June 10th, 2006. Boxing Legend Bernard Hopkins takes on “The Magic Man” Antonio Tarver as Tarver looks to defend his IBO Light Heavyweight title. Going into the fight Tarver had a record of 24-4 while Hopkins 46-4-1. Tarver was 3-1 favorite against Hopkins.
In May 2004, Tarver shockingly handed the great Roy Jones Jr. his 2nd career loss via TKO2. Tarver knocked out Captain Hook in the 2nd round with his best punch - a straight left hand flush on Jones Jr’s chin. It was named Knockout of the Year by Ring Magazine. With this win, Tarver won numerous titles; the IBO, IBA, WBF, WBA and WBO Light Heavyweight straps. He also avenged his controversial loss to Jones Jr in their first meeting back in November 2003 with this stunning victory.
He would lose his IBO title via a competitive SD against Glen Johnson in December of the same year, and recapture the title in a rematch via UD in June 2005. He also successfully defended the title once again over Roy Jones Jr. via UD in October 2005.
On July 2005, Bernard Hopkins was upset by a young upcoming Jermaine Taylor as he lost his WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF titles via SD; officially ending his 10 year undefeated streak in the Middleweight division. He would again lose to Taylor in December of the same year via UD. Hopkins then makes a move up to fight Tarver as his 1st opponent in the 175 pound weight division.
Despite being the naturally bigger fighter and a 3-1 favorite against Hopkins, Tarver was dominated from start to finish and unable to significantly hurt Hopkins. Tarver had made a side bet of 250,000 before this fight, stating that he would finish Hopkins in the 5th round. Ironically, Hopkins knocks him down in the 5th; the same round which Tarver predicted his victory. The winnings went to Hopkins’ Make A Way foundation. This is also the 1st time in which Tarver was knocked down as a pro.
Interestingly, Hopkins had a record of 9-0 against southpaws in his career before this thus this victory makes him 10-0 against southpaws. Hopkins was also awarded The Ring Light Heavyweight crown with this spectacular win.
Final punch stats shows that Hopkins landed more than twice as many power punches and total punches over Tarver. Towards the end of the fight, Tarver’s eyes were badly swollen.
Hope you guys enjoy this highlight of one of Hopkins’ most brilliant performances!
In about 1 week, The Alien will be taking on hard hitting Irishman Joe Smith Jr as his last fight. “The Irish Bomber” shocked the boxing world with his unbelievable knockout over Andrzej Fonfara in June of this year. Will Hopkins put on yet another brilliant performance against a young blood?
And don’t forget to comment, rate and subscribe! Thanks guys and keep punching!

I would call it "The Dirty Box Style" They will hold you by the hip and hit you, hold your arm and hit you,not technical considered illegal,but very frustrating for the other fighters as they lose control because of the unusual style,that's when guys like B-Hop will capitalize when another fighter loses control and can't control himself as he makes mistakes, Guys who have that style like B-Hop will make them pay for those mistakes. Are also call that style "The Dirty Box Style" one Sweet Science of boxing styles.

Tarver has always annoyed me. BHop went in there and completely broke the bigger, younger man down. People were trying to say that Hopkins basically bullied some souped up welterweights in Trinidad and De La Hoya. That’s b.s., because Hopkins didn’t outmuscle those guys. Hopkins set both of them up beautifully with traps. But when Hopkins turned in this performance against Tarver to take his title a lot of that nonsense discussion went away. BHop is a highly intelligent and very crafty fighter. He reads his opponents better than anyone and he sets them up beautifully. By his early 40’s his athleticism and physical gifts were diminished but he continued to win championships with his ring IQ. The Pavlik, Pascal, and Cloud fights were all won with his mind. Brilliant fighter.

There are a lot of strong points about why Roy had a tough time with Tarver and why Bernard made it look easy. First of all I would have to agree for the fact that when Roy came back down from Heavyweight he wasn't the same and during his first fight with Tarver you can tell he was sluggish and wasn't as fast. Also I watched and studied all of Roy's fights and he did have a lot of flaws and the only weapon he had was his speed. Where as Bernard his boxing and tactics began to evolve over the years and he still managed to give boxers like Target, Palvlix and even Calzaghe problems.

As a south paw, Tarver should have been doing what B-hop did, lead with the Jab. Since the position of a south paw jab is superior. But instead he was leaning in more frequently and letting B-hop control the inside. B-hop on the other hand was moving around more efficiently and had more punching options to fire from. Even at that age guy moves amazing.

LV Herbo I think that's an excuse that's used too often for Roy. He was excellent in his prime, but he he still had flaws. How can you blame the Tarver KO on weight loss, when the first Tarver fight went 12 rounds? He then had another 6 months after the first Tarver fight for his body to get used to 175 again. The Tarver KO was over a year after the Ruiz fight.

@Jay White "That's how you beat up young punks" LOL SOME of y'all old timers are OG's and then others just masquerade as some tough guy who wants to see if he "still got it". If/when one of these young dudes get in y'all ass then u'll be quick to pull out the senior citizen card while ur explaining to the police how innocent u were. Yesterday and today I tried the Hopkins pull counter. He does it with his right palm up and out (defending the head and it's closer to the target ) coming down as he generates the ass for the punch, it's much stronger than a regular cross.

I rate this as Hopkins best win, may not have been his most exciting but to move up 2 weight classes and put on an absolute clinic like that, against a very technically sound fighter like that , it’s hard to top. Nobody shut down tarver like that. Tarver was a very solid defender and Hopkins set traps and hit cleaner and more often than any other fighter had. I actually was cheering for tarver in this fight but Hopkins made sure that I had nothing to cheer for.

Just schooled Tarver. Tarver was just a tough southpaw brawler with decent skill. I remember him saying he'd KO Hopkins in the 5th, but got dropped in the 5th himself.

Bernard definitely surprised me! I more or less knew he would win, but I didn't think he would dominate Tarver completely!
@rudimerm7686
@rudimerm7686 Год назад
@@jeffjacksonboxing Same here. I thought Bernard would do good, but not the way he made Tarver look like an amateur. You can tell Naazim and Hopkins studied Tarver thoroughly. Everything that Tarver did to Roy (trapping against the ropes and clinching with dirty boxing) did not work on Hopkins. I was also surprised on how much stronger Hopkins was than Tarver when they tied up. The fight was also one of the most gratifying victories that I can remember. Tarver thought he was way better than he actually was. To see him get schooled was great.

@lawreneph
@lawreneph 4 года назад
@@kojakarmstrong7898 Roy actually beat Tarver in the first fight. I think that 2nd fight which he got dropped was too soon of a rematch for Roy at that age of his career 6 months between 2 fights. Tarver fought the same fighters for 3 years straight. He loss against some of the same people he won against. Bhop dominated him though.

Mabey the most impressive victory of B hops illustrious career considering Tarver was the best Light Heavy in the game and B hop a career Middleweight and he hurt Tarver but let him off the hook. Believe he could've finished Tarver had he pressed the issue there. Hopkins is a legend and number 2 on my list all time behind Robinson but ahead of Hagler and Monzon. Great fighter.
