor wit? Why did Mr Rattle opt to play this piece at all? Why should we bother to listen? Anyway, now he's ambled off back to Europe: the Brits, it seemed, were not in any conceivable way up to scratch. As Harry Corbett, compere of the old Sooty and Sweet Show on ITV, used to sigh to us: "Bye-bye, children. Bye-bye." This is like finding kippers which have gone limp and flaccid in the bottom of a prematurely defrosted fridge. And your mum told you, they'd be so nice. Dead fish, is what we have here: or else Berlioz with a verruca.😑
