@@kinggrimlock311 The editing oh my god, I cannot physically handle how well constructed this is; the selection of music, of visuals, and the transitions between them? ?? ?
@@woodlefoof2 Wait, how is the Eclipse Guts's fault? Because Griffith told him to stay away and he didn't? (I'm in early Golden Age in the manga, having seen 2013 "The Advent")
Anyone who thinks Berserk is about nihilism is either not very smart, doesn't know what nihilism is, or just watched the 1997 anime and assumed that's the whole story.
@@AndyLikesPie You're describing existentialism, which is a major theme/influence on Berserk. Berserk is IMO the best existentialist story I've ever read even including stuff by Camus and the people traditionally considered existential philosophers/authors. But existentialism isn't nihilism.
I love berserk and it's soundtrack. The artist of the soundtrack, Susumu Hirasawa is a music genius I even made a video about him. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JuGl_c9jU5I.html
@@AndyLikesPie Usually nihilists end at the bleak world view. Recognizing that the world sucks isn't a nihilist thing. And believing you can find hope isn't a nihalist thing. Existentialism is the better descriptor here. It's by the angency of the individual that meaning is found. For Griffith it's gaining power. For guts it was just living and then became about Casca. Nihilism would reject morals and simply stop at life being meaningless. It doesn't expand on it or anything. Anything more or the belief to have hope isn't nihilism.
"And Miura takes us back to where it all began, to where the dark fantasy seems a little less dark..." *BORN FROM A CORPSE HUNG FROM A TREE AND SWADDLED IN ENTRAILS*
Reading today that Kentaro Miura, the author of Berserk, has passed away, only 54 years old. I come back to this video to remember what an awesome series he left behind, and how sad it will be, to never see it finished. Fans have joked for years that waiting for chapters was like being in limbo, that Guts would never get off the boat, but now that very thing has come to pass. Guts is off the boat but he will never come off the island, but I am happy to know that he is surrounded by everyone he loves, even if his quest will never, truly, end. Goodbye Miura, you gave a lot of us something special.
As of late it is believed that his protege will be continuing things. How people are perceiving this depends on who you ask. Im happy we'll see an end, even if it has hiccups. Plus kentaro mightve left a manuscript.
As of 2024 Kentaro Miura best friend Koji Mori will be taking over the Manga an oversight of the ip an extras. Miura-Sama told the ending synopsis to Mori-Sama so it's in the best hands, friends for 35-40 years an their mothers got confused on who was who sometimes lol. As I understand Miura-sama left a long breath of notes an was teaching his assistants more the past few years prior to his death. So his "brother" for all purposes is handling it with the assistants an a deep plan by Miura on pacing that they have determined their ahead of schedule on. Sad truth of the guy was never behind in his mind but got lost in his art 😅, god we miss ya Kentaro. Hope he's loving the Idol master time, new one came out I believe lol. In other news theirs a studio eclipse* project coming out with the black swordsman arc an they said their goal is do "the valley of lost children arc" up to "Conviction" wich would be season 2 maybe depending on their time to put towards it. The episodes will be coming out '25 an over the year until production time can swings up cause their in uni. But we're finally doing it as fans to give ourselves what we want lol. I can't wait to see what the future will hold but it's definitely not dead. Can you even call yourself a Struggler?
Berserk the only piece of fiction that not only made me go “holy shit!!!” Every time I turned the page, but the only one that made me feel a great depths of emotions from its characters... and the utter rage and desperation of the eclipse will never leave my mind.
I like how philosophical Guts takes in new lessons he learned from other’s situations. He really wants a path to follow and a life to find but always gets put into a bad situation when he thinks he found something
The eclipse was a scarring scene, for Guts, Casca and us readers too, I wasn't prepared 21 years ago, and I still feel empty, betrayed, desolate and hopeless at it..... and I also still hope that Guts escapes and reaches Casca every time, every time man.....
I'd really like to see David Productions adapt Berserk, seeing as many thought Jojo's was unadaptable and how good the JoJo anime was, I'd really like to see where they take the series
DP has a special place in my heart for pulling off such a monumental task like adapting jojo so fucking well, but I think seeing how studio wit is crushing vinland saga and attack on titan, they'll do a FAR better job than them.
