im 31 now, a father of 3, married. started sketching and painting in minneapolis MN, learning from Eros and many others when i was 14, 15ish. it was my love and my journey and i remember seeing your pieces online on Flickr, along with Askew, and others. i even did an old sketch exchange with askew way back then, granted i was a punk kid but that connection online with artists changed my life. i was a kid lost in the legal system and graffiti and sadly drugs were the 2 things i felt i had and i did lose myself to the drugs eventually, but after many years away from drugs i feel a bit of the writers block lifting, and listening to this old video biography man has really inspired me again. thank you. i wrote Radar 7 as a young lad, idk if itll be the same as i feel im entering the world for the first time again, but seriously, thank you.
As someone who like many younger writers looked through Disruptiv magazines, Artillery etc and saw the rise of TMD and Gbak and seeing your advances via social media and now watching this video was nothing short of a total privilege. Thank you so much Berst, I know every person who got the opportunity to paint with you from my home city of Duds said you were an absolute champion of a bloke who kept it very real. I'll never forget seeing one of your much earlier train hits way down the south in a yard, not sure of it was in service but, amazing to come full circle. Heart felt respect, stay crushing lad.

Thanks bro, will do my best. The first five years are more horrible pieces and lots of biting. Particularly 2006 haha so we'll see how the response of this video comes along and I'll try drop the other one.
some absolutely mind blowing styles and burners, make one about your come up to this point, I love when old writers talk about their earliest days of bombing

The improvement transitioning thought 2007-2008 is outstandingly noticeable. I like they way you encourparated an abstrac principle to the formation of the lettering .. also love it when you guys bring life in to your work with animals etc I believe this would.capture a more demographic audience due to them not be soong critical and truly appreciating the art. Awesome keep it up you guys should all be proud it's amazing what you do.. well alot different from when I would help mates by coloring their bombs 🤪🥰
Thank you Kat for stopping by. Really appreciate the feedback. Doing my best to share some of my insights! Best time was 2007-08 because of so much more frequency of painting. Thats the best way forward!
Thanks for the feedback brother I really appreciate it. Can't go wrong with the classic chrome and black aye but man I love color burners. I started painting graff about a year ago and here in Hastings the buff is a constant war but too have your pieces from sea walls in Napier and influences such as feugo popping in it has changed my thought patterns of not just getting up but doing larger cleaner work that may stay up and too bring more recognition and awareness too the graffiti art style and culture and hopefully change a few minds in this small town.
Thanks for stopping by. Always good to strike a balance and do both large scale murals that stay up and getting up. Each city is always going to be different but most importantly you just need to leave your mark whatever form that might take! The question I ask myself is always what do I want to leave behind in this world and for me its the graf!
Really love to see work from different areas, seen a few of your pieces in the good old days of streetfiles but completely forgot about it. Thanks for the flashback and the insightful video on your incredible development
Sir, your speaking skills and story telling abilities are top shelf. I appreciate that. Your painting skills... astounding, inspirational and just all out amazing. Salute sir
Thanks Stu, really appreciate it. I think painting graffiti is great but it's also important to be able to talk about what we do and why we do it. With my videos in the future I hope to offer that exact viewpoint and from the views of writers here in NZ and how we do it. I've just dropped some prints in a recent collaboration if you're interested in checking it out head to my web store. berst1.myshopify.com/
Bobby Hung I agree, teaching and speaking on graffiti is important. I have twin 11 year old boys and a 10 year old girl (and an infant). They're all into graffiti and I teach them all that I know. Including legal and illegal angles. They actually have a to do list for kids at school. Writing kids names on bookmarks and instrument cases. They're doing it legally AND have become a positive, Artistic COMMODITY!!! Kids seek my kids out for art. They're in 6th grade and 4th grade. My infant sits with me and gets histerical when he sees my colorways. We're a HipHop family, and it's positively charged. They enjoyed this vid with me. I'll check your prints out. Maybe once this Xmas passes I'll be able to contribute. I'd display your prints proudly. Your mad dope. Salute bro. Get up!!!!! Stay safe. Peace
Thats really awesome to hear man. I am a firm believer in the traditions of graffiti but I do also believe that there are other elements and forms of practice that break outside of the norm. There are positive sides to the artform too and I'm working towards showing that. thanks again for watching brother!
An inspiring video, as this kinda video could help a lot of writers out there. Those simple silvers and one color-fill pieces tell the significance of the basic letter structures you have there which really nice to look at. You developed them by implementing out-of-the-box elements to it while maintaining the same structure to it. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you man that is the exact intention to spread the knowledge and explain a little bit of context about my work. You can't go wrong with the basics of chrome and black. What videos would you like to see more of in the future?
maybe next real time web series, you collaborate with another writer. Documenting from ideas, brainstorming, sketching, selecting colors, executing..and how it challenges you to raise the bar.. etc etc. As 2 or more writers could bring different flavor and styles to a production.
for example, one of the stages in tahiti you competed in group. Or guys like Sobekcis, Osgemeos, Dabs Myla..etc they're always work in group and produce consistency along the way. Just my 5 cents. :D
I remember my beginning years of graffiti in 07 looking up to Askew, Does, Berst, Rime, Vans The Omega, Enue, Tues, Ewok, Best, basically the Ironlak team. It's sad the graffiti scene died out but I know it's making its comeback soon!
Hey Sam thanks for that. Those were definitely some of the peak years in new zealand for graffiti and its spread across NZ. A lot of the writers have now either moved on to other art forms or stopped. NZ graffiti is on the rise and I will do more in the future to generate more content for everybody.
+Bobby Hung That's dope keep the graffiti alive!! One thing I'm interested in seeing that not many graffiti youtubers do anymore is Blackbook speed sketches! I would definitely love to see more of that! Props on keep the graffiti scene alive though!
Honestly a big step ahead of other graff content on RU-vid, videos are easy to watch and show to a well informed view of style. I would love to see some Piece break down videos. maybe by picking 3-5 favourites from and year or style and compare/reflect on them and explain more about why the piece stands out.
Thank you brother really appreciate it. Doing my best to help grow the resources of graffiti and encourage others to do the same. Piece break down video is a great idea and definitely something I've had in my mind for a while so stay tuned. choosing a couple of different styles would be a great idea. thanks for the feedback!

