B.A. Zimmermann (1918-1970) was a Germany composer who grew up in a rural catholic community. His music was made by a wide range of methods, such as quotation, and he wrote series of works for unaccompanied solo instruments, and experimented with various techniques to produce a variety of sounds in his compositions. In 1955, his daughter Barbara died soon after her birth. For memorial he composed this sonata, and in reminiscence of the Alban Berg violin concerto. The final section of the sonata contains a quotation from the chorale "Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ"; the previous sections can be regarded as gradual crystallization of the chorale theme with dazzling sounds, waltz, and repeated materials emerging alternatively like his daughter's short appearing towards the final conclusion of the chorale.
