Good luck, right now frequent mowing, post emergent weed control, would be my first two steps in a rough lawn. After those weeds die an application of fertilizer and maintaining an inch of water would be next. Good luck!

Good advice. All five points are true. My 1 year old Tif 419 was not rolled after laying and pillowed out tremendously. So it is very bumpy. Can not mow any lower that 2.5". Looks nice and healthy but would prefer a lower cut. Started professional sanding this summer. Seems to be on it's way to being more comfortable when mowing. Tif 419 Bermuda turf is tough stuff but remember not to overseed with box store seeds. Not the same.

Just moved into a house that has Bermuda from a house that had St. Augustine, so its definitely a change for me... I currently have my deck set at 2.75", but still scalping areas of the Bermuda... Should i raise it to 3.17"? Its the next slot up on my Ryobi... Also, is the Bermuda grass looking brown after i cut it because i cut it too low?? Im so confused... :(
@lanieroutside
@lanieroutside Год назад
If you are scalping I would try raising the deck or consider “resetting” the height of cut by mowing lower and bagging then maintaining at your preferred height. You might also need to mow more often Bermuda grows aggressively and usually needs to be cut twice per week during the growing season. Good luck on your new lawn!

Very good stuff! I hope you post more. So, any interest in reel mowing? I bought one (a reel mower) last weekend and have been using it in my backyard and it’s really impressive! I’m easing the HOC down a bit with each mow. I’m at about an inch now. Still green, very carpet-like. I see you get good info from UGA. I’m in central Alabama and Auburn has been very helpful for me. @@NYNick49 It might if you have the budget as most Bermuda is established by sod. If you have shade Bermuda isn’t a good choice. Question, some people say that leaving the cut grass on your lawn is a bad thing do you agree
@lanieroutside
@lanieroutside Год назад
Leaving clumps of grass clippings is bad. Leaving fine clippings that are mulched up is good and reduces the nitrogen needs. They will decompose quickly but you have to mow often to achieve this. The only time I bag is when I spring scalp, reset the height of cut or just need the clippings for my compost pile. Great question👍

Hello, great video. I subscribed to keep up. First time owning a Bermuda grass lawn. It’s been 4 months since the sod was installed. I’ve been mowing but every time I mow, the lawn looks yellow and patchy, like I cut off the green. I mow to keep the grass at about 2 inches. Is this normal? Also, going into the winter. What should I do? I see some people dethatch and overseed. Season here in Texas is in the mid to high 70s. Thanks!
@lanieroutside
@lanieroutside 10 месяцев назад
Thank you, with new sod don’t do much until next year, no pre emergent and don’t de thatch and definitely don’t overseed ever! If the temps get cool enough in your area the Bermuda will go dormant and brown. Once temps warm again in spring it will green back up! Congrats on that new lawn👍

I have a common Bermuda lawn and got the crab grass under control for the most part, but having trouble with quite a bit of what I think is nutsedge. (Lighter color, faster growing than the grass) Do you have a specific pre or post emergent for that? I’ve read it’s tough to get rid of and that you shouldn’t pull by hand, as it spreads seeds. Broad weed killer isn’t touching it.
@lanieroutside
@lanieroutside 2 года назад
I use round up for lawns, the northern version. It is also labeled for Bermuda and works on nutsedge. It will yellow the bermuda for a while but it recovers. Just make sure to get the product labeled safe for lawns. If that doesnt work you could go to domyown.com and order some sedgehammer. I've not ever had a bad problem with nutsedge but looks like that would be the product to get. Thanks and good luck!

Most counties have extensions from universities, UGA in my case, set up throughout the states. They have websites and local offices that can help with guides for your area and soil testing etc. I find these guides to be much more helpful than a lot of the "RU-vid" advice since they aren't trying to sell you anything. Because of monetary considerations or local water restrictions some people can't water as much as they need to. But what I like about a warm season lawn (I have zoysia) is that it may look crappy or turn brown in spots but after a big rain it will green back up. The fescue lawns in my neighborhood turn brown and still stay brown after a rain.
@lanieroutside
@lanieroutside 2 года назад
Absolutely! I have Bermuda and also Fescue and the Bermuda fairs far better and perks up much faster after a good rain. I made the decision to cut the watering down to my fescue and just spend the money on water for my Bermuda. Luckily rains returned and we have not seen any watering restrictions here. Just have to do the best you can if you have them and like you say the warm season lawn will bounce back. Thanks for watching and commenting! Good luck the rest of the summer.

I normally mulch when I mow, but I was thinking the last time I mowed because I had so many weeds that I bagged the last couple times because I felt like if I wasn’t mulching it with the weeds I was cutting it would help me control? Also, I see your recommendation for the fertilizer that I got some baby grass that have taken growth in a large bare spot. Do you think that same type of fertilizer to help it take off now for different concentration?
@lanieroutside
@lanieroutside 3 месяца назад
Bagging is really just a personal preference. I don’t do it regardless of weeds. When you return clippings they contain nitrogen and moisture which is beneficial to the lawn. Hit those weeds with a “safe for lawns” type of herbicide. As far as fertilizer if you didn’t do a soil test a standard type of lawn fertilizer will work fine for your lawn. Right now watering is a big focus in much of the country. If you aren’t getting a lot of rain be cautious with the fertilizer and herbicides. Good luck!

