Except ROse's turn was about getting hers back and I am telling you is about the lowest point of someone's life before she gives up. But it is the big aria for the show like and I am telling you
my favorite thing is that she was so sick, producers were telling her she shouldn't perform. but, she insisted, fucking slayed and got one of the longest standing ovations in tony history :)
I think she should be commended for saving that performance even though she is clearly very sick and adjusting her voice where necessary...she is a true broadway star.
jamesthemaniac i respectfully disagree don’t get me wrong, bernadette is my favorite mama rose by far, however it just sounds really sour to my ear to hear the harsh “ eeeee” at the end . i love when she sings the “ miss gypsy rose lee” i would have loved to hear that e sound at the end . Thanks for coming to my ted talk 😂😂
@@laurenbecerra1585 I agree! I am 99% if the time a stalwart advocate for pure vowels. This song is the 1%. I think a pure vowel takes the listener out of the madness and back to a world of technical singing and vowel placement.
The funny part about this is she actually had bad cold during this performance so for what she was able to accomplish while being sick is a testament to her showmanship!!! The show must go on!!!
Even if she was sick, it went along with her character: she was a mother fighting for her children and showing the world she can do anything, and boy has Bernadette done everything!!
Bernadette and Patti are both Broadway Legends. Stop comparing the two. Bernadette was in fact sick when she did the Tonys that year. They both have original voices.
Not comparing performers. Comparison is for the Mama Rose role. That is reasonable to compare. There are many to compare, but whoever is the best? Well that is subjective
I would bet every cent I have that today, over ten years later, she could drop everything and perform this again and STILL get a standing ovation. This woman is a living legend.
This is the one Rose's Turn that I find truly electrifying. The emotion (hurt, disbelief, anger, defiance, self questioning) are written so vividly on her face and are in perfect balance with the gestures, movement, and musical timing/singing/speaking. A very fine actress, Ms. Peters and a tour-de-force in this role, one which others might think she was miscast for but in fact she was "born to play."
arthistoryliterature If you want to see an amazing tour-de-force performance of Mama Rose, get yourself to London by November and see Imelda Staunton. I saw it twice and would see it again if I could. I have read that Sondheim said that IS's version is his favorite and I understand why. I don't believe Mama Rose has to have a huge voice-what she has to have is the ability to sing and act in such a way that we are left understanding (in a limited way because in real life Mama Rose was much darker) the narcissism of this character, the fear she engendered, the breakdown, and yet still somehow be able to feel something for her. It gave me chills. Her performance at the end of the first act of "Everything's Coming Up Roses"-I was speechless. Her facial expressions, the way she grabs Louise as if she were her lifeline with no understanding of anyone else but herself-it was so, so fine. If she doesn't win an Olivier for it I will be shocked.
+auntdj111 couldn't agree with you more! I saw Gypsy in London last month and was absolutely mesmerized! Imelda Staunton's performance was one of the best live performances I've had the honour of watching. Absolutely spectacular. I hope she wins an Olivier!
Ari Mazur-Mathieu I'm so glad someone else I 'know" saw this show and felt the same! It was spectacular wasn't it? I wish they would film it but copyright issues abound I guess. I hope she wins the Olivier as well! I'm sure she will perform, and it will be great, but for those who haven't been able to see the whole show it won't have the same impact at all. I think she will win, but if she didn't, it wouldn't change a thing about how I feel-I would just think she got robbed! P.S. Just saw your channel-you have a wonderful gift-I wish you much success and joy in performing.
For some reason, though, I still prefer Bernadette Peters in the role, even though on first glance she would indeed have been "miscast" by any measure for the role of Mama Rose. Why? Because she's so vulnerable despite the seething, stored up, fierce, shaking-with-fear feelings, especially when she beats her chest. She seems like a little girl as well as a mother. Maybe it is subjective, but I did feel from watching a BBC video of the Imelda Staunton-starring show that her Mama Rose was simply louder and more unpleasant, without the layers of vulnerability peeled off in Peters's version of "Rose's Turn," i.e., Staunton portrayed Mama Rose in more an Electra/Greek tragedy mode. I could much more for Peters's Mama Rose, both the speechless impotence and devastated vulnerability and then spoken/sung lashing out at her fate. Peters was so small (Staunton is of course of small physical stature as well), and when she was stamping her feet and gesticulating with her doll-like arms, I felt there was so much more pathos than in Staunton's "Rose's Turn."
