I walk my lawn for 10 minutes each day pulling weeds by hand early in spring. After one month, all weeds are gone. And each day I see way less weeds. Instead of watching a commercial on TV, go walk your lawn pulling a few weeds each time, After one month you will have a weed free lawn.
I'm digging up crab grass. I learned from my native American grandma that the only way to get rid of crab grass is to dig it up. Roundup won't kill it! I don't use things like Roundup because it kills whatever is under the soul like earthworns. Be kind to the soil! ❤❤
If I may add something that is always overlooked. Get a soil sample test that provides your soil composition. Everything you throw at/on your lawn i.e. water, macros, micros, herbicides, etc…. is affected greatly by your soil composition. For example, my backyard is 89% sand. This means that water, fertilizers, etc percolate thru my sandy soil very fast. So much so that applications, especially water, will get past the grass root zone faster. You absolutely have to adjust your maintenance schedule accordingly. Some tips for sandy soil are to use slower release fertilizers that will stay around the root zone for longer. Watering requires special attention. A good test is to water your yard for whatever time that will give you a half inch of water. Wait 1 hour after watering finishes. Use a probe to get a 6 to 8 inch soil plug. Take note of how far the watering has percolated. You can tell where the plug is wet and dry. Use you math skills to calculate the percolating time it will take for the water to start past the root zone, about 6 inches (it all depends on your type of grass and root maturity) From this test you can adjust your maintenance. Your going to find sandy soil requires more frequent everything at smaller amounts. Watering is tricky and expensive because you may have to water more frequently but deep enough to develop deeper roots. Anyhow, hope this helps someone. You can always renovate your lawn which will give you the opportunity to amend your sandy soil but it can get expensive. Also a lot of folks are no till people who don’t want to break up their existing dirt.
Thank you I really appreciate your video I really appreciate that you're not telling a whole bunch of story about your last weekend how you like your coffee and yada yada yada like the other people that I'm making videos I really appreciate that you get to the point very informative I thank you very much
Great video. Thank you. This reconfirms most of what I was thinking….. However I did get a lot of Bushwick Bill vibes with your voice…. Damn it feels good to be a gangsta…. Lol…. Thanks again.
Dollar spot can be treated a lot of times with a fast release of high nitrogen like a 38-0-0. Fungicides can be an expensive route for something like dollar spot when a lot of times it’s caused by improper watering times and nitrogen deficiency
man this dude is the truth straight to the point great speaker no gimmicks no tricks he has a great lawn I'm subscribing thank you believe us when we say you straight forward no babble kept my attention the whole video
Hey man, I’m in Georgia too. Up in Cumming. I just got some flagstone installed, inset into the grass. They had to remove a lot of grass between the stones and I’m hoping that we have enough growing season left to get the grass to fill in between the stones. Do you think we have at least one more month of fast growing?
I would say 1 more month of moderate growing. Honestly it's really hard to say ,I never thought this year would be a rainy year. No worries, I also installed flag stone in my yard and it will eventually fill in.
”If you got any trees on your property you want to get rid of those” Nope. I’m not gonna remove all the shade and then pay more on electricity bills for AC. Also who doesn’t love trees?!
@@TheALG If it is fertilized it looks nice tall . Do have one at 3.5 inches this year, their lawn slopes some and only mow it every two weeks. But, it is nice and dark green.
I’m in Texas where we’ve had record breaking heat this summer and the idea of cutting my Bermuda 1” is terrifying. There’s not enough water in the county to keep it green. When I was running the family lawncare company, we were cutting Bermuda at 3” and St Augustine at 4” or higher. I’d love to have a lawn looking like a fairway, though. Maybe someday.
Wait!!!!!! NO!!!!!! dont pull your weeds, especially if you level your lawn. you create divots in your yard and unlevel spots. Plus roots will be left in the ground to regrow. DO NOT PULL SEDGE!!!! You will drop seeds as you do so.
Very informative video. The only thing I do not agree with is getting rid of trees to remove shade. Trees grow very slowly and it's a pity to get rid of them solely to remove the shade they cast over the grass. If there is a lot of shade maybe a better option is to use a different type of grass rather than cutting the trees.
Good video. Getting rid of my tree allowed me to perfect the levelling over 2 seasons using a soil sand mix. Also switching to a cheap battery powered reel mower. Its hot and dry in Australia so i use a product called biagra as well as a granular wetter. For my conditions i also find its a must to do a scalp....but your yard is big so thats a lot of mess.
Greetings from Australia!!! You can achieve a result almost as good as a reel/cylinder mower with a Rotary by obtaining a new set of blades and FILE; DO NOT GRIND, a new edge of 20 degrees from the bottom side of the blade...get it really sharp like a craftsman's chisel. Install the blades TIGHT so they do not swing back (I understand they are supposed to move), but with Couch grass (Bermuda) if the blade swings back, it will scalp. Keep mower revs high therefore centrifugal force keeping the blade out is high too. DO NOT use a grass catcher, the clip is fertilizer, water in directly after mowing. Cheers from Hunter Valley Australia.
