This is definitely the one thing that makes me think, "Maybe I don't need to move south at some point." No one has ever made this process look anything but miserable lol. Excited for all of this actual lawn care content making a come back though from everyone.
I had the exact thought as you. Maybe i would scalp next weekend, but i saw my weather forecast was done with the freeze and... i saw my neighbor cutting his lawn so i had to dominate him!
Always look forward to hearing your perspective as it seems your philosophy of lawncare is very similar to mine and unlike the elite lawncare channels on you tube, you know the ones! Their sponsored equipment and products that us mere mortals can’t afford, or choose not to spend our dollars that way, while I do watch and like them I know I don’t have the time to work on my lawn like that , keep up the good work brother!lawncare for us common folk!
Really appreciate that feedback. Good to hear that my mission for the channel is being accomplished. Thanks so much. Happy to have ya along for the ride.
I just scalped with the cal trimmer from about 1” to 1/3” and I had to empty the catcher after every single pass down and back. It sucks lol but worth it!
Scalped my weeds Tuesday. Went as low as I could go without tilling up the whole yard. Hope it helps what Bermuda I have crowd out the weeds. This is the year I get the lawn right.
I was worried it would be a lot more cumbersome getting the clippings in the bag. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Thanks for watching bro! Appreciate ya!
👊 Thanks man. Appreciate that. It's getting crazy out there with so many folks freaking out over their lawns having to be perfect. Gotta keep it real on Budget Lawns. 😎
Inch and a quarter? Cmon man!! Lol Looking great. Scalped mine a couple weeks ago and it’s already green. Central NC here. I do keep mine at 1/2 inch. You should try it.
@Chad Cochran you know of any good lawn leveling business in central NC area? My subdivision bermuda is horribly bumpy. scalped with Honda rotary and the lowest setting was impossible without crashing dirt each pass.
@Chad Cochran LOL, yeah, if it were smoother I'd keep it around .75. That's the plan for the new lawn coming up. Plus, I like the every 3 or 4 day mows compared to every other or ever day haha. My wife will kill me if that frequency goes up any more. Thanks so much man. Sounds like your prime for a great season. 👊Appreciate ya!
@Daniel Ferreras Same as what Chad said. I do my own. Here's a link to a playlist I made with every step I take to do my bermuda lawn with results, ru-vid.com/group/PLI5KxvSvsO34b7LmPABK7ED6psv0aMVI4 Hope it helps. Thanks for watching.
Hey, thanks man. I'll have to go check it out. So many vids about lawn care coming out that I can't keep up with 'em all. I appreciate it. You bet man!
I think the scalp came out good! Glad I don't have to do that with blue grass or fescue😂 and the dreaded turn around marks on the sidewalk.. happens all the time and when the grass is wet it creates a mess
Thanks buddy! Haha, that's a plus for ya for sure. Yeah, the ole turnaround marks. We'll get some rain shortly to wash them off. Thanks as always for watching man. Appreciate ya.
I have a question, my lawn is only weeds and dirt, do I or should I scalp or can I just kill off the weeds, dig them up , rototill to mix the old soil and new then overseed? I’m in Ohio and grass is normally a Kentucky blue grass mix. Could I get away with my rotary mower and can a reel mower been rented? Thanks!
I’d kill them off and and do just as you laid out. Rotary is just fine. You don’t need a reel mower. Unless you want to get into that type of mowing. Thanks for watching. Hope this helps.
Yes! Finally! Someone with a real video about scalping.... You don't have a fresh, unstained polo shirt and pressed khakis.. You look like you've actually been working in the yard... #Truth !!! Lolol
My parents live in Arkansas In California we have a big green bucket for wast clippers. I did not like bagging his clippings. I wish Arkansas would do a California does
Yeah, the bags are a pain. Not all communities do them. The one I live in now doesn't. I just take my clippings to a nearby place that lets me add them to their compost pile. Appreciate ya watching.
If you scalped to dirt, why not maintain it below an inch or 1 1/4? Go for 1/2 or 5/8! I got the trophy this year on tlcf for # of bags post-scalp. 54 42gal bags
Good question. A few reasons. 1. I go so low to get as much dead material out as possible. That's why I never dethatch. One less task to do. 2. It's still way too bumpy. 3. I enjoy lawn care, but I want my family to enjoy me too. I'm already out in the lawn enough and don't want to have to mow so often. I prefer an every 3 or 4 day mow instead of every other. A 2 & 4 year old toddlers along with a new full-time job keep me busy busy as it is. Not to mention, squeezing in these videos. If I do anymore, I may have a price to pay at my wife's hands haha. Holy smokes! You definitely win. That's a bunch of bags. Nice job! Appreciate ya watching and your comment. Happy Easter!
@@BudgetLawns i’m right there with ya; 7 weed old, 4.5 year old and a new job. Gonna be juggling!! Hoping that the pgr keeps mow frequency down! Happy Easter, God bless!
Haha, yup. That's when I did mine, Friday afternoon into the evening. My neighbor was doing his as well. It's that time man. Have a great season. Appreciate ya!
@@BudgetLawns Thanks to COVID I had a mask available to wear while mowing to help with the allergies! I kinda want to take it lower here in the next few days! Your scalp looks great!
Good call on the mask. I'm too stubborn to wear one in the lawn even though I know it'll help. I'm paying for it today, big time. Thanks man. Appreciate that. Have fun dropping yours even more.