The great thing about this piece is that it is SO well written that a actor can play a little. There are so many wonderful interpretations of it and they are all great. Some people prefer the angry, over the top. Some prefer the vulnerable layers Bernadette adds here. I personally love them all. It's difficult to "judge" a performance of a piece of music without seeing the entire piece of theatre. I was privileged to see this production and loved her in the role. She played it quite different than any other actress I have seen do it. Isn't that what acting is? Cheers Bernie...you rocked it.
+Brent Fabian Rayburn You said it exactly how it is. This song has so many different interpretations because of how well it's written. And there is no "Right way" necessarily.
That’s a perfectly accurate observation. Rose’s Turn is such an accumulative number that to truly appreciate a performance of it, you need to see every step of Rose’s journey. Again, I love your comment.
My favorite thing about Bernadette Peters is that she always lets everything be motivated by her acting choices. Even if that sometimes means sacrificing sounding beautiful and perfect. It makes you really feel EVERYTHING! I'm in love.
People Hugh Jackman was on Broadway at the time. The hair is for his role ...I thing "the boy from oz " or something. ALSO, YES Peters was sick, LUNG INFECTION ( I think it collapsed at one point) that got reall bad right before she was meant perform that night. People were scared for her health as it was weeks of hearing how I'll she was. She had missed so many shows already but wanted to sing at the awards as it was nominated (because of her and the cast) so she asked her doctor to overload her on antibiotics and immune boosters so she could preform although she was told it could send her in relapse. B. Peters talent and voice are legend as deep/squeak raspy powerful. She pushed through. It's amazing.
I love Bernadette Peters; I was pre-flighting an entertainment system on an aircraft once while they were pre-boarding. I looked up from the VCR and saw this beautiful woman and blurted out, "You look exactly like Bernadette Peters" Without skipping a beat, she flashed me a gracious smile, and purred; "What a coincidence . . . I am Bernadette Peters" I tried to contain myself, but started laughing, she gave a sparklie eyed wink and with a chuckle took her seat in first class. I mumbled, "I love your work" and nervously finished my work on the VCR. She was gracious and kind during the stress of traveling - I walked on a cloud for the rest of the day.
Hugh Jackman’s long hair Bernadette Peters (At all) Then…her deep voice “why did I do it” This number was acted and sang in a way that is unmatched. LOVE BERNADETTE PETERS
Bernadette is amazing !! She was ill that night n she did it n brought the house down . Broadway actors are the most talented n so under appreciated . They do it for the love of the art. I love live theatre !!
I loved Bernadette's version of Gypsy, she may not have the biggest voice but she makes up for it in her acting and emotion. She will always be a favorite of mine.
I saw Bernadette's production in NYC when I went with my high school drama class. Personally, I enjoy her rendition of Rose far more than any of the other big name actresses. As with every role, the actor brings something slightly different to it and Bernadette's was truly amazing. I felt her Rose was always on the brink of despair, she wasn't the super tough stage mom like Patti Lupone, but a mother that had dreams always had to sublimate for others, it felt much more tender.
Incredible! It STILL breaks my heart to know she lost the award - I saw her do this role three times - and her character's complete and utter heartbreak and breakdown is just... devastating.
I'd read she was sick on that day but still she performed... I've heard the original recording of the song and she sounds better. But as far as solely the acting is concerned I love her interpretation and the power she brings into this part. Some people say she was too pretty/young/cute for the part, I say she was a great choice.
She wasn't only sick, she was actually strongly advised not to go on stage under any circumstances. She was exhausted and battled a serious infection, all while performing with high fever. She's awesome!
I love seeing the different interpretations of the song because it really is a mental breakdown set to music but every plays what the mental breakdown is I love Bernadette’s and Pattis the most bc they really contrast but both work so well in my opinion
This is not - I repeat: THERE IS NOT another Broadway performer who can interpret Sondheim's lyrics with such utter perfection as Bernadette. Every moment - every word of the song is a complete acting piece. This is why the audience gave her a standing ovation. It's a mammoth piece because it was written for Ethel Merman who had a BIIIG voice but was kind of limited on the acting front. I think if we saw Ethel's performance today it would look extremely dated. Bernadette is the perfection of how to act a musical theatre song.
The Merman stuff is not really true. You can find the scene with Gypsy in the dressing room AND Merman's Rose's Turn on YT and there isn't anything lacking about her performance. The amazingly talented but often bitchy Arthur Lawrence spread negative stuff about Merman but the critics and the audiences loved her performance in this show. Rose's Turn isn't so tough to sing "technically", what makes it amazing is that it is an acting challenge. Peters is terrific as Mama Rose and she brings completely different colors to the role, like Lansbury (amazing as Rose) and Lupone).
***** I agree. Though Bernadette had one interpretation of Rose, Patti did something entirely different. It was darker and I love the fact that it hinted that Rose was maybe bipolar which might account for her need to push her children into the limelight. It's always interesting to see different approaches to the character.