7:18 i dethatched it and then scalped it. I couldn't believe how much dead dry grass I had. It's been two weeks and I've watering it with sprinklers and by hand in areas where sprinklers don't reach. Grass slowly getting green, but allot of brown grass still and some places have dark brown like maybe fungus and I do know I saw bugs after dethatching so maybe that's it. I'm going to use a bug remover and then fertilize it the next day also going to put down a layer of healthy top soil with some manure in it to help with soil conditions. I live in southern California where we have clay soil, and it gets extremely hot like 90s and low 100s in July and August. Right now we're seeing 80s and low 90s (June). We don't see allot of weeds just a few that I pull up, but going to use a weed and feed like you suggested to control it. I saw a video on Bermuda Grass where they treated for Grubs(insect) so I think I might have them in grass, so I'll lay some Grub and insect remover down. I thought I would wait until grass starts to green and then Aerator it to help with water reaching roots better. I liked your video and realized I'm not watering enough. The ground in high lump areas(just a few areas) is really hard and looks like it needs fresh soil there, but I think just needs aerator and water. Wish me luck !

@lanieroutside 6 месяцев назад
It’s a 42 pound bag and covers 15000 sq ft at bag rate. For my Bermuda lawn I applied half the bag, just slightly under bag rate with great results. The stonewall pre emergent is a 50 pound bag and covers 14800 sqft, I just follow the instructions on the bag which varies based on your location. I am using a cheaper fertilizer now. Just follow the instructions and don’t over apply. Thanks for watching👍

How many times do you water your grass a week and long?
@lanieroutside
@lanieroutside Год назад
I only water if I am not getting any rainfall. When their is no rain I normally stick to 3 times per week alternating days. Timing is something you will have to figure out for your lawn using tuna cans or something to measure how long your sprinkler or irrigation takes to put out an inch of water. That being said I try to limit my watering if we are getting rainfall and just supplement with my irrigation system when needed. Thanks for watching.

Bermuda will bounce back just give it some time and adjust your height of cut up above where you cut it. More frequent mowing may help in the future. Thanks for the question and good luck the rest of the season!

I need help. I'm not sure what to do first. I live in the south and my grass is not growing , it has brown patches and it has weeds. My question is. What should I do first to get my lawn to look like yours? Do I follow those step during the hottest months?
@lanieroutside
@lanieroutside 2 года назад
First off make sure you know your grass type. If you have Bermuda these basics can help. You just have to kind of start in the middle. If I was in your situation right now I would make sure it is getting enough water, then spray for weeds with a safe for lawn product like spectracide weed stop for lawns then apply an app of fertlizer. You could go with an organic like milorganite if you are new to fertilizing it wont burn the lawn. Then just be patient and keep up with mowing/watering. You should see improvement. Good luck and thank you for the question!

I did this video on the calendars I use for guidance on my Bermuda: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8H1CB2Gtbxs.html Following guidelines from UGA is a great simple start. What’s your suggestions for Bermuda in SC in March. First step cutting how much and when to apply fertilizer and what numeric measurements (00-00-00).
@lanieroutside
@lanieroutside 6 месяцев назад
Well that really depends on what part of SC you live in! Step one is applying Pre emergent if you haven't already. When you are starting to green up and soil temps are rising you can think about scalping (most people on youtube do this too early) If you don't plan to scalp you just needs to make sure to mow a notch below your normal mowing height for the first mow. If you haven't had a soil test use any turf fertilizer and follow instructions. Don't apply it until your lawn is greened up and growing though. Good luck! Thanks for watching.
@Hopefullymarried
@Hopefullymarried 2 месяца назад
I apply a preemergent HEAVY in the late winter. When the soil temp reaches 50 degrees, i apply the pre emergent. Wait two weeks then apply again. When the second application is down and i see the green buds start to appear, I’ll apply a triple 10 fertilizer moderately heavy. Then once a month add a fertilizer, followed with bio char supplement and when the heat is really on, an iron supplement for deep greening. WATER!!! Lots of watering. Deep watering help promote deep roots for healthy lawns. I water my lawn three times a week, along with a soaker hose usage. Lawn looks great. Cutting three times a week is not uncommon…spring scalp after the first month…wait mid summer scalp again…then i keep the deck low at 1” height…golf course green and short

@lanieroutside
@lanieroutside Год назад
Thanks! According to the label 2 times per year max at 4oz/1000 sq ft. That is for a "blanket" treatment where you are covering the entire lawn. Spot spraying can occur more but wait 2 weeks after you have sprayed a weed before spraying again. I typically spot spray but if you have a entire lawn of weeds a blanket application may help you get them under control just wait for the Bermuda to come out of dormancy first. Thanks for watching👍👍

@lanieroutside
@lanieroutside Год назад
Thanks! Not sure on the variety, it is a small Japanese maple, doesn’t get any larger. It was here when we bought the house. You will use the same program following Uga guidelines but your timing may be different than mine as you have a longer growing season. Your Bermuda will come out of dormancy earlier and stay green longer in the fall. Your spring pre emergent may be a little earlier and fall a little later. I stop fertilizing in August, you may need to fertilize in Sept for example. It’s all based on soil temps and when your lawn is actively growing but the same basics still work! Thanks for watching and good luck this season👍
