Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/c...
Today I am out at the range to put the first shots through a completed replica of the French Chauchat-magazine Berthier conversion. The real versions of these guns were made on Mle 1890 cavalry carbines and Mle 1907-15 long rifles, as survival rifles for pilots and observers early in World War One. This example was built up from parts and based on an M16 Carbine (with the upper handguard).
I was hoping to be able to use this in a competitive environment to compare it to a Mauser 98 or Springfield 1903 with an extended trench magazine, but it doesn't look like that will be possible, unfortunately.

I guess the idea there was that by cramming up a high capacity magazine, you could make carrying extra ammunition non-necessary because you literally have all this into a single magazine? Like instead of having I would say what? 6-7 berthier stripper clips? You would have a single magazine.

While helping Othias at C&Rsenal, Andrew at Archival Research Group actually found some US memos that show this was the exact process behind the Springfield Air Service, though instead of a survival rifle they wanted a backup weapon for when the machine guns jammed. The air crews in France were not happy that Ordnance so badly misunderstood the request, they wanted something along the lines of a Winchester 1910.

I spent a full year trying to keep a loaded magazine that weights more than the gun does in the gun. Lots of mass, lots of machining, lots of welding later, I had to eventually mail it back to him. I'm willing to call this a learning experience, at best, and the customer did not get what he wanted, at worst. This mag is held in the 1915 Chauchat with a large spring, and the rounds are stripped with the bar that unlocks the breech sleeve. Mag locks into the 1915 with a completely different geometry, also. The Berthier feed geometry is totally different, and I would give a lot to see how the original modification was done. This one was done blind, and the outcome was less than adequate. As I have said before, pick up a tool and start screwing up................................
@TooLatePeople

why didn't you try to use some kind of screw-in catch which didn't rely on spring? That might have been more effort spent on changing mags, but much more reliable

In the anvil episode on this gun, Mr. Novak points out the many problems with this conversion, especially with locking the magazine
@Imbeachedwhale
@Imbeachedwhale 4 года назад
Joe Montgomery Part of the issues Mark had was a lack of resources compared to the French. Both had to essentially take a system designed to hold the clip down into one that holds the magazine up. However, Mark Novak had to modify the existing trigger guard, which had been milled for the bottom metal, while the French could take trigger guards from the factory before they were milled. In his video he had considerable difficulty with this area, and Ian shows this is still an issue. To get this completely correct Mark would need to make a completely new trigger guard, emulating the route the French took. I’m not sure it would still function well due to the other issues with the conversion, but it might do better than this first attempt.

You could attach the magazine permanently to the rifle. That may fix the recoil dynamics issue. For loading, especially in a match, stripper clips would be prefferable. As always, Ian provides a fantastic reality check for movies and games. In film and games, they always portray "modified", "experimental", and "prototype" weapons as some amazing thing that is light years ahead of everything else that always works, never jams or malfunctions in any way, and never, ever breaks for any reason. As Ian shows, reality is mostly that they are quirky, kludgy, temperamental proof-of-concept things that only a madman would take into the field.

I wonder how Ian made Mark actually do that conversion. Like: Ian: Hey, please fit this Chauchat mag to my Berthier... Mark: But it didn't really work in original, you know that? Ian: Sure. I mean, do your best, but... Mark: OK

It ran with all three mags when we mailed it, barely...............

I had a Bertier in the early 90's, long before the internet was a thing. I was told it was an 8mm, but not knowing anything about the gun I tried 8mm Mauser. Of course this fell about halfway through the barrel because the Mauser didn't have that huge taper on the shell. After reading a lot of magazine articles and a lot of phone calls I finally found the 8mm Lebel. No one made new ammo for it at the time so it was a chore finding surplus ammo for it, but finally I found some. Every time you fired it there would be a flame shoot out the barrel half as long as the gun. It was so much fun to shoot. Unfortunately I no longer have it. I sure do miss that gun.

I can't believe I'm saying it, but I think we actually found a practical use for magazine catch "safeties" like what was found on the SVT, PPSh, and Hakim. Something to more firmly lock the magazine in place by fixing the existing catch in securely while the gun is fired would solve the mag dropping.
