Bespoke Dining Table - Epoxy Resin & Alcohol Ink

This is a video timelapse of my most recent project at Alchemy Artisan Works; a custom dining table for my clients. Some of the captions go by a bit quickly, I was trying to keep the length to a minimum, but you can always pause to read them. 😉
This project involved designing and building the table from scratch, fabricating a metal base, pouring an epoxy resin design layer, painting the surface of that with alcohol inks, pouring a final epoxy resin flood coat, applying a durable top coat to resist UV, scratches, chemicals and stains, and refinishing and reupholstering 8 dining chairs.
This project was a total adventure, and there were many firsts, fails, and re-tries along the way. I had no road map, no one to consult (and I did try to find others who’d done this before, but couldn’t) so I blazed my own trail.
It’s a bit lengthy, but I wanted to show my process from start to finish, including my challenges and fails. I think all too often, we only see the best clips of the best results which can leave you feeling like you don’t measure up when things don’t go perfectly, start to finish, every time. I can tell you my process was anything BUT perfect! At the end of the day, I persisted and achieved a result that not only pleased my client (she was over the moon), I loved it, too. And, let’s face it. As an artist, you wanna love your work, too!

I appreciate the details and info that you share but please slow them down a bit. I often had read less than half and it disappeared. It was difficult to see what the text meant because the text was over top of the work. A very gorgeous and realistic look tho.

Thank you so much for the compliments. I myself am a visual learner and probably why I like to put the info in text form. 😄 I recommend simply hitting the space bar to pause the video when there is more to read. I do this all the time with RU-vid videos, especially when following a tutorial. It’s a very easy solution. 😁 Thanks, again!

Im about to spend a buttload of money on supplies to practice and produce something similar (I want more base showing, a little less ink) and it's been a pleasure to watch your process. Ill go SC all the way including the UTC. You nailed this look, congratulations!

Wow. As a mixed media artist that always hits a spot where I hate what I’ve done and am certain I can’t bring a piece back from ruin, this was amazingly validating. Highly creative and experimental or technical processes are difficult to predict and just take time and layers and perseverance. I do hope you made a small fortune on this. It’s beautiful and not something just anyone could do. (I say this because I struggle to price work that I’ve spent a gazillion hours on because part of me thinks I should be able to create something in this very efficient way, but it just doesn’t work like that..) You solved all kinds of problems with all your skill and knowledge. That seems very valuable to me aside from how beautiful and creative the end result is..

So beautiful! I do similar projects, and I love to see other people go through whatever it takes to make it happen. Sometimes I end up making about 25 cents an hour but inks, alcohol, resin, temperature, and whatever other magic alchemy thrown in….who knows what will happen! Loved this video!

Thank you so much! I do, too, and I’ve experienced the “zero profit zone”, as well. 😜 But, you live and learn. When I look at how difficult this was (for someone WITH talent and experience) I do wonder why I struggle with setting a reasonable monetary value, as do many artists. Clearly not just anyone can do a thing like this, and so it should be valued accordingly. I do think the DIY world has created the illusion that “art is easy” and anyone can get pro results, which simply isn’t true. And it seems like the expectation or thought process becomes, “I could do this myself for next to nothing so why should I pay that much for you to do it?” Thanks again for the compliment!

Can’t tell you how thankful I am to see this very real depiction of the artistic process, the adventure, the lessons, the experiments. How incredible. About the time I saw the tweed fabric for the chairs I was teary eyed and audibly went, “aaahhh”, the good kind of painfully pleasing wow that falls out when you’re amazed lol YOU ma’am are amazing! Thanks a million for taking the time to create this content and allowing us to ride the ups and downs with you. I’m about to try my hand at my very first little resin venture so I to watch someone scratch their piece and start again, and read your relatable process of “love it, hate it, it sucks, I suck, oh maybe not so bad, ok cool love it again” is so reassuring. It’s all part of the journey. 🎉 thanks again! Eager for more
@AlchemyArtisanWorks
@AlchemyArtisanWorks 5 месяцев назад
I very much appreciate you taking the time to leave these very detailed comments. I’m glad sharing the “lows” was affirming for you. There’s so much content that only allows us to see the “perfect” final results, that we get lulled into believing the false reality that there weren’t any fails or struggles in the process. I may not be the world’s best videographer or editor (as has recently been quite rudely pointed out to me by a very unkind person), but that’m wasn’t my first priority here (though I’m always striving to improve those skills). Rather, sharing my very real process, with all its fails as well as successes, with others, especially those starting out, as a means of offering encouragement to stick with it through the tough spots, not give up, and be willing to change direction or start again when something isn’t working, was! Even the best of us have epic fails and bad days where we make complete crap! 😆 Don’t hesitate to reach out to me through my Alchemy Artisan Works Facebook messenger, or if you haven’t yet, join my Artistic Alchemy Epoxy group on FB. Best to you in your epoxy adventures! 🎉

