Agriculture has always played a vital role in West Africa, and in just a few decades, agrifood value chains have become the cornerstone of the region's economy. Agricultural product processing is a formidable growth accelerator.
Creating products with added value not only enables exports to global markets, it also serves to create jobs, boost farmers' incomes and reduce agricultural losses. Large numbers of businesspeople are now involved in processing agricultural raw materials. However, all those firms, particularly SMEs, face significant obstacles to their development. Access to energy, which is vital for product processing, is complicated, and remains a major challenge in the region.
The BioStar project was launched in two pilot copuntries - Senegal and Burkina Faso - to satisfy the energy requirements of those SMEs.
