If you have ever visited Bali in Indonesia, you have probably heard of Besakih Great Temple. It is Bali's biggest Hindu temple, and is considered the spiritual home for Hindus on the islands. Located in the slopes of Mount Agung, the temple complex was founded in the eleventh century, and has since been a significant place for Hindu Balinese to worship at.
The temple is made up of hundreds of shrines, pavilions, and gates, which provides visitors with a life time of exploring. Within the grounds, visitors can admire the many small temples dedicated to various gods and goddesses. One of the most impressive structures is the Pura Penataran Agung, the main temple. Situated on a wide cliff, it has eighteen towers and is home to one of the most impressive gods, Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa.
The Besakih Great Temple in Bali has been an important destination for worshippers for centuries, and it’s also a sacred site for Hindu festivals and rituals. Referred to as “Pura Besakih,” it is often called the “Mother Temple” of Bali and is a revered center of worship for the Balinese Hindu faith.
Built on the slopes of the sacred Mount Agung volcano in central Bali, the temple is made up of more than 20 holy shrines, including temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. Taking center stage is the Mother Sanctuary - also known as the Pura Penataran Agung - which is the largest and most sacred of the temple’s structures.
During religious festivals, worshippers come to Besakih to offer prayers and participate in various rituals and ceremonies.