@@mihirkamat504 true, but I just feel like DP could bring a sense of style and elegance to the more tender scenes of Berserk that no other studio, at least in my opinion, ever could. As we saw in JJBA, they know exactly how to balance breath taking action scenes with moments of quiet levity, and not to mention their sound design and ost for JJBA has been nothing but perfection
@@mihirkamat504 Strange, I was thinking Vinland’s team would be great too! Or maybe White Fox, since they managed to more than perfectly animate some of the greatest love letters to Berserk
Hell, I would kill for Kamikaze Studios to take it on and do the 3d stuff RIGHT! I would actually love to see it done mostly black and white, kinda noir
Guts is a character that feels so genuine and human.... and yet so unrealistic. In this day and age we have so much control over how we present to others and consequently we strive to only show and acknolwedge the "good and beautiful" parts of ourselves. Meanwhile, Guts is willing to embrace the duality, darkness and complexity of being human. Its so admirable that it seems to draw people to him but also leaves Guts largely isolated... sincerity towards the duality and complexity of the human condition is something I'm sure readers find admirable in Guts, but that most would fail to replicate in their own lives. Guts is ultimately more dang human than any of us! 😍
the very crux of jungian psychology, which is what makes the dichotomy between Guts and Griffith so fucking fascinating, one who embraces and ones who represses
@@nkyfong Well it can leave my friends behind as well. I hear it clang every time it hits something in Band of the Hawk and there's just enough metal on most of the enemies for me to not care
Finally somebody made a non boring, impressively edited Berserk explanation example. I've been searching RU-vid for a decade to find a good one. Your editing is impressive and I recommend you make a series of these. You will go far. I appreciate your work. I do graphic design, photography and media so I fully understand the endless nights of empty beer cans, headaches and so much time lost to making something like this. It paid off, just know that. You have my respect in the deepest regard, along with Miura himself. Long live Berserk and its impressive world.
Imagine what went through my head when, after finishing the Berserk anime for the first time (and desperately wanting for more), I went looking for images of Berserk from google and noticed a page from the manga. After looking at it closer I realized it depicted a scene that had not happened in the anime. At that point I realized ”Wait, the story continues!?” I can't describe the numerous feelings that went through me at that moment. I still remember that first page of the manga that I saw then. It's a scene from volume 2 when Guts finally confronts the apostle count in his throne room.
I love this video! This is just such a huge love letter to the Berserk series. I didnt expect you to go into the game and motion comic too. Thank you so much for all the time this video must have taken to make.
God what is it with everyone getting a boner for studio boner when it comes to berserk, because they did full metal alchemist brotherhood and...... full metal alchemist brotherhood? Fuckin wit studio anyone? Why is it always madhouse and studio bones, they’re great and all and madhouse did great on death note, death parade, and some other good stuff, but wit studio did attack on titan and Vinland saga which are two of the most thematically and similar in tone shows/ manga to berserk I can think of, they were able to capture the complex feelings and tones of the multi-layered and morally gray characters and world so well through the music, sounds, animation, and everything else. I say we should give it to the studio with the best chance to pull it off considering their 2 most successful shows
This video is MASSIVE my man, wonderfully edited and with an incredible selection of panels and music to boot. You're making some of the best content on manga/anime out there, no lie. Keep doing your thing, for real.
Berserk is a masterpiece, that very few works of art can hope to catch up to. but you know what else is a masterpiece? THE EDITING IN THIS FUCKING VIDEO OH MY GOD, the animation and editing in this video is god tier. It's not easy to handle manga in a video essay, and this video does it flawlessly
@@Somespideronline because he has also stated other reasons such as moving from hand to digital, health related, and just needing time to decide where to go.
Mr.Blunt Addiction yeah I agree. I think that people are just scared that he might give it up the story or dies before finishing it. Although I think he will he just needs time
These videos are precisely why I believe that the perfect Berserk anime would be to getting the manga art and animating It, no coloring, no redesign, no drawing from scratch, just the manga art, animated, a good voice acting, some neat soundtrack and zip It to the world... Dang, this video is beautiful!
A couple of years ago I visited Denmark, where Vikings originated from. I remember reading in a museum about berserkers, or warriors that would lose all sense of fear and pain on the battlefield. Berserkers would bite on their shields (if they had any armor at all) and were compared to bears (I guess the origin of the word berserker comes from the old Norse word for “bear”). Once the battle was over though berserkers were kind and gentle (or as gentle as you can be during those times). I wonder if Miura thought about that when he picked the title of his work...
i read a very similar adaptation on berserkers where they became as frail as infants because of all the adrenaline leaving them after a battle. Not saying your wrong at all, as both are believable and perhaps entirely true all the same
this review, no, documentary must be the greatest and most insightful analyzation of berserk i have ever seen. I really appreciate how you think of every feature from several points of view disregarding your own opinions, yet still including them as recommendations because you are a die hard fan after all. Your visuals are astonishing and the honesty this video shines is wonderful. I do not see it as a possibility that anyone who hadn't heard of berserk before this video isn't now determined to read it in it's entirety.