2011/2012 and the Dogtown heaters are my personal favorites. I've seen photos of that era of yours and greatly gravitated towards those pieces. Thoroughly enjoyed you showing your divergent process of developing your style and your reasoning behind stylistic decisions. Cheers, man. ✌🏻
Ooosh yeah that was a great year. I had just finished studying and was in full graffiti mode relentlessly painting so gained lots of momentum. Momentum and consistency is a true key to evolving your style and over the past couple of years i've been studying again so my time has been fragmented. Finish up in 2018 so stay tuned for more progress!

its really crazy how fast NZ got fragmented as you said, back in the late 2000s i was so jelly of the unity and supportive nature in the NZ scene.. your a killer B,,
Thanks for watching man. 2001-2006 consists of a lot of biting and mixed pieces. Definitely explored a lot of different things so will do my best to get the next video up!

Bobby Hung another NZ artist profile would be interesting, its like seeing how they work their style .. not only imagine by hearing their voice in real time web series video.. (no offense).. but seeing their profile and history just like yours would be nice too, Thanks for always inspiring bro. 🙇♂️👌🍻

Thanks brother, just trying to showcase some of my work before it gets lost in all my hard drives and then nobody will ever do anything with it. Haser would be super killer! Is there anything you would change about this video to make it better? Was it too long... too short.. not enough pics.. etc?

