Sanders doesn't understand modern railroading, and he doesn't understand the need to make a profit. Precision Scheduled Railroading has NOTHING to do with safety. In fact, it probably has made railroading safer! Sanders is clueless. But he's a communist, so I'm not surprised at his demands. Companies don't exist to hire people. They exist to provide a service and make a profit. To do that, they hire people, but they shouldn't be forced to hire more than they need.
Taking care of one's employees to the standard they truly deserve cuts into the semi annual bonus guys. Can't have that. what would be the point of all those soul destroying compromises made on the journey here?
The CEO's facial expression after Sanders asks him if Norfolk Southern will cover the health care needs of the people in East Palestine @ 6:05 is priceless. You can tell how the very thought of paying the costs of their negligence pained him to hear. Big business is accostomed to getting off scott free with no consequences. That's why he gave another vague non-answer to that question.
well he phrased the question terribly.. he phrased it as if Norfolk now is responsible for paying every person in that towns medical costs for the rest of their lives. Even if they get some disease or accident that has nothing to do with the train accident. Thats why he looked that way and refused to commit. Bernie Sanders is kind of a dunce
@@devinmichaelroberts9954 The CEO's answer is what was phrased terribly. Only a dunce would think that the question insinuated that the railroad should be responsible for the entire town's medical bills for the rest of their lives. Its clear the inquisition is related to health issues that arise from the polluted water caused from the company's negligence which caused the train to derail. There's nothing worse than people who shill for greedy corporations.
@@devinmichaelroberts9954 "One last issue, uh last question. You talked about covering the needs of the people of East Palestine. Does that include paying for their healthcare needs? All of their healthcare needs?" That was a fair question. They're the ones whose train was on fire for approximately 20 miles before it derailed in East Palestine. CBS uploaded the video. Perhaps you didn't see it.
My Son, daughter in law, and my 3 grandchildren living in east Palestine need to be insured of all of Healthcare needs . As of FEBRUARY 3 THEY are on a journey of uncertainty. Please do right by them..... let's put people before profit.
It is so sad that politicians like DeWine and other Republicans took big donations from that railroad company, allowing them to be negligent in the safety of the communities they go through. My heart goes out to all the families in East Palestine who are suffering, and they deserve to be compensated in all forms. We need politicians who will look out for the working class.
@@zulmavillalba6137 let go of the partisanship. Both parties are responsible for this. Both are against the workers and the people. Look how the “pro-union” democrats quickly voted to prevent railroad workers from striking, preventing them from getting the paid sick days they wanted. When will you figure out they’re all on the same team? And it’s not the team the people are on?
@@zulmavillalba6137 Biden and the railroad said they could not strike because we don't have gas for the truckers it should never be about politics but the citizens that got hurt but go head blame the only person who showed up why Biden went to Ukraine not Ohio this is sad that we are Americans but care how you vote guess blue might not want to have any thing happen to there state stupidity
Precision rail scheduling is dehumanizing and it should be illegal. The quality of employees' lives is directly related to the quality of life the communities along their rails experience.
I respect how Bernie doesnt act rude or "forceful" which usually comes across as senators trying to get viral video of them "giving it to the man" so to speak. Or attempting to look like they are fighting extra hard for us. Bernie is calm, respectful but also pointed.
@@fuckcensorship69 he's not worth that much actually for someone his age.. my father was blue collar but made some wise investments and is probably net worth around 2 million. Doesnt mean anything since most of that 2 million is the home he has going up in value. Same for Bernie.. he has 2 homes both of which are most of his net worth. But I take your point. Sanders also has an embarrsingly low effetiveness.. below average when weighed against other senators. Meaning in his long career he has contributed about 500 amendments to bills. It should be 3 times that much.
Help the people of E Palestine Ohio first !!!!!!! And what about all the poor animals. Norfolk southern RR should start a fund for wildlife preservation to help the surviving animals thrive and mate 😢 this accident coulda been prevented and wasn’t. Sorry doesn’t fix a damn thing … 🙏
When the CEO said "We'll do what is right." Does that mean to increase bribes to Senators to help Norfolk Southern avoid responsibility? I would be curious as to how many Senators in that room have already taken pay offs.
THAT is EXACTLY what is happening. Literally, I promise. In so doing they're also going with a do more with less attitude. Use unproven technology that we know fails, increase workloads to more than any reasonable human can manage, and when you get called on it or sued for it...."we don't retaliate" and "we will use more technology to fix this" and "you're just resisting change."
that is not the case, they furloughed employees by seniority which lower seniority employees were let go. They did cut too short as there were nearly 60 freight carmen/inspectors when I hired in over 30 years ago to less then 20 at its low last year. We now are hiring several but I imagine we won't get back to 30. We shall see
As you all can see, thats a Big Fat No on any kind of benefits for the Workers of Norfolk. Now as for the Big Wigs & the Share Holders their Money is Crispy, it don't Jingle !!
