Conducted by Mikko Franck, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France performs the "Symphonie fantastique" op.14 by Hector Berlioz. Concert recorded live on 2 May at the Radio France Auditorium in Paris.
Symphonie fantastique op. 14 or An Episode in the Life of an Artist, in Five Parts:
I. Rêveries - Passions
II. Un bal
III. Scène aux champs
IV. Marche au supplice
V. Songe d'une nuit du sabbat
Symphonie fantastique: Épisode de la vie d'un artiste... en cinq parties (Symphonie Fantastique: An Episode in the Life of an Artist, in Five Parts) was first performed on 5 December 1830, days before Berlioz's 27th birthday, in the legendary hall of the Conservatoire de Paris (today the Conservatoire d'art dramatique), a model hall in terms of proportions and acoustics according to the composer, an opinion he held until the end of his life. The expression "symphonie fantastique" was until then but a subtitle inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann, whose Phantasiestücke were baptised in French Contes fantastiques. Over the years and after countless performances, the title Symphonie Fantastique gradually became the work's official title: Berlioz therefore used the expression An Episode in the Life of an Artist, in Five Parts to designate the combined works of the Symphonie followed by Le Retour à la vie (premiered in Paris in 1832, changed and corrected in Weimar in 1855 with the title Lélio, ou le retour à la vie).
A coming-of-age work for the composer, the Symphonie fantastique marks an important point in the composer's life and development: after various attempts with different forms (mass, opera, overture, mélodie...), Berlioz had finally composed a work of which he was particularly satisfied: the Huit Scènes de Faust (1828-1829). However, his enthusiasm for the work quickly dissipated and, "still under the influence of Goethe's poem," he began writing a "descriptive symphony of Faust" to illustrate the "expressive instrumental genre." This was to become the Symphonie Fantastique, allowing the theatre, albeit an imaginary theatre, to burst into the concert hall: "We will stage the symphony as we do a great opera," wrote Berlioz.

I think mr Franck here has one of the best orchestras in the world in his hands. The way they play this Berlioz masterpiece is in its own not ot this earth. But then it is a french orchestra and a french composer!

Fun? The more I see of Mikko Franck, the more I understand that he is one of us. And yes, we are all funny, even you. Mikko has that quality that he dont want to be a Karajan, some herostratic dirigent up in the sky, he only wants to get the best music out of this. If you only see this and think he is fun to watch, I suggest you to shift to other music.

Isaac. Maybe this is your normal language, but I am not used to it. Not at all. If you are very angry at me, perhaps you shall try to articulate it more specific and perhaps with other words. You are welcome. And I have already left my position as a gate keeper. I have more things to do. But I agree with you that classical music can be fun. Greetings from Sweden!

Thanks for the upload. I first heard this symphony when I was around 15 years of age and it captivated me. The first movement in particular is, IMO, one of the most amazing ever written but then I would think that because for me Berlioz (along with Sibelius) is perhaps the greatest musical genius of all time.

A beautiful performance, marred only slightly in video production (no fault of the orchestra) with the appearance of the offstage oboe at the beginning of Scène aux champs. Specifically, and as far as I'm aware, this instrument should be very much heard but not seen.