Great Story! Thumbs up! What about some Realtime-Series with writers from europe and the us, who have inspired you a lot or became crew-members of your's? Big Respect from Germany!!!!
I remember seeing GBAK in huge, bold block letters painted in the most out of it spots when I was growing up as a kid in Auckland in the early 00’s. Never forget that shit
Keep up these videos! You’re doing a great service to the community! :D It’s so easy to be isolated from understanding different scenes or even your home town if just flickin through social media, all you see is finished pieces, no context. So refreshing and interesting to actually get a glimpse of stories behind the style development and other graff scenes!

Nice man! Interesting to hear your perspective on your as well as NZ's stylistic development! Really like the way you have analyzed your various style periods into concepts! Keep the videos coming! Greetings from Sweden! Peace
thank you brother really appreciate it. Yeah I felt it really important to try spread some of the new zealand graffiti back overseas. Hope to visit sweden one day man!
You're very welcome bro! Yes I really like learning more about graff abroad and definitely the NZ scene and its style given that I have followed you and the rest of the TMD guys for many many years, so these videos are great! You have a couch if you ever come to Stockholm! Would be fun to paint together at some point! Peace

Thanks man I really appreciate the comments. Graffiti is my life and I respect it very dearly. Hopefully the video was informative for you. Which years do you think had my best pieces and any ideas who I should review next?
I just watched this vid again to try and figure which 1s I liked the most and cant choose everyone is mind blowing/rediculous Graf Colours/flow/style is top notch!!!

I’d be very interested in seeing and hearing about 2006 down to when you started. But more interested in stories such as, close calls, the crazy or eye opening things you’ve seen on your nights out and things you’re friends have told you about what they’ve seen and done if they gave you permission that is. Been watching mainly the Auckland scene for around 7 years now and I’d love to know some crazy stories to put a picture into a video/story. Cheers bro love all the vids
Yes 2001-2006 is definitely possible and the other wilder stories may not be possible yet but will be in the future so definitely stay tuned. Who do you think are the top 5 writers in New zealand?
Sweet bro well the ones that would be some what acceptable or appropriate ofcourse. Hmm be hard to narrow down 5 Bro, I mean I like more of the raw, Heaven spot type writers. I’m not to fussed about the big colourful pieces. I’d have to say some of the dudes I know but I’ll keep them anon haha ;) love your work though bro, especially chrome and black that shits fire 👌🏼

Super dope, all years... It's very hard to pick one but my true love is always going to be funk style letters with a traditional flavor so I'd say the freight years like 2007/08... All years were amazing though...

It's a hard one but 2013. Those works are like order in chaos for me. I like how they are chaotic works but at the same time have an underlying composition. I think they are risky pieces bordering on mess and masterpiece.
@@jaymanas9921 Completely agree with your comments there. The idea behind it was to try and push it a bit further in terms of the layering, colors, forms and shapes. Possibly bridging on aspects of abstraction but try to maintain the graf at the heart of it
You know the song used in one of gbak's videos it goes like this:baby baby you give me amnesia i forgot the whole world when i see ya ya, you a certified diva you make a man never ever wanna leave ya

I've always thought you had a sick style. Especially your train work. Saw that huge GBAK wall one of your crewmates posted on bombingscience like 7 years ago and followed your work here and there since then, like that sick Kemr WC. I think the first style of yours was similar to the piece at 3:49 but my favorite has to be the astro stuff
Thanks brother really appreciate the feedback. Still doing our best to rep the crew and celebrate other writers. 3:49 was a great era and was using totally different paint as well but the astro was a good part of my career because it fully shifted what and how I painted. Thanks for watching!
He breaths letters, he eats letters, he drinks letters, he shits letters, he paints letters, he sleeps with letters, his kids become letters, he......Respect!!!!!
thanks brother, much love from New Zealand. Please come to nz one day and we can do some painting. What type of videos would you like to see more of in the future on this channel?

Bobby Hung I liked the progression of your style and how you explained where you were at in your life for each piece. Look forward to seeing your next vid 👍
