Cambridge folk festival 30 July 2011. Messrs Jansch and Renbourn do a duet performing 'Soho' a song that predates the formation of Pentangle originally on their 'Bert and John' album from 1966.
The studio version of this song is an addictive listen. This is a wonderful version. I still miss Bert, I still can't believe he is gone. What a wonderful talent, the likes of which won't be seen again. Rest in Peace!
I agree. I'm so glad that the internet has given people the opportunity to discover gems of the music world like Renbourn, Bert Jansch (RIP :-(), Richard Thompson, etc. I've seen John Renbourn once and Thompson several times, both with and without a band. All these shows were in small venues, which made the shows even better. John seems to be a sweet guy. He was nice enough to have a conversation with him about music. I thanked him for sharing his guitar tunings on one of his albums that I have.
Absolutely fairygirl this is pure class.....and of course your right about the internet, we who remember the artistic and practical use of album covers will never cease to be amazed at what we can now do....thanks a lot for leaving your comment :-)
@daf827 Thanks for visiting and leaving a message, Pentangle has that timeless quality that is the mark of a truly significant musical phenomenon and innovation for all time, Bert will be sadly missed.
Thanks so much for posting, one of his last ever performances. Dear, sweet Bert, farewell and a thousand thank yous for your effortless beautiful music
Thanks for uploading this, Aaran - so I can share one of the last performances of Bert! His songs are so lyrical! I am a great John Renbourn fan and proud that John once allowed me to organize his only guitar workshop in Germany - Summer Guitar School 2008 at the North Sea Shore near Eiderstedt. I appreciate Johns soft picking style of his right hand and the nearly classical position of his left hand while playing. Aspects that make his wonderful playing unique. Bernd, grossmann-gitarre
No it was not Bert's last public appearance, there was one more gig at the Royal Festival Hall London, which was also the venue for Pentangle's first major concert ever, that was in 1967 before they had yet released any records.
i think john renbourn has passed as well this year. i had a chance to see bert open for neil young on his last tour. i rue the day missing seeing him play live.
Hi Gail thanks for the comment. Yes the album was released by Vanguard in the US in 1969 with a couple extra tracks and a name change to Stepping Stones.
I see a professional video being shot (off to the right of the video). Is this going to be released on a DVD? This was one of Bert's last performances.
Hello Aaran, I have the recorded version of this on an early Bert Jansch & John Renbourn 60's American album called Stepping Stones, I wonder if its the same as Bert & John for content.
I checked online and saw nothing of John's demise. It appears that he is very much alive! As for Bert, I saw him play live once at Passim in Cambridge with a trio called the Bert Jansch Conundrum. I was very much looking forward to seeing him. Sad to say, he was inebriated and not in top form.
I saw Pentangle 1969; If someone had dropped a pin during the performance, it would have sounded like a scaffold pole clanging down in the road. I don't think the hairs on my arms will be going back doon for a while.
They were excellent as ever but the sound quality was truly shocking. This track sounds OK because the biggest problem with the sound that night was the way they set up Jacqui McShee's vocal mike - terrible. Such a shame as they were obviosuly still fantastic. Every new bout of feedback brought mutterings and boos from the crowd - someone even shouted out (after the second track) - "sort the sound out!!" This is great though.
