Several test simulations were used which are considered typical of tasks where a carpenter might use a brad nailer on. The simulations included:
Soft Wood Trim Installation- Brad nailers were used to install Pine trim onto framing lumber, to evaluate hole quality.
Hard Wood Trim Installation- Brad nailers were used to install Oak, Mahogany, IPE and Maple trim over plywood. This test allowed us to evaluate power, penetration of fasteners, depth of drive adjustments and nail hole quality.
Toe-Nail Application- We installed ½” Poplar bead-board was inatalled onto framing lumber by toe-nailing the tongue of the trim. This test evaluated penetration of fasteners, line of sight, and depth of drive adjustments.
Line of Sight and Accuracy Testing - Fasteners were installed onto cross-hair marks, and straight lines, to determine how well users could hit the marks and determine line of sight and accuracy of the contact tips.
18 Gauge Cordless Brad Nailer - Factors Considered
In addition to the simulations each of the crew members spent time shooting fasteners into varying materials, to evaluate each brad nailer independently. The simulations and individual evaluations were used to determine the Best 18 Gauge Cordless Brad Nailer, in several categories including:
Size and Weight
Ergonomics
Features -Performance
Power
Price
Best in Class - derived from the above categories
Size and Weight - WINNERS - Dewalt and Milwaukee
Cordless brad nailers certainly benefit from the lack of an air hose, but have to comprimise due to added weight of batteries.
The length, width, and height of the nailers were used to determine their cubic volume, and a rank was assigned based on volume and tool weight. In the accompanying graph, the upper band is the weight of the nailer while the lower band is the size ranking of the nailers.
The lightest brad nailer was DEWALT , at 5.2lbs. followed very closely by the Milwaukee at 5.7lbs. Makita and Metabo HPT were the heaviest brad nailers, approximately 1lb. heavier than DEWALT and Milwaukee.
Best Cordless Brad Nailer - Ergonomics - WINNER - Milwaukee
Ergonomics play a major role in all of our evaluations and testing. Not only does a tool need to perform well, but it’s very important that tools are comfortable, which ultimately leads to more productivity and reduced risk of injury.
Milwaukee finished first for the ergonomics category, coming in 11 points better than the second place DEWALT and 21 points better than the third place Metabo HPT. The team felt that the changes made to the NEW Milwaukee Gen 2 nailer were noticeable and impressive.
Balance
The team felt that Milwaukee was the best balanced nailer, with an even weight distribution
The DEWALT is more top heavy [with 2.0 Ah battery] but that can be drastically improved, by installing a heavier 5.0 ah battery. In that configuration, the DEWALT is as evenly balanced as the Milwaukee, but, slightly heavier.

@@ConcordCarpenter Conspicuously absent is the Senco cordless 18g nailer. I'm a Makita guy but when it came time to go cordless Makita 2 years ago had bad reviews. A coworker suggested Senco. It's never jammed or failed to properly drive a nail. I would say the line of sight isn't the greatest but I got used to it. It's super lightweight too. Oh yeah, the hook is highly adjustable.

After having a Ryobi cordless 18 gauge for a couple years, I got tired of the constant need to clean and oil the firing pin or the darn thing wouldn't complete the cycle and fire without actually driving the nail in. Sold it on craigslist and bought the Milwaukee since I have a couple of their other tools so have bats and a charger. Everything you say about it in this video is spot on. Fast, reliable, and easy to handle. So nice to have a tool that works perfectly every time.

I scored the ryobi airstrike brad nailer on black friday sale for $79. It actually works super well, they did a good job with their nailer! I consistently drive 2" brads. Super easy to load and a lever to clear jams up top. I know people hate in Ryobi but I feel like it would be competitive with their brad nailer to these other companies.

I'm heartened to know that Milwaukee has greatly improved the gen 2 over the gen 1. I bought the gen 1 and even sent it to Milwaukee for repair when it would not consistently sink the brads. It came back with zero improvement in performance. I shelved it and bought the Hitachi to replace it. I have no complaints about that gun. It performs flawlessly everytime. I just sold the Milwaukee to a greenhorn because an imperfect nail gun beats non at all. I was forthright with him about the tool but he still saw the wisdom have buying it. I'd love to get the new Milwaukee guns as they look to be terrific. But I can't justify it as of yet.

The same thing with this gen 2 is gonna happen I know a guy who has the gen 2 he loved in the beginning then it started not sinking them all the way, thats tge problem with nitrogen filled air container eventually the air escapes, the Dewalt uses a flywheel system and actually gets better as it gets older, it might be more noisey and very slight delay but it is by far the most reliable of the nail gun systems

Been air free for 2 years , try one out at your local tool shop , sure air had some good points , fine nose , shoots through anything , light to hold in some cases , but the electric lead to the compressor , the space the compressor takes up in the truck , the air hose , and then the pack up time takes away those joys . I’m using the 15g ( Senco style fix nail ) Milwaukee , it does most of what I need and pack up is just walking to the truck and putting it back in the tool box , no more effort than that to pack up !

