Which is better, Bermuda or Fescue? In Nashville, that is the million dollar question. Ultimately, it depends on what is important to you. Do you prefer green grass all year long? Or do you prefer low maintenance? In my neighborhood we have a lot of people who complain about our Bermuda, especially when the cold weather comes around and it goes dormant. Hopefully, I can give a quick overview of the benefits and pitfalls of both and help you make the decision for yourself.
Spoiler Alert: I'm a Bermuda Fan-Boy!

I have Bermuda, my neighbor has fescue. He works on his lawn a lot yet still has patches of bare spots and weeds, much more weeds than I have. Neighbors compliment my lawn. Yes, it’s brown in winter but so are the trees. I over seeded with winter rye once. It looked very nice. I may do that again this year. We’ll see.

That's awesome! I don't mind the brown Bermuda in the winter either. Plus it gives me a chance to see where all my non-bermuda grass and weeds are. I may try Perennial Rye in a small area this winter just as a test.

The Lawn Shark It seemed that the winter rye helped keep the crabgrass at bay a little in the spring. I did the winter rye 2 years ago and plan to do it again this year.

I’m in southern Kansas here and contemplating switching my lawn to Bermuda from fescue. Our summers are getting hotter and more humid and the tidy close cut Bermuda offers is really intriguing.

@@TheLawnShark The Bermuda lawns around here are all common Bermuda and so not super Duper hearty. I’m thinking a hyper blend like GCI‘s or seedsuper stores would be a good way to go! I’ve got a 1000 square-foot section that is separated by concrete from the rest of my yard that I cleared off and I’m going to be putting down some Kentucky blue grass this fall. Depending how it comes in I might go ahead and throw in a little bit of Bermuda next year as well. If all goes well maybe I should do the extra 7000 ft.². Thanks for the good points on the video!

I am in Brentwood TN and have an 80% Bermuda lawn. I like the look of thick fescue much better but it's going to be much easier to go full Bermuda. I can also spot weeds much easier. I have a sprinkler system and won't use as much water with Bermuda which is nice. Bermuda also does well at shorter lengths, so I can give my lawn a nice golf fairway look. To kill off the Bermuda and go full fescue would be one hell of a project and I don't feel like sinking thousands of dollars into it right now....maybe someday.
@TheLawnShark

People spend a lot of money trying to kill Bermuda only to find out you can't. I have learned to embrace it and really do love it. That being said, I am experimenting with Perennial Ryegrass for winter application and have really liked it. I will post an update video very soon.

My tall fescue turnt brown looks kinda dormancy not sure but it’s about 95 degrees here in California is tall fescue a all season grass or just cool season?
@TheLawnShark
@TheLawnShark 3 года назад
It's mostly cool season. When it gets too hot it stops growing and goes dormant. Just try to keep it watered on a regular basis and it should survive through the heat. In any case, fescue is not self propagating and needs to be over-seeded regularly.

I live in NC, so I'm kinda in that transition zone, too. Until this year, I honestly didn't know anyone in the area that even had Bermuda. No one in my neighborhood, that I know of has it. But a friend of mine has purchased a new house this year and bermuda grass was installed in their yard. She's somewhat of a perfectionist so it will be interesting to see her reaction when it goes dormant. Around here, fescue stay green pretty much year round although it will tend to go dormant during the summer. And you are right about mowing and maintenance of fescue. Crazily, I've lived here the majority of my life and really only now learning about maintaining a fescue lawn. Working on getting the yard back into shape as I'm planning to move back to my hometown in a few years.
@TheLawnShark

Well, best of luck to you in getting that lawn in shape. Fescue is a bit finicky, but it sure is beautiful when taken care of properly. Unfortunately my new lawn does not have Bermuda, at least not yet. Trying some new things to see how it works out. Thank you for the comment! I really enjoy getting feedback!

That whole deal is a real dilemma for a transitional zone like Nashville. I subscribed and have a question for you....for Tennessee and North Carolina, it tends to be hilly - which means erosion can be a serious concern. Which of the two grasses will do a better job with erosion, tall fescue or bermuda??
@TheLawnShark
@TheLawnShark Год назад
Thanks for subscribing! And great question... for erosion it will definitely be Bermuda because of the way it grows with rhizomes, which will help retain soil in place. That being said. If there is any shade then Bermuda will not do well and Fescue would be a better choice. Hope this helps!

This is interesting. I live in North Carolina (RDU) area. My newly built neighborhood seeded the lawns with Bermuda grass. I wanted no part of that weed grass, so I killed it off and seeded my lawn with tall fescue. My lawn looks so much better than my neighbors. Plus my next door neighbor is constantly spraying his yard with weed killer. I love doing yard work, so in the fall, I've seeded my lawn with perennial rye grass seeds. So yes, I'm cutting grass year round.

This is accurate, grew up in the transition zone, house a grew up in Bermuda, house I own now tall fescue. Bermuda comes back every year with zero anything, no fertilizer, no aeration ect. Fescue is all about how you treat it here. Looked like garbage the first summer I moved in, now I've started fertilizing and watering, and de-thatching, and scarifying, but plot twist. I'm going to try to be the first person to overseed Bermuda with tall fescue, I don't care what happens. The transition zone is a land of where you can't plant any breed of grass, but can also plant any grass you want according to others, zero youtube video's out there about it ima try

Actually, this was right after a soil test and the pH was right where it needed to be. I cannot, however, attest to the other lawn's pH. The reason my Bermuda was turning brown was because it was getting colder and going dormant, not because of the pH level. The purpose of this video was to show that each grass type has it's pros and cons. Thanks

I am a fan to fescue grass because it's almost like native to Georgia... It's everywhere even on the side of the roads.. but one type of grass sir that u didn't bring up is Winter Rye grass.... Can I pls hear ur options on Winter Rye and how a person should spread that in there yard around September or October?? Thanks
@TheLawnShark
@TheLawnShark 4 года назад
I use winter rye sparingly. I use it when I am planting another grass, like fescue, because it germinates quickly and does a good job retaining soil while other grasses germinate. It will die as soon as it gets in the upper 80's, which in my mind is no big deal because the dead and decaying plant adds nitrogen to the soil. That being said, I am not a fan of the look of Winter Rye because it's a thicker blade and the green is not as rich as Fescue, Perennial Rye, Kentucky Bluegrass, or Bermuda. It's a good temporary grass, nothing more. Hope this helps.Thanks for the question!