This is proof that I love this woman. On this performance: "...she had been suffering from a severe respiratory infection and had missed several performances of the show. Originally, the producers did not want her to perform live at the Tonys for fear of her damaging her vocal chords. She refused to cancel and insisted on performing live. She got through the song and received a 2-minute standing ovation, one of the longest in Tony History."
It must be hard seeing such a lush healthy head of hair (especially on a man) when your own is dry, brittle and lifeless. Maybe you should try Toni&Guy instead of DIY.
I have been doing and studying proffesional theater since I was 9 years old... This is the best performance of ´`Roses Turn`` That I have ever seen. Bernadette just brings it all to the foreground!!!!! I know it is not a competition, but she leaves Ethel and all others who have done the role in the dust....I mean google the others and none of them have this magic..Bernadette!!! I truly love you. You my darling are simply the best.
That last part when she stumbles forward a little bit and then wraps her arms around herself is so powerful. I love that very last squeal the brass section makes at the very end, very very powerful.
It's crazy how different the awards are now. Here it was just her singing alone. Now it's all about flashy dances and having as many people on the stage as possible
This is my favorite performance of my favorite musical piece. No matter how many times I see or listen to it, the final notes pull tears from my eyes--I can't fight it.
Many years ago I took my teenage daughter out of school for a Mom-Daughter day trip to NYC. We got last-minute day-of-show tickets to Gypsy, THIRD ROW. After all these years I still feel the magic and can't believe our luck. Forever grateful for that experience.
Holy god this is spectacular. Bernadette Peters can so effortlessly respect musicality while not sacrificing the artistry in her acting. This is... Yes.
I love this so much. The determination in her eyes when she surges forward... It's so inspiring. And then she proceeds to give a performance that makes goosebumps rise on your skin and your heart rate to rise... YES.
Simply astonishing. I was lucky enough to see her performance on Broadway, and like this Tony performance, her take of this classic is heartbreakingly simply perfection… the emotional range she brought to that show blew me away, and simply watching this clip, brought it all back, and right now I am a teary eyed emotional wreck… wow, bravo
that DESERVED a standing ovation! that was incredible. i first heard of Peters when she was on Smash and she was pretty good, but now i know just how talented she really is. and also i first heard the song on Glee (i'm 17 what do you expect?), but this is OBVIOUSLY so much better!
An absolutely peerless performance !!!!!!!!!!! A performance that grabbed me by the proverbial balls, shook them around and gave them a full-on yank. Absolutely peerless!
What an extraordinary talent. This is one of those jewels that is lucky to have been recorded for an audience that will be astonished for years to come.
My college roommate works for the Shubert Organization and he called me after the last preview and said she was "underwhelming". And she was in the pink the night I suffered through this. She is simply not a good enough actress for the role. Was she sick when every NY critic reviewed her? All were negative except for that lunacy Ben Brantley wrote which should have lost him his job...a school boy's valentine.
THIS IS WHAT BROADWAY AND ENTERTAINMENT IS ALL ABOUT!!! BRAVO! MISS PETERS, YOU'VE BEEN A SHOW STOPPER ALL YOUR LIFE! A 'SUPER TROUPER' AND AN UTTER PRO! AS GOOD AS ONE CAN POSSIBLY GET! I HOPE YOU NEVER STOP BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE!!! FROM A LIFELONG ADMIRER!!! XXXOOO
While I've heard others sing this song "prettier", this is the first time that someone has made me just tear up and snatched my breath when she breaks down. I wish I had seen this with her in the role. So much hurt anger... The sign of a true star, going on sick as a dog and still blowing the socks off the audience...
Bernadette Peters is absolutely BRILLIANT. Her acting is completely sensational - I've never seen someone convey such strong emotion in any of the roles she's played as well as she has.
I just love this woman's performances. No trashing anybody else to say that simple truth, she's wonderful. Everyone I've seen do this role, sing that song, act that act... has done their own twist and turns of it, their amazing performances bringing all of their gifts to bear in it. You gotta know how stripped bare someone has to be to pull this thing off. Bernadette pulls it off strong.
my god, bernadette is SO beautiful. she looks fantastic. And I think she was SO underrated in this role -- she handled it with the fragility of a film actress, I loved her in it.
From IMDB trivia: Bernadette Peters had been suffering from a severe respiratory infection and had missed several performances of the show. Originally, the producers did not want her to perform live at the Tonys for fear of her damaging her vocal chords. She refused to cancel and insisted on performing live. She got through the song and received a 2-minute standing ovation one of the longest in Tony History.
