They were two sides of a coin though… he wrote the lyrics to almost all of those Elton John classics…. For Elton not to be grateful, that would have been bad.. Elton said in 1994 that they should both be in the Hall and they wait 27 years….😒
Well beyond time that Bernie was inducted. Congratulations Bernie your lyrics have been the theme running through my life and I suspect many others. You deserve all the accolades. Live long and keep writing those beautiful lyrics. ❤❤❤
Britain's answer to Rogers and Hammerstein! Teamwork is a powerful thing! Wonderfully captivating tunes, videos, and memories! The 1970s appeared to be Elton's finest decade. Wow! Cheers to them both! * Cav *
THE greatest song writer of all time! The way Bernie Taupin puts words, images, and stories together are pure genius! I have been a life long admirer since my teens! My very first concert was Elton John in the early 70s at McNichols Arena in Denver Co! Bernie Taupin played in Denver in the 90s and came to my place of work The Oxdord Aveda Spa/ Hotel in Denver. He was personally handing out flyers to tell people he was playing! ( I missed this opportunity on my day off!! 😢) However, this video is epic and I am so so happy to finally see his name in lights and being honored with this very well deserved Award!!! "My high Flying Bird" Bernie Taupin you are amazing.❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤
Fantastic. Elton and Bernie really brought home how deep their friendship and their work together are. Anyone who has not heard their early albums--Elton John through Honky Chateau--is missing out on unique, magnificent, cinematic, soulful music. Bless them
@mikeoakley7470 Oh, I totally think not! I do believe that the John-Taupin songwriting partnership is a true act of God! They're not just one-in-a-million, they're one in an eternity!! Sure, someone else could've written music to Bernie's incredible lyrics, and of course, Elton can and has written music to the words of others, but together, these two have been SO much more than the sum of their parts! To say that they bring out the best in each other's work is a gross understatement - together, they simply are The Best!!! 🌟🎶👑👑
Congrats Bernie for finally getting your due! Like he said, there’s no Elton without Bernie. And Sir Elton still got it singing Tiny Dancer. Can’t wait for his new album!
I eagerly awaited the 1973 😮release of Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road. I always appreciated seeing Bernie’s face there on the albums as prominent as the band members. Remarkably talented storyteller.
The RRHOF missed a trick by not inducting all six of them simultaneously. If Elton was the rocket man then Nigel Olsson (drums), Davey Johnstone (guitar) and Dee Murray (bass) were the rocket ship that propelled him to pop/rock superstardom in the early 70s. Phenomenal band.
Fantastic, I am an avid lyric writer as a hobby , his lyrics always intrigued me. This is the first time I notice Elton to have a more frail voice than he ever did, age is on for us all, he is still one of my most undesputed heroes, him and Bernie gave me a fantasy World of dreams , in fact they are the reason I moved to the US. In the early 80ties , at 13 years old I bought Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, that was it, I wanted to move to America, and I did. Thank you guys
Bernie and Elton have brought us all a lot of joy in their music for all these years. I am not sure what was transacting within the universe that brought the two together but it was pure alchemy.
Dear Bernie Taupin, Your lyrics and Elton John's music 🎵🎶 is The soundtrack 🎼🎧💖😻😍🤩👍🕯️🌹🌲❤️😄😺 of my life. I named my formerly feral🐾🐈 twin, youngest kitten, born under my 🏠 🏡 home: Bernie, after Bernard Hermann, you and two Saint Bernards/San Bernardinos( Two saintly men.🚫 Not the dogs). I always hoped I would see you at the Montecito Episcopal Church that I attended during the early 2000's, I did sit behind the late Tab Hunter, I believe.I later read in your lyrics that you are an athe8ist. How can someone given priceless talent and a precious ability to express oneself, not 🚫 believe that gift 🎁 was bestowed upon you by a hi8gher po8wer?!😮 I still love your poetry, nevertheless.✨🕯️🕊️🤍 PS: The other twin 🐈🐾 kitten born under my 🏠🏡 home was named Georgie, after Queen Mary's favorite son ( who died tragically in WW2, the same way as my great uncle) & also named after George Harrison, whom I once heard Paul McCartney refer to as "Georgie" on a sxm 📻 radio Beatles channel PM concert. I later learned your daughter shares the same name, different spelling. I know you will never read this but since I will never meet you, ✍️ writing this here will suffice.💌🎈
I was 7 in 1973 when "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was released. My aunt was a 20 something college student who insisted the album is almost like a religious experience and will be still talked about 50 years later. Well, the album is actually almost like a religious experience and here I am talking about it 50 years later. That album made me a lifelong Elton John fan at age 7. Thank you Elton, Bernie, Davey, Dee, Nigel, Ray.. 😊 ❤
I love Bernie's dig at Rolling Stones co-founder Jann Wenner and his sexist and racist comments about women and blacks in the music business not being worth his time to interview.
