Wow. That's more than I would have expected. I'm not shocked, but I would have guessed $750,000 to $1.25 million. And while a costume is a significantly more valuable and visually appealing piece of memorabilia than a script, I would have thought the script would pull in perhaps 10% of the costume's value ($310K). I was shocked it only went for $60K, and I'm even more shocked now having read that the costume sold for so much. If there were buyers eager enough to spend million on the costume, I would think the script could fetch at minimum low six figures.

They showed it on display at auction where it said the estimate of 60-80,000. So he knew what to expect before he sold it.

Most people who watch the show pick up on it normally being assessed at double the appraisal for the insurance. I'm sure he was told or knew this....

Casey Michel For some people, 60k is life changing. For others, not at all. The problem with these items is it’s not like a few hundred dollar item that you could leave out to admire and display. An item worth that much means high insurance premiums, leaves you open to theft, maybe someone breaks in and might harm your family. Maybe you leave it out for your kids to look at and the cat pees on it. I think it would certainly be worth photocopying before you auction it, so the family can always look at it.

For me it is better for him to sell it since he cant afford to insured it. People are buying expensive item/collectable as and investments and insured them for safety. Hence he cant even afford that, its better to sell them

He doesn’t look like he’s living in a box without electricity. There’s no way that amount of money is life changing “for him”. He should have just displayed it!

Bert Lahr's legacy is not in a film script...he was a massive star on Broadway before and after this film...sure his general popularity grew with the re-emergence of the film on tv in the fifties..but his legacy is on the stage....stuff got divided between his 3 kids after his death..so be it..this guy has all the right in the world to sell it..those old vaudevilleans knew the value of a buck and wouldn't have hesitated to sell if placed in his situation

I would have definitely sold. Paying insurance every year for up to $150,000 is around $1,000/year so 20 years later, you're out $20,000 and who knows if it will even be worth much more than $60,000. Pure luck that this man had it and this was his step grandfather; not his actual grand father, but whatever; it's like winning a $60,000 lottery ticket and not cashing it. Loved the video

Agreed. Saw stars in his eyes, and greed pushed him to sell it. $60,000 isn’t much in the long run. He also didn’t look like it had much sentimentality to it. A shame.

@@HHH-ye1ro It's his step grandfather's and he felt no connection. $60,000 is a great deal of money for most people as half the country lives pay check to pay check, so how many people even have $60,000 saved?

And the fact that it was his step grandfather I'm sure there's a blood relative out there that would love to have it

Folks forget that "The Wizard of Oz" was a commercial flop upon its initial release. In today's dollars, it cost a staggering $57-million and lost MGM $23-million. As such, there was scant incentive at the time to save memorabilia from its production. Surviving items are therefore exceedingly rare. This script embodies a magic "trifecta" for serious collectors: scarcity, direct association (with a principal cast member of a cinematic masterpiece) and impeccable provenance.

You might think that their would be several scripts remaining around in other collectors hands or in museums, but nope, especially one of the main actors working scripts is extremely rare. In 1970 MGM studio storage building caught on fire and destroyed A lot of Oz and other stuff housed in warehouses on Lot that burned to the ground, probably even once housed actual filmed footage of deleted jitterbug dance number scene that was cut out and none gone forever.

I prefer a system of solidarity where everyone pays his taxes based on the income (so really poor people have to pay nothing) and every child gets the same chances in life. Family heirlooms are kept to sell later, so you can help your future generation in their lives.

Family heirlooms that are sentimental/low value should be kept. Ones that create a burden (high insurance replacement costs) for the family should be happily sold for a fair market or premium value and nobody should feel bad about it if it helps the family improve their lives.