The dimples and fish eye spot was because of the towel paper you passed before the flood coat. It left particles of the towels on it
@AlchemyArtisanWorks

I understand why you’d say this, but I have now had this problem with this particular product on several other projects where I did not use paper toweling before doing the flood coat. It is something else with this product. Not a reliable top coat.

I love your work! Just a question. Do you sell your alcohol ink and resin products to the public and are you not worried about the fact that it looses colour after a couple of weeks? Or how do you avoid it? I would love to do large painting but are very scared about customers returning my product due to this fact. Would love a reply from you thanks
@AlchemyArtisanWorks
@AlchemyArtisanWorks Год назад
Thank you so much! Oh boy, I sure wish I had my own alcohol ink and resin products. 😄 What a nice revenue stream that would be! But I think you meant, do I sell the work I produce with it, yes? When you “finish” your ink work properly (use the right sealers with UV protection) it shouldn’t be a problem. You do have to advise people that alcohol ink is not archival and some color shift can occur over time, and that they definitely should keep it out of direct sunlight, if possible. Additionally I seal my ink work with a final coat of Art Resin (for that pretty shine and a UV protective finish that greatly reduces fading). I have several coats of this on this table. I have an alcohol ink art piece right here in my office finished that way, that is about 7 years old and still looks perfect as the day I painted it! I hope this helps you 🤗

Like, I don’t think I had it in here, but when I was still hating it the 2nd time around, I went over to my salon area (hairdresser/nail tech here) grabbed my gallon of acetone and threw a cup of it across the surface! And THAT’S when some true magic happened! I can’t explain it, but it made my inks really “bloom”. And you’re right about my guy, he’s been my biggest cheerleader and helper. And it took us some time to work out that just right interaction. 🤓 I fought my way through a lot of fear and self doubt on this project! I knew giving up wasn’t an option, but boy were there times I didn’t know how I was going to succeed. Again, I so appreciate your response, and for subscribing. You made my day! 💖🙏

Please answer this question… did the colors hold up or fade? I haven’t so many that faded within weeks and I want to build one but don’t want to waste my time and money for it to fade out quickly I mean I absolutely love your project but before I begin I’m trying to see if it holds up or not?? Thank you for posting
@AlchemyArtisanWorks
@AlchemyArtisanWorks 5 месяцев назад
According to my client, it’s holding up great! I did quite a few layers of UV protection, as its light (with its UV rays) that fades the ink. That, and for some reason, epoxy just seems to “eat up” purple ink/pigment, so these colors had to be super sealed! If you are worried about facing, I’d highly recommend doing a sample board, with all the steps and give it a good long test run before diving into a costly project. Best to you!

Thank you 🙏 It was a tough call. We had to find something for the cushions that pulled the colors together and would also be virtually “toddler proof”! This fit the bill.

I wish you did voice over. Reading and trying to watch the process is difficult for me. You do beautiful work.

Thank you, my husband keeps telling me I need to do voiceover. I just haven’t got there, yet. I totally understand. Until I revamp with voiceovers, maybe you could just pause on those frames to read? It’s a learning curve to get behind the lens and produce these dang things! 😆 I much prefer just making the art. It would fe so nice to have someone else do all the filming and editing, but alas, I have neither the crew nor the budget for one! 😂 I shall try to do voiceover in the future. I know I should! Maybe I’ll even start with reworking an earlier vid. Thanks, again! 💖

I like your voice, so I think speaking as you go, rather than writing, would be better. We would get to see your piece rather than squinting through the writing to see it. STUNNING RESULTS.