Always a pleasure listening to your reviews. Some of the most objective and complete reviews on RU-vid. Love your reviews and comparisons. Very well organized, objective criteria... Just a couple of points: your decision matrices are “relative value” matrices. They reflect the rankings of various alternatives, but not the magnitude of the differences. Might be worth mentioning, and would help ensure viewers/readers are better informed. Second: in a relative values matrix, when two alternatives are ranked equally, they should split the difference. Two of four tools in third place would get scores of 3.5, not 3, or 4, or 3 and 4, but splitting the difference between 3 and 4. Yes, I’m a retired Army officer, engineer, and professor, and this is part of what I taught. Again, love your work. Thanks for all the hard work, the attention to detail and the quality reports.

New to the channel and remodeling industry... I've been a DeWALT guy for years in other occupations. I love my Yellow and Black but I've found some tool envy in Milwaukee. Between the top 3: DeWALT, Milwaukee, and Makita, I've always found it interesting the Milwaukee and Makita (a lot of times) changes places as the #1. However, I've also noticed that DeWALT usually retains the #2 position in most reviews. Milwaukee is a brand that I might have switched to earlier but now... I'm too invested in the batteries, tools, and accessories to make the change. I'm still happy to see that the brand gets solid reviews but damn... Milwaukee is solidifying that Professional brand name. Thanks for the review.

I have the Milwaukee nailer. I have just run 30,000+ nails through it in the last month, installing pinewood ceilings at my family’s motel. I have had ONE, read it ONE, jam up, and i do believe it was my fault as i jammed the nails in the gun and don’t believe i had the strip of nails in all the way. On my 1.5 Ah battery, that is 6 years old (purchased bare nailer), i average 700 nails/charge. on my generic 5ah battery, i can do about 4,500 nails but it is significantly heavier. 30 minute charge time on the 1.5 so i just throw that on the charger while prepping the next bit of material and doing so it can keep up with a days work.

Yo Rob- I gotta give you a quick advice as you have SOO many people coming here and watching tools and making purchase decisions - put affiliate links to amazon. also in the article don't links to vendor sites - give the links to amazon. you will more money and we will get more videos! it's a win-win!

@@ConcordCarpenter if you put links to all the tools no one thinks you prefer one over the other because of sales. besides I don't think anyone suspects you go through all of this insane amount of work just to throw in a couple of tools. I won't lie I'm mentally incapable of "donating" to support my favorite groups so buying tools through their links is my way to support.

If you use it a lot, you should find somewhere to recharge the nitrogen after a year, because they definitely wear out. Milwaukee will charge a few hundred to refurbish their nailers once they lose their oomph. The Hikoki is on their 2nd gen now, lighter than the M18. I've never used it, though.

I've found dewalt to be quite cheap when it comes to parts in their tools. I have a select few dewalts but the rest makita. I dont own this Brad nailer but I own the spiker just because its convenient but I can tell it's cheap and flimsy and also expensive. For the tool and 2 6 amp hour flexy volt batteries I was in over a grand. I wont buy the Brad nailer as my friend works in a tool crib at a manufacturing plant that uses them and although good right out of the box, they don't last long and are in the tool crib for repairs constantly

Thanks for the video of head to head comparison test. I use a Senco 18 gauge brad nailer that has a slight edge of using 2 1/8” long brads. I use it for trim punch small jobs. I also have and use Senco 15 DA and the 16 gauge nailers. But my most used for cabinetry molding installation is the Makita 12v pin nailer. I kinda wish the Senco would have been in the test run off. Again thanks.

Likely to. With the supply that Milwaukee makes, sometimes stuff starts going for ridiculously cheap. The 12v FUEL drill was going for 45 dollars a little while ago because of some combo kit deal.

No kidding. You can buy a good compressor and gun for half the price. Granted you do have to drag around the hose and it is much louder. But you can also use the compress for a lot more stuff. But if the price were to come down to around 250 it would be a game changer.

The one thing that makes the Dewalt the best is you just put the battery in and good ti go all the time until the battery dies the other's you have to turn on a switch and if you haven't used it in a couple minutes it shuts off because they're constantly using battery power while they're on not Dewalt

Metabo HPT is the best 18 gauge nail gun on the market 2nd would be Ryobi 3rd would be Dewalt. I have owned almost every 18 gauge battery nail gun on the market. The Metabo is heavy but is a beast shooting into hard woods. The Ryobi is good for fast nailing. The Dewalt is good all around but breaks very easy. I work the hell out of them 10 hours a day 5 to 6 days a week in Commercial Trim and Cabinet work.

Very helpful video and confirmed what I thought before watching. Just from comparing the Dewalt, Milwaukee and Makita in the store, I can tell the Milwaukee felt the best in hand and stood out over the rest. Unfortunately, I had to go with the Mikata because that's the system of tools and batteries I have. If I ever have to do it all over again, Milwaukee is my pick. With that said, Makita products have always served me well and I have no issue with them but I feel like Milwaukee is just making better products these days.
