Deep in France is this absolute gem of a place. River on three sides with a magnificent citadel on the fourth. This video is designed to show you around and give you an idea of what to expect.
I've just come back from Besançon, it is a lovely place and your video was a very helpful guide. We found ourselves walking in your footsteps at times! The Resistance Museum reopened on (appropriately Besançon liberation day) 8 September and is excellent. Also, very useful to know that for €1.40 you can go on all local public transport for an hour, just tap in as you get on the bus or tram.
You warn about finding a restaurant early. We had the opposite problem. We strictly cooked for ourselves while in Besancon and on the first day there, still jetlagged, we missed getting food for lunch at the bakeries and grocery stores before they shut and had to wait for 2pm to shop!
Don't know about you Rob but I will definitely be very disappointed when your holiday is over! Enjoying every minute that you upload. Even watched most of your videos more than one. Thank you so much ♥️ From Australia
I thought there was a mark on my iPad screen kept scratching to remove it, obviously too early for me, it’s the funny ç in Besançon. Once again thank you for taking us on your journeys. Love how you find quiet spots all to yourself. Monkeys?
Hey great video ! For you knowkledge, the stone which house of the inner town made of, was quarried directly on the Citadel place. And the Citadel was made with the same stone. The place where the Citadel is, used to be the top of the moutain. The inner Citdel ground floor is the limit where the stone was mined.
You certainly find some off the tourist trail spots! Hotel de ville in France means town hall so the VIC must be in former town (or city) hall. How many km did you walk in one day!
@@JinitiCibis well besançon is pretty close to switzerland and some amazing french cities such as dijon or mulhouse but yeah there's not that much to do... it's a tranquil small town with the infrastructure of big city with lots of green areas. its cost of living is chill compared to other french cities and it's a great town for students ❤
@4:30 Funny enough you didn't mention that although Besançon is a rather small city, our Museum is one of the oldest museum in the world, in fact it's in top 4 or 3 I think.
But thanks for teaching me that we also had the first orchestra pit... I'm in awe at how much of the art scene had their "first" in my dear little town. Knowing that "Les freres Lumieres" who contributed so much to the birth of photography and cinema were also from Besançon :)
@@eklor I absolutely adore your town. I wish I had more time to explore it and am so very keen to return. The museum there is without a doubt the most impressive and wonderful I have ever visited. I miss Becançon so much!!
1:36 why would it be in English ? It's not a touristic place, and it's Franche-comté, people are not that familiar with English, the imperialism I swear lol. There's not much tourist from "outside"... most of the time is cultural tourism from people around France and mostly Franche-Comté itself, also Museum is not just about archeology but also painting and more... you'll find some english and german in Zoo and Museum tho. But nice to see your curiosity is not just Paris or big cities in France. To answer the question about the zoo, here some insight from the official website : "the Parc zoologique of besançon is involved in 53 conservation programs to date, including 6 reintroduction projects. Nearly 90% of the species presented here are bred as part of European and international breeding programs." It's also a good way for people to study or have references (art) close to them, I guess too.
@technite5360 If you listen to what I am saying at that point in the video, you will realise that I am simply explaining that, unlike Paris, many signs in this town are not translated. I am merely making a statement for the benefit of those overseas who may wish to visit one day. This is nothing to do with imperialism.
@@walkaboutwithrobthanks for your video 😊 ! I'm living in Besançon, and i can relate that some signs have an english translation : maybe they added the translation recently ? Maybe only the 'most iconic' places have dual languages ? I can't tell, but for sure that's a good thing they translate signs imo 😊 And, you were lucky to visit here with a sunny weather, actually we have rain, rain, and even more rain 😅 !
Ridiculous! Making a movie about a French town without obviously speaking a single word of French -- and not even being able to pronounce the name correctly! 🙄
Wow...rude much...does it matter if he doesn't pronounce the name correctly...at least Rob made the effort to go there and share his experiences with us
@@shellebelle53 yes it was a rude and quite bizarre. His attitude seems to be that a person must learn the language of a country before they visit it. He clearly doesn't do much travelling - if he did he would know what the real world is like. Anyway, glad yo enjoyed this one. Was wonderful to see a town so few Australians even know exists.