This video was one of the best I've ever watched on this platform, and I'm on youtube pretty much every day (usually for a few hours at least). I've often struggled (haha) to describe both to myself and others what exactly it is about Berserk that makes it one of the closest stories to my heart. For me, I could only get it down to a particular feeling. Something that I couldn't nail down enough to feel as though I'd done it justice in describing it. In my opinion, you've done that. You may never see this, but I truly believe if I ever need to describe to anyone why I love Berserk (and in the off chance that they're willing to watch a 30 minute video to do it) I'll come back here. You helped me to better understand in words why this property is so important to me. Thank you for caring, fellow struggler. Love your other work as well.
i love this video. the amount of care and effort you put into this is amazing. the way you breakdown the beauty of berserk; the intricate storytelling, layered/complex characters, art-both beautiful and horrifying is what distinctly makes it berserk.
I found myself back here twice since the author passed. This is the video I link when I share your work to others. I had Guts theme playing as I walked down the street if Ul'dah in final fantasy xiv with wall to wall players standing before bonfires and gigantic swords lining the street end to end in tribute. Thank you for this.
The Blancmange im trying to get prepared for the mental breakdown since miura will obviously switch the focus on rickert and the assassins before getting a new hiatus AND THEN we might get our casca chapter
I was that one guy who into manga and anime, especially the former who talk about Berserk occasionally sometimes but never come to read it. Just like any other of that one guy I joked about Idolmaster too much and think only Berserk to be high regarded for its dark fantasy. How wrong I was when I open the page of the manga this year. Berserk is a story that goes beyond its bleak and dark setting. It actually revealed to me how dark fantasy is a misnomer that only does great disservice to the very magnum opus that Miura currently creating. Whenever I thought what is the theme of Berserk, only one word come to my mind: love. It is truly a love story. One that rooted in ancient tradition of Greek tragedy. Berserk might be started as edgy, fantasy manga which proclaimed to be dark. But Miura, a master storyteller he is took his very first serialization into a new height. A height that elevates Berserk into a summit that rarely, if ever, any other manga had ever reached. Your video is well made. But what truly makes me love and resonates with it is how you emphasize the more emphatic, more sentimental side of Berserk that usually forgotten amidst the mistaken praise for its dark setting and obnoxious idolmaster meme. For that, I thank you.
Favorite Manga and Anime (1997) Just recently obtained the 2nd volume of the deluxe edition. Great video, easily subscribed for this and your Bebop videos alone
I'm completely blown away by the quality of the editing in the manga section, I can only imagine how much time it must've taken. This video would be worth watching for the visuals alone.
I also first experienced Berserk with the DC game! Although it took me years until i saw the dvds of the 97 anime at a con and was like "omg is that the weird game????" and then became a fan for life
My man I’ve been watching you for a while now you are one of the most in-depth RU-vid personalities I’ve ever seen you have so much skill the way you craft a video And the way you go in depth is just breathtaking you almost had me in tears with this one man this is one of my favorite animes of all time you rock dude
What a coincidence ! Just checked your channel a few hours ago to see if something happened. It felt like I watched your last video months ago. Glad to see you upload another content.
Watching and listening to all of these analysis breakdowns of berserk honestly it helps me cope the fact that I may never see another new chapter. Berserk was and still is the most influential story I have ever read, and it's an absolutely crime that we lost such a legend...
It's a genuine shame that 4c couldn't create a TV series adaptation of the post golden age manga. With more run time to expand the smaller moments, I really think they could have made something great, especially considering just how good the eclipse film was after getting experience under their belt.
Was planning on just listening to this commentary in the background, but ended up watching for the whole 38 minutes. The painstaking effort in the video mirrors the effort put into the Berserk manga.
Hey Joe! Just want to say you're awesome. And I'm so stoked to stumble apon your channel. The way you see stuff that I over look gives me a greater appreciation for these films and I feel a sense of pride that my taste for anime is very much in line with yours. Most of what you have covered in your channel so far are all up there as my favorites. I'm gutted that I have now caught up on all your videos (just in this last week). Can't wait to sit down and watch this Berserk piece! Berserk is my all time favorite, apart from the most recent series (look what they did to my boy..) I'm going to make a Patreon account just to show my appreciation.
I normaly watch couple of videos before subscribing but this was so beautiful i didn't even realize it was over 30 minutes. I try to get people into berserk but they can't stand the blood and gore and never bother. It's honestly my favorite manga.