Thank you so much! That really means a lot to me. 💕 I’ve always but a bit self-conscious about speaking and being on camera, but now that I have pushed myself through my discomfort (since making this video), I have made it a goal to re-make this video with me speaking! Your comment has fueled the urgency to get it done!! Thanks, again

It is absolutely stunning but it was also before applying the ink. I don’t really understand why you apply the ink on top. Why not either one look or the other?
@AlchemyArtisanWorks
@AlchemyArtisanWorks 5 месяцев назад
Thank you! Trust me, I LOVED the pre-ink golden marble! There were a lot of reasons I did that finish as a first layer. The ink pattern was her desired look. It’s a little hard to see it in photos, but since the inks are transparent, the iridescent marbled patterns shine through the ink. So pretty and much richer than just a flat white base. Hopefully that answers your question. 😁

So u poured alcohol directly in water or resin?

Neither. The resin was already cured in this technique. I used ISO alcohol to move the inks.

Sorry for the late reply. I used some ranger inks, and an off brand I got from Amazon. I’d have to look them up, so sorry I don’t recall which, off hand.

Being 100% built from scratch; original design, bespoke powder coated steel frame, custom epoxy poured base design, hand painted ink design, epoxy clear coat and protective finish, $8000. I can work over an existing table for substantially less cost!

I also am a visual person and I do know about the pause button....it's just that to continually hit the pause button all the time is extremely exhausting and distracting. It does not give the viewer a good experience to view what is obviously a fantastic piece of artwork. That is why I left the message as you are not doing yourself any favours. Other RU-vidrs manage to put text up long enough for the viewer to read without having to try and continually hit the pause button at the right time or have to rewind to try and catch it again at the right time to pause it. If you expect only good reviews then you will never learn to improve...this is the real world mot a fantasy.

True constructive criticism can be given without ugliness, and I am completely capable of receiving it, and with gratitude for the opportunity to improve. Yours was pretty ugly. You literally made the bulk of your comment about tearing down my “videography and editing” process, and seemed to miss the points that were shared (which, apparently, MANY folks managed to extract from my “appalling” video), like the artistry, and the fact that I was willing to make myself vulnerable and share my struggles as well as my success. I am striving to improve all the time, and my videos actually have improved over time. I’m also a mom of an adult child with disabilities, work at 3 different jobs (all self-employed), as well as creating artwork, AND trying to learn social media competence and creating content through videography and editing. I don’t expect I’ll please everyone. I don’t expect everyone to love my creations. I know my videos aren’t perfect, or as good as people who’ve been doing it longer, are more confident talking and being in front of the camera, or who just plain have help creating their content. I DO invite “helpful” constructive feedback. But, I also won’t hesitate to call a person out on just plain nastiness. Calling what I did “appalling”… nasty, not helpful, not constructive, and hurtful in its intent. Saying, “Hey, wow! Incredible process, but I sure would have got more out of the actual content with voiceover, rather than the text, which didn’t quite cut it for me. I really think your videos would be greatly improved with more voiceover. It would be great if you could try that! Thanks for sharing your process!” THAT, my friend, is “constructive”. Literally meant to instruct about something that “encourages” a person to try to improve. Name calling… “destructive”. You could learn a few tips on how to offer CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM and not just shredding a person’s work (whether it be the actual art or just the way we’ve tried to share it). How much content have you created? Perhaps you wouldn’t mind sharing your video work with all of us? What’s your channel, I’d love to learn from your perfected techniques! Thanks!

The text we are supposed to read to see the process is not on the screen long enough to read! Try following yourself and do something about it. Appalling video!
@AlchemyArtisanWorks
@AlchemyArtisanWorks 5 месяцев назад
I’m sorry it was not to your liking. I am personally a very visual person, and I like using a little thing called the pause button when there is text. It allows me all the time I need to read what is on the screen. You should try it sometime. Also, I am an artist, and a somewhat shy person, and just learning how to do all of this videography. You really are quite rude to call it appalling when you know nothing about me, or the process, or how difficult it is to be on camera when you are a shy person. A little kindness goes along way, and I find your rudeness appalling.

Thank you! Yes, indeed. That was the challenge. It is not lightfast, and this is what I explained to my client. I did multiple UV protective finishes to significantly retard that process. She accepted the risk, and, Voila! I do small ink paintings with resin and UV protection and they have held up quite well over time.