It's nice to actually say someday that deserves to be in the rock and roll hall of fame get there. There have been far too many Dolly Parton and Madonna moments. People that have absolutely no business in the rock and roll hall of fame.... While people like this are ignored.
It wasn't the piano at all. Elton uses a concert grand Yamaha to trigger digital piano sounds. What we hear is not coming from the acoustic piano, but rather a midi digital piano module. The sustain midi sensor connected to the acoustic Yamaha malfunctioned.
I filmed it off my tv?? Go and watch it on Disney plus if you’re that bothered. I’m sure many of those without the subscription are just happy to see it.
he ha the nerve to hit on Jan Wenner the man who started rolling stone magazine and the rock and roll hall of fame- hes never performed a day in his life. Bernie Taupin stinks
I don’t know whatever happened to having the best of everything why do they have a Yamaha piano there which I know is nice my sister owns one but why wouldn’t always be a Steinway and sons piano I’m sorry there’s no comparison
As a life long fan of Elton John ,i can not love him with out loving Bernie Taupin. Magnificant combination of heart and talent. The soundtrack of my life. Bravo Bernie , You absolutley deserve it🎶♥️
A lyrical genius, sometimes the star's collide and a partnership of magnificence emerges.. Lennon/McCartney...Taupin/John... equal's in changing music. I salute you Mr Taupin... we'll await your knighthood !!!!!
After those 2 speeches from those 2 geniuses then Elton sits down to sing "Tiny Dancer"...I was done! The tears just started falling. Wow. I'm 58 and from America, and these guys have been the background music of my entire life. There isn't a song they have written or sang that I can't attach a memory to. Love you both so so much, and thank you for being a part of MY life. Now let's get a well-deserved Nigel, Dee, and Davey of the band inducted, too, and we are set!
Same here,I am 58 also and Elton n Bernie have been at every turn!! So happy to be living with them in my life!! Seen Elton pretty many times and lucky enough to have taken my daughter and she has a liking for Elton as well.I wasn't as lucky as my hubby,he was Eltons limo driver for a concert and he and Elton went to a downtown bar afterwards and had drinks!!❤
I am from the Watts section of L.A., from a family of musicians. My dad and uncles played everything in the '60s and '70s. Tiny Dancer is one of my all-time favorites!
60 years old male-I had the same reaction...I was like why are the tears coming and i thought wow-he chose that song to honor Mr. Taupin and what they represented together and the obvious, that it was one of Mr. Taupin''s loves and I never made that connection before...It is all about the people-the material trappings are not what will be remembered or valued when we look back at the journey!
It is given that you cannot mention Elton without mention of Bernie. I think all of Elton's fans would agree. That Elton John and Bernie Taupin are a musical match made in heaven. They have a lyrical musical connection that goes on and on. Today Bernie is being recognized for his beautiful words that are the center of Elton's music. It is fitting Elton John would be the one to induct Bernie into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It is a full circle moment for both Elton & Bernie. One Elton & Bernie's fans rejoice with. Congratulations to Bernie Taupin 0n this well deserved award!
I was a driver in L.A., back in the late 2000s, and I had the pleasure of picking up and driving Mr. Taupin. On the drive, I had on a jazz station, and a trombone player's song came on. Right away he knew it was J.J. Johnson. I had all the respect in the world for him for knowing that! He knew music!
He looks a bit emotional after all these years!!!!!! Sir Elton John you have made our lives so complete with your music and Bernie’s lyrics! Your shows are amazing live!!!!!! Much love to you and Bernie!!!!!
Bernie and Elton are the best duo of all time. Better than Simon and Garfunkel. The songs they created have stayed with me my entire life. My 13 year old self was blown away when I heard Saturday Night's Allright for Fighting but the rest of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was even better than I could have imagined. I was a fan for life. Congratulations Bernie Taupin. Love your work and your work is much appreciated.
