I've never been much of a Sandy Duncan fan, but she puts this number to bed! Her singing is wonderful, but her dancing is unbelievable. She is animated, alive and open. Just perfect in this role.
GOOD NEWS is such an underrated musical that needs to be revived!!! This show holds a very special place in my heart. It was one of the first full scale musicals that I ever performed in at school. It's one I would love to revisit and reprise performing all those beloved songs.
DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson are also a bit underrated, though their lives were featured in a movie 'The Best Things In Life Are Free", released in the 1950s, starring Dan Dailey, Ernest Brognine, and Gordon MacRae. (I think Turner Classic Movies should show this film).
Whenever I hear The Varsity Drag I think of the 1947 movie Good News with June Allyson (1917 - 2006) and Peter Lawford (1923 - 1984) ... tough act to follow, but Sandy gave a fantastic performance ...
Is this performance for a special event or charity fundraiser of some sort because I can’t find any information via google about this performance? It is so great though!
Musical Comedy Tonight is a serious attempt to explain just how the American musical grew up. The show's host and creator, Sylvia Fine Kaye, is a songwriter (for her husband Danny) and a teacher (at the University of Southern California and Yale). Her TV special is a canny amalgam of entertainment and history. She proves a funny and charismatic hostess! 1 - MUSICAL COMEDY TONIGHT - 1979 - SYLVIA FINE KAYE REMEMBERS GOOD NEWS, OKLAHOMA, ANYTHING GOES, COMPANY.