I am in Texas and I have not yet scalped my yard.. My home is 1 year old.. it is bermuda and green and thick.. i do use a manual reel mower to mow, i have about 6k sq ft of yard, front and back.. I am contemplating doing a scalp, aerate, and leveling.. It is now August.. as you know we have been in a drought for a long time about 1.5 months.. Should i scalp and all other things i mentioned now in August or early September.. is it necessary.. (btw... i am going to get my lawn down to about 3/4 of an inch so i can get a golf course type lawn) BUT do i do all this NOW or wait til it is Spring ad coming out of dormacy. or do it now and then scalp only in the spring>>>> thank you.. I appreciate your expertise i love watching all your videos... Debora.....
Thank you for the support on the channel. This is a great topic. In fact, I’ll do a video about it this week. In short, I wouldn’t undertake such a big project this late in the season in my area. Depending on where you’re at in TX, you may have the right weather for a while longer to make it work. But if it were me, I would wait until Spring. Your lawn is probably very stressed from the drought and doing all that to it will stress it a whole lot more. Hope this helps. Thanks again.
🌞How many bags did you fill up? You sounded winded, better get in shape for that bigger lawn! 😂 It'll surprise you to see how unlevel a lawn is after scalping. I know I was a little shocked on mine. Great video, keep it up! 👍😎
I was definitely winded. I'm just gonna say it was allergies haha. In fact, I'm severely allergic to everything in the lawn. Just heavily medicated and regular allergy shots to combat it. Ended up with 9 bags. Not too shabby. And you got that right...not a smooth spot on the whole thing. Thanks so much man. Appreciate it as always.
When would you say is to late to scalp the lawn? I’m in the process of switching to a reel mower this season. I just recently purchased a used McLane, definitely needs some work.. but once I’ve got it running properly I am super eager to start my reel mowing journey.
There's really no too late time. Some bermuda lawns never get scalped. Not saying that's good, but you know what I mean. Congrats on the reel. You'll have fun with that. If you've already got a pretty flat/smooth lawn, it's not a must. My old back lawn had never been leveled and it got reel mowed. The front was much worse though and needed some sand for reel mowing. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching.
@@BudgetLawns I appreciate it greatly! Looks like my daughter will get to enjoy pretending to be at the beach in Oklahoma for a day 😂 once more thank you! Love the channel. Literally my go to. I have a neighbor that yells at the kids in the neighborhood and thinks everyone is going to literally obliterate his grass. I absolutely love what you’ve said, it’s the kids and dogs. Why put so much effort into maintaining a lawn. If you’re not going to get enjoyment.
do you have any vids on grasshopper control? if not what you recommend,,, they are terrible up here in Bella vista this year... i have put 2 rounds of granules down but nothing works,,,, any ideas? thanks df
Man you need to wear a face shield/bandana when you mow it will definitely help with the allergies. Take it from me wear ear plugs also or when you get my age (61) your wished you did earlier in life! Scalped mine yesterday after we talked lol with that wind blowing and all that dead grass flying i at times had white out conditions lmao
Haha, you're right. I'm too stubborn to wear anything even though I have the worst allergies known to man. I've been paying for it the last couple days. I do wear the ear plugs when I trim and edge 👊. LOL...the wind makes it worse. Same thing here. Glad you got it done. It's a good feeling. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Appreciate the support!
What if you don't have a gas powered reel mower? Too expensive for me right now Can a regular manual reel do the job? With tons of raking? I just moved to the south
I was fortunate enough to get this one from The Lawn Tools. They just live right up the road from me about half an hour. I'm not sure where you can buy them. Thanks for watching. Appreciate ya!
12:32 🤣🤣. Lots of hard work!! It’s gonna look great though! I’ve heard of others who literally set their Bermuda on fire! Seen one guy do it in a suburban yard similar to yours (looked like he was gonna burn the fence down). Have you ever tried burning it down?
Thanks buddy. Yeah, I've heard of people doing it as well. A little too risky in my opinion. It's so dry and windy around here, I'd hate to have it get away from me. I actually fought a fire in a neighbor's yard when I was in high school. She was burning leaves and it got away from her and scorched the lawn. Pretty scary. Dodged a bullet. Was close to igniting a vacant lot of brush next door. Thanks again dude. Appreciate ya watching.
Get ya an Earthwise 7 blade manual reel to start. That's what I mowed with first to break the ice, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R4D19X8hQ18.html. Only 100 bucks or so and worth it. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Appreciate ya!
I went down to hoc of 1” on my Bermuda grass do u think I need to go lower to maintain it there or could I just keep mowing it at 1” I have a California trimmer 20”
Good question. If you want to maintain it there you should cut it one notch lower and then move back to the 1in hole. It'll be fine if you don't, but it will help things out if you do. Hope this answers your question. Appreciate ya!
Thank you I was debating if I should or not it’s new sod maybe 2months old it looks kinda brown in some spots of the lawn just with me mowing it at 1” two times
That’s often what you’ll hear. However, I’ve heard that it’s not the big deal most people make it out to be. I talked about it in this video last year… ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eJtGcjco2uM.html&feature=share
Sure was. I just use my string trimmer. Sometimes I'll get thin or slow to green up spots along the fence, but once summer hits and the sun is high up in the sky I really don't have any issues with bare spots. Thanks for the questions. Appreciate you!
Kinda is, isn't it? More so from the watching side without all the grass clippings flying in your eyes, nose and mouth lol. Thanks man. Have a great week!