Thats about my story too,I was about 13,a immediately became a fan for life!! 45 years later, and he still sounds goosebumps down my body!! Lucky to have seen him many times in concert, each one as exhilarating as the first!❤
The leap from "Empty Sky" to the "Elton John" album had a lot to do with Producer Gus Dudgeon. Dudgeon knew exactly what was needed sound wise for Elton John's music. He was an important and integral part of the success. He is often forgotten. Just like George Martin helped The Beatles with their sound.
Absolutely. Dudgeon's ears were amazing. And Paul Buckmaster. And...the band he had. Where do you stop? That's why picking favorites from the crowd is very tricky and not easy to define and inherently limited and subjective. But they have a show and a museum to sell to the public. I don't deny the entertainment value of it all. So, whatever.
@@lavalp I actually really like "Empty Sky" and wouldn't change a thing about it. But I was happy with the new direction with subsequent albums especially the early to mid 1970s ones. Elton and Bernie were on fire during that period. But as you said "Dudgeon's ears were amazing" and he knew what he had in Elton John's musical abilities.
I have listened to all Elton’s and Bernie’s all early albums including Empty Sky darting in 1971 at 11 years old from my brother’s record collection and loved all of them ever since. Bernie is an incredible writer and should have been in The Writers Rock Hall of Shame at it’s inaugural.
Elton needed his own sound people there, the sound is awful. A bit of reverb on his vocals and on the piano would've made the world of difference and really lifted this. Speaking as a huge Elton fan here by the way, he is still amazing!
That's also the sound from the television, the television speakers... who knows what it sounded like at the event, you can't really judge it that well. But in a certain way you're right about the reverb on his voice. The sound on the last studio albums was a bit dry, so a little more reverb would have been better...
I think this recording was taken from a television set. You never will get authentic sound from a TV set. Finding the bottom is like finding an honest politician in Washington. It is going to be tough.
Thanks Bernie for mentioning Johnny Mercer. My Dad played in his band just after WW2. Hambone Kelley's was where he played a lot. He told me so many stories about his commute to work in Oakland to going to school in Sausalito and then playing with Johnny till 2AM at the club in Union Square.
I grew up listening to Elton John and on or in his album covers I loved reading the information contained and that's where I learned of Bernie Taupin's involvement. I loved this duo!
Long over due, should've had this decades ago. His humility to shun the limelight and watch his best mate get the plaudits without jealousy for more than 50 years is admirable. I'm not a fan of RARHOF but respect due for acknowledging Bernie's contribution.
Elton and Bernie, thank you for blessing our lives with your iconic and superb collaboration of creativity. You both have entertained millions of people for decades ❤❤
"Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" was our anthem in 1974, as a junior in high school, it fit our crazy asses to a "T"! Thank you Elton & Bernie for the timeless classics you have given us over the years and decades!
As a piano player, I can't imagine how badly Elton wanted to have a fit over his sustain pedal not working during his performance. He covered it up well, but man, what a bummer!
Elton and Bernie - These guys were the music of my life. Got to see them together on Elton's 60th B-day at MSG. How awesome would it have been to have Bernie sit on a stool at the the piano while Elton played for him. Somebody dropped the ball there.
Their story is such a great one which has made this world a much better place. I am so happy that Bernie got his long overdue induction into the HOF. Great speeches by a couple of guys who together have created beautiful and meaningful music and priceless memories for us all. Thank you Bernie for the incredible lyrics...you were blessed with such an amazing gift. i stand in unison with all of the countless fans honoring you for this milestone so long in the making.
Bernie is so chill. His lyrics are amazing. I cannot thank him and Elton enough for how their music has affected my life. I listen to Elton everyday. Their music has given me joy when I needed it. Their music has given me comfort when I needed it. Thank you Bernie and Elton.
Yes. The sustain pedal. Elton still insists on using a concert Grand piano triggering antiquated digital piano samples, instead of just micing the piano. Obviously the sustain pedal sensor was not working.
well done Bernie . you throughtly deserve this . now let's get Neil sedaka inducted he throughtly deserves it too . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it .
What the hell is wrong with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! That man made Elton, and they wait 27 years!! Now I understand why some great Performers dis the Hall of Fame