I'm all for raising the height of a tree, but I'm not cutting down trees in favor of better bermuda. I value the curb appeal and the beauty of nice trees better than a slightly more green yard.
Is it possible to have a nice thick lawn with common bermuda grass? I have my lawn for a year and it still looks terrible. The grass doesn't cover the ground, only growing in patches. In some areas it grows runners but 99.9% of my lawn don't grow runners
Yes, I have common bermuda also. There is a few things that have to happen for bermuda to spread. Full sun, Fertilizer and irrigation. What is also helpful is good soil that is not compacted and check to make sure your soil PH is between 6-7. If you can meet all these requirements then your bermuda will grow aggressively.
First time cutting grass twice in a week. My schedule is getting refined every week. Still experimenting with height of mower. I think I need to bring up 1 notch and it will be good. Need to get a new blade though.
I am trying to figure out how I can keep my full acre moist by watering. What would you think would be the most effective spriner? Or to just do it by sections?
Honestly with that much land, it is very hard to keep up watering. Any chance you would be willing to invest on an inground system? I feel this would save the most time.
new sub here...great vid! I try a spray for weeds on my sisters bermuda but not much improvement, is there one you recommend that wont harm the grass? We are trying to repair damage from tru green...
You can raise the height of cut to help with protecting the roots but if it needs to be cut then go right ahead and cut it. When I was in a beat wave a few years back, I let mine grow to almost 3.5 inches
@@TheALG So I need to cut every week ? Mine has yellow spots but it’s majority green . I thought the grass was dying and i was scared to keep cutting it .
Seeing this video makes me feel alot better. All of my neighbors cut their bermuda sod so low. And for some it actually stays green even cut short. But mine I have to cut it around the 3 setting on my push mower for it to stay green. 2 is ok in spots but my front lawn is sloped towards a ditch. Ive only had this house for a year but it seems like July/August is when my bermuda sod is the greenest and thickest and I have to cut it a little higher than my neighbor's yards. I tried the low approach once and havent gone back. Way too brown
Question, I put down fertilizer 3 days ago. But still a few weeds are popping up. Should I spray for weeds, but I also have a fungus in part of my yard where the neighbors St Augustine and my Bermuda come together. Should I spray a fungicide first or weeds first?
Hi. Do know what type of Bermuda seeds it is better witch brand and where to get?? in any other store besides Home Depot or Lowes because their seed it's all mixed with other kinds, they are not that good at all, I tried 2 types of seed not luck at all.
Yes, your local extension office will send it off from you. It usually cost about 9 dollars. You just go back to where you got the sample bags, they will take care of everything. At least thats what they do in my area.
No, but you don't really need the pole. You can dig and take a sample about 1 or 2 inches below the grass surface. I dont know where you are located but google search extension office near me. It will show the the closet one and go to their website or inperson.
That is true to an extent. If the bermuda is growing aggressively, it will prevent new weeds from establishing itself. When bermuda growth slows down and goes dormant, weeds easily sneak in. Same can be said if you have weak spots or are battling disease or damage from insects.
I am the neighborhood weed witch. As I am walking through the neighborhood, I will pull any and every weed I can see (if possible). I have so many neighbors that don't care about their lawns which is frustrating. The ones I care about are the neighbors on each side of me. I get my lawn treated by a lawn company but they don't. Neither one of my neighbors care what I do to their lawns. My question is what can I buy online that will kill broadleaf weeds? I feel the box stores products don't get the job done. We have bermuda grass and live in Texas.
This video is an absolute MUST SEE for every Bermuda lawn owner in the southeast---especially in north Georgia. My limitless and sincere congratulations to the ALG for a short, sweet, and comprehensive tutorial which in eight minutes will save you eight hours of disappointment and frustration in every year of the rest of your life. Bravo, sir. Please keep up the informative, efficient, and meaningful standard you have set for yourself and for every other self-appointed guru of the grass.
Great content. I just subscribed. I’m in SC- should a fall application of pre-emergent be put down now or closer to the end of the month? Do you recommend a particular product?
Check out green cast soil temperature in Google. Enter your location and when you soil temps drop to 70 degrees for 2 or 3 days, apply a preemergent. As for products, decide if you rather granular or liquid. I Iike prodiamine 65 wdg as a liquid. If you rather granular, then there are lots of granular products out there that I used and had great results. Lesco 007 or sunniland 007 is what I use but there are better products that spread out better. It all depends what your willing to spend. I personally do 2 preemergent apps, one at 70 degrees and one at about 55 degrees.
Yeah you just contradicted every other lawn guy here. Bermuda likes to be cut low and be cut frequently. One to two is absolute minimum, all yards are different but 3 per week is far better.
You have some solid advice….. but its hard for me to take advice from a guy that doesn’t wear jorts and white New Balance’s stained green push mowing his yard.