Bernie knows how to be direct & is used to dealing with this pathetic CEOs. Placing profits in front of public safety and employee rights should be criminal! Pathological greedy CEOs abound.
they aint ever going to put that toxic genie back in the bottle. whoever was responsible for burning that crud instead of containing it and cleaning it up needs to be locked up and have the key thrown away. let me know when those in charge say they can unring a bell.
I like Bernie Sanders, he asks straight questions and expects straight answers. Alan Shaw Norfolk Southern CEO definitely sounded like a politician, talked a lot and said nothing.
Bernie is the man he's pushing for fairness in our citizens and how they work this is a We the People Nation we need to make citizens more important than corporations it is the quality of life of all citizens that make a nation great not when there's just a few super rich
It’s so nice to see the CEO being held responsible. It’s time the public knows how much these how much these CEOs’ don’t care about the public & will continue to make cuts to maximize their profits!
I had sick days and vacation days when I worked for the red cross long time ago, and sick days, which I never used, would build up, kept me afloat when I had to have two major surgeries in one year. then they took that away and made it just PTO.
I’m so sorry. That is disheartening and disgusting for them to do. I’ve seen a few workplaces do this with sick days and it’s not okay. I’m glad your two surgeries were covered by sick days.
This is the CEO? Just say “yes, as CEO I am committed to guaranteeing 7 paid sick days to all employees”. Why is he fighting that?? They don’t care about their employees AT ALL.
Corporations have to stop using cost cutting -- especially employing people -- as a profit margin. IT"S WHY WE HAVE THE MAGA CULT -- EMPLY PEOPLE FOR GOD SAKES!!!
Why do I get the felling the losses in revenue from all these derailments still won't come out of the CEO, board members' and fat cats' bonuses at the end of the year. They'll pass the funk later down the line onto the consumer who had nothing to do with it and blame the insurance for premium increases, levied fines and pending law suits. What a mess! Maybe if they suspend their license they'll be more cautious.
Congress and the Democrats in it had their chance to act to guarantee paid sick days to the railroad workers but they voted to change the law to prevent them from striking instead. I’m so sick of these hypocrites. This hearing is all performative. Nothing will change because nothing has to change because Congress let the workers down.
Many vague answers. Instead of specific commitments asked for by senators, Shaw repeatedly said, We want to "make it right." VERY non-specific. What assurance for the people whose town is basically ruined.
>.< *WHY* is it that no one can answer a simple yes or no question any more? Don't they understand that the very moment anything comes out of their mouths *except* yes or no that they have just destroyed their OWN credibility?
America is concerned with Norfolk Southern doing maintenance on their equipment. Bernie's worried about employee benefits. Disgusting. This companies negligence destroyed an entire town of 5,000 people. The event takes priority over negotiation of employee benefits.
I dislike the way this situation has been presented. To the best of my knowledge, major corporations do not provide a separate "sick day" leave benefit. You are provided with a certain number of PTO (Paid Time Off) days per calendar year and the amount is sometimes based on seniority or time with the company. These days are used for whatever reason. I think that the RR employees were asking for a separate "sick time" benefit. The reason why many companies dropped the sick time benefit is that it was virtually impossible to monitor that the employee was indeed dealing with an illness and was unable to work. One company that I once worked for had a requirement that if you took a sick day, you needed confirmation from a doctor or other health care provider. The number of sick days being claimed went down dramatically as a result of that policy. I remember at one time the employees at RR companies were called for jobs based on seniority. That is the most senior employees were called for work first. An employee also had the ability to "mark off" from being called and they were then placed at the bottom of the call list. I do not know if this work practice still exists for unionized RR employees.
What was that new policy? Oh, yeah, precision scheduled derailroading. Saves money too. Fewer crew on board, less equipment maintenance, and don't even think about maintenance of way.
Mr. Shaw. You seem to be avoiding the questions, and thus instantly change the subject. Mr. Shaw, when in restaurants, have you been having difficulty obtaining the specific food that you want, after a restaurant waiter asks you what it is that you wish to order. Do you communicate with the waiters in the same manner as in here and now, when ordering food. What we are just trying to do here, is determine whether or no you are capable of actually answering questions.
pass a bill requiring minimun # of paid sick leave days across the board for all employees that restricts scheduling changes and on call nonsense for PT workers single payer healthcare + extra benefits for hazardous jobs etc etc etc
The Teamsters had Sick Days in the late 1970’s . There are always trade offs in contract negotiations . Sometimes the Unions stand behind their members , way , way , behind them ! 71/23
